They Came From Above, developed and published by Piece Of Voxel, is a lightweight tower defense game that takes a familiar formula and presents it through a simple, approachable lens. Centered on defending against waves of alien invaders descending from the sky, it combines basic tower placement with a small layer of resource management, aiming to give players flexibility in how they approach each level. While the concept is easy to grasp and the structure is immediately recognizable, the overall experience leans more toward casual experimentation than deep strategic engagement. The gameplay revolves around constructing defensive towers and managing income to sustain and expand those defenses. Players can choose how to allocate resources—whether to build strong defenses early, invest in economy for later scaling, or strike a balance between the two. This freedom in approach is one of the game’s more appealing aspects, as it allows players to test different strategies rather than follow a fixed solution. There are also limited abilities that can be used in moments of pressure, offering a way to recover when enemy waves begin to overwhelm established defenses. Early on, this creates a satisfying loop of planning and reaction, where each decision feels like it carries some weight. However, the depth of these systems is fairly limited. While the game introduces different towers and enemy waves, it doesn’t meaningfully expand on its mechanics as it progresses. Enemy behavior remains relatively straightforward, and tower functions do not vary enough to significantly alter strategies. As a result, the gameplay can begin to feel repetitive once players settle into a reliable setup. What initially feels flexible gradually becomes predictable, reducing the sense of challenge and discovery over time. The visual presentation adopts a low-poly aesthetic that gives the game a clean and readable look. Environments shift between different themes, which helps add a bit of variety, but the overall design remains quite basic. While functional for gameplay, it lacks the detail or artistic personality needed to stand out. The audio design follows a similar path, offering background music and sound effects that serve their purpose without becoming memorable. Together, these elements create a cohesive but understated presentation that supports the gameplay without elevating it. A more significant issue lies in the game’s overall polish. The lack of a clear tutorial makes it difficult for new players to fully understand its systems at the start, leading to confusion during early levels. Mechanics are not always explained in a way that feels intuitive, and occasional technical issues or inconsistencies can interrupt the flow of play. These rough edges give the impression of an unfinished or underdeveloped project, particularly when compared to more refined titles in the same genre. Content is another area where the game feels limited. While there are multiple levels and some environmental variation, the overall scope remains small. Once players have explored the available strategies and become familiar with the mechanics, there is little to extend the experience further. Replay value exists in theory, but without deeper systems or evolving challenges, it can be difficult to maintain long-term interest. Despite its shortcomings, They Came From Above does have a certain appeal for players looking for a simple, low-commitment strategy experience. It is easy to pick up, doesn’t require a significant time investment, and can provide short bursts of casual enjoyment. For those who prefer straightforward gameplay without the complexity of more demanding tower defense titles, it offers a functional, if limited, option. In the end, They Came From Above delivers a basic but serviceable take on the tower defense genre. Its flexible approach to resource management and accessible design give it some initial charm, but its lack of depth, repetitive structure, and technical roughness prevent it from standing out. It works best as a short, casual diversion rather than a fully engaging strategy experience. Rating: 6/10
öööğk really terrible terrible terrible. aaaaaaaaaaaa the game is not communicating with me at all. painful
No, just no. Don't be fooled by the price. There are no instructions and it's basically just not fun.
WORST GAME EVER. EYES BLEEDING. HELP ME.
This game ranks among the least impressive tower defense titles available. The absence of a tutorial highlights its shortcomings. They Came From Above features charming low-poly 3D graphics, where players must develop an economy and construct various defense towers to fend off waves of aliens. Players can adopt different strategies, such as prioritizing rapid defense construction over economic development, filling the map with numerous inexpensive towers, or opting for a few powerful upgraded towers. However, the game is limited to just ten levels and offers only two types of towers for defense. Additionally, earning in-game currency is both challenging and perplexing, often leaving players unable to build anything for significant periods.
