There’s something about The Witch’s Love Diary that caught my eye. The premise here is quite unique as it follows a mysterious protagonist who the reader learns about through a diary. I’m not sure if you can relate to reading a stranger’s diary, but the experience is rather thrilling. The idea of getting to know their deepest and honest thoughts through their point of view is just something that begs to be explored further. Perhaps I’m just nosy. Nevertheless, reading a diary while playing a visual novel is a new experience, and thankfully The Witch’s Love Diary has been localized so I can be as nosy as I want. Author’s note: The all-ages version is available on Steam, although there is a free patch available as well as an 18+ version on Denpasoft, which both contain mosaics like in the original version. https://youtu.be/9iPvvkbYjAU The story follows an average student named Alice Nanno who happens to live in a barbershop. She has two best friends and she spends most of her time with them. One day, her friends suggest visiting the clock tower since it’s known for granting one’s wish. Despite not having a wish, she decides to join her friends and suddenly, a mysterious book falls from inside the clock tower. Being afraid of it disappearing, she decides to keep it a secret and reads through it at night. Some pages are stuck together but when the book starts to glow, Alice is able to read through another chapter. Evidently, this mysterious book is known as the Witch’s Love Diary which is a diary of a mysterious guy named Takumi. Although its premise confused me at first, I found it enjoyable to read through the many unique independent stories that have Takumi interact with different girls. It’s also important to note that even the side characters have their own route. This way of storytelling is actually pretty unique because we have a guy as a protagonist who romances other girls, but you’re actually reading the whole game from Alice’s perspective. It feels like reading multiple different journal chapters that each contain new events. At first, the stories don’t really make sense, but as the story unfolds it starts to add up after a while. Such as why people from Alice’s circle of friends end up as characters within the journal despite them not having memories about it. It’s this mystery that kept me reading and it does pay off in the end. Even though there are multiple love stories within the journal, I found that the chemistry was really well written between Takumi and each of the girls, which surprised me given that each girl is entirely different. These love stories are quite short, yet authentic, and more importantly, realistic. I could understand why each girl fell for Takumi since, in all honesty, he is just a very sweet guy. Another thing I loved is that the story leads us into thinking that Takumi is a total jerk who just sleeps with every girl he meets, yet this view dramatically changed as I started to know more and more about him which happened naturally during the story. Each romantic story feels like being a separate event which ends with its own unique song as well as a mostly satisfying conclusion although some might consider it to be bittersweet. The Witch’s Love Diary works with a map system that lets you freely choose between any desired story. As you go through each story, new stories are unlocked, which show an avatar of the characters waiting to be chosen by the player. When you can’t decide on one, don’t worry, as they will be optional later on. While some of them are pure love stories, there are some that dive a little deeper into the character’s backstories. The game has a nice balance of fluffy romance and serious scenes, and I found them both to be equally as well written. Also, the true ending gets unlocked once you manage to finish the story once. Every day during The Witch’s Love Diary begins with Alice waking up, going to school, and then end with her reading the diary at night. Although there is a specific story you will have to play through one way or another that makes it feel more like a romantic fairytale, with Alice as the protagonist. Throughout the story, I felt like I wanted Alice to be the protagonist, but more importantly, I wanted her to appear in Takumi’s dairy. Which I’d hate to spoil. The Witch’s Love Diary has some stunning artwork, but it offers very little animations besides moving backgrounds. However, there are still plenty of different facial expressions available as well as a lot of beautiful CGs that made it hard for me get through the game because I wanted to take so many screenshots to look at later. The voice acting is high quality, even when a girl is mumbling it sounds very natural. Although the protagonist isn’t voiced, he still has his sprite, which is already quite unique for a dating sim. On a side note, I was delighted to see that The Witch’s Love Diary is another visual novel with a lot of setting options for text customization. You can choose your desired font as well as small optional extra settings depending on your preference in the menu. While playing through The Witch’s Love Diary, I felt like I was reading through a beautiful fairytale — the game’s great writing managed to change my opinion of Takumi as his character evolved through each journal entry. Even though following the journal entries at first might be a little confusing, the mysterious book and the write get explained perfectly to create a well-told story of romance in a rather unique way. The Witch’s Love Diary has multiple romance routes available that feel like independent stories that break up the main story and are, therefore, quite short. Despite being short, they managed to grip me as I felt like Takumi was a perfect fit for each girl and his connection with them came off as pure. That being said, I can highly recommend The Witch’s Love Diary to anyone who enjoys fluffy romance with a lot of cute girls fueled by stunning illustrations and characters, making it a unique kind of fairytale that only this story could tell.

I will keep waiting, until the end of fairy tale.
The concept of the diary appeared to be creative at first, but the structure of the routes is very disorganized. There's A LOT of repetitive and unnecessary scenes. Konron's route, especially, is extremely repetitive. The same scenes are shown again and again. I felt like I was in a time loop while reading her route. Some routes also feel completely useless, like the very short route with the group of three girls that is there just for the sake of losing their virginity and gaining popularity. Some of the character's personalities seem a bit inconsistent, which really shows in Hijiri's route. There are still some unanswered questions at the end and the backstories of some of the main characters could have been explained more in depth (mostly the MC). I feel like the MC's backstory was there to evoke some sort of emotion in the reader, but there was too much of "just telling" and not enough showing. Also, here's a tip: be sure to idle around on the title screen for about a minute after finishing the first true ending. There is a second true ending that is unlocked afterwards and is pretty important to the story, but it still does not fully answer everything. Overall, this is a weak story that doesn't even tie up all the loose ends, and has some very forgettable and dull characters. If I had to make a choice, I would choose Alice/Konron as favorite characters.

Full review (including score): https://youtu.be/fIAiRkj1wCM Written review below!

The rundown:
Pros: + Fantastic character designs + Interesting storytelling + Great translation + Good settings menu Cons: - Blurry art assets - Hit-and-miss story chapters - Decline in writing quality during last third One day, Alice and her friends visit a mysterious clock tower hidden away in the woods. While there, an unusual book falls from the tower and into Alice's lap. This book contains strange, yet realistic tales of people she knows and is only the beginning to a much larger mystery about forgotten first love. That is the synopsis behind Qoobrand's first visual novel: The Witch's Love Diary. It is a VN full of interesting stories to tell, but does have its fair share of issues. Note: trimmed this review to fit Steam's review character limit, check video for full version!
Pros:

Fantastic character designs. I have always been a sucker for overly frilly and detailed character designs and that's exactly what The Witch's Love Diary delivers. Everything from the elaborate clothing, to the detailed hair, and even the thin linework are all excellently done and look great as sprites and in CGs, the latter of which the game really excels at. Characters are also designed in such a way as to not appear too out of place given the setting (the use of flashy hair colors is kept to a minimum), but are still easily distinguishable between one another. They're at that crossroads between super-serious mystery and high school romance, which is exactly the combination that the game's story goes for. While there are still some problems (more on that later), the character designs and overall art do make for a rather visually-appealing experience.
Interesting storytelling. The Witch's Love Diary has a very interesting method of telling its story, one that I don't think I've seen done in the medium before. Instead of giving the player a common route and then a series of character routes that branch off of it like most other VNs, it instead offers a more linear experience that has you going through characters in a certain order under the guise of a diary's chronology. That book I mentioned at the beginning of the review? Well, it actually makes up a decent chunk of the reading experience. In it are a series of stories (or rather, diary entries) that don't appear to have any connection, and you, as the protagonist, will be reading through one of them each night as the overall story progresses. In a way, this gives the game a dual protagonist, as you have the one actually reading the diary entries and the one living within them, or rather the one that wrote them. It's a very unique way of telling a story and it provides for some pretty cool developments later on. Of course, this method of storytelling only really works if the story itself is good, which for the most part is true. The pacing is generally pretty good, the characters don't really feel that flat, and the writing itself isn't all that fluffed up like other visual novels. It does falter at some points, but even then, I got to give the game some credit for how it tells its story. It's definitely a nice change of pace in what oftentimes feels like a formulaic medium.
Great translation. I know people like to hate on Sekai Project for their slow translation speed and oftentimes messy results, but for this one they did a pretty good job! I played through the entire game and don't recall ever seeing a single typo or grammar issue. I usually screenshot these when I run into them, but I ended the game with exactly zero of these screenshots. They were either really well-hidden or simply didn't exist. And even if we're not talking strictly typos and grammar issues, the translation never came off as amateurish, nor too literal, it was in that sweet spot between the two and made the reading experience that much better.
Good settings menu. To go along with the great translation is an equally great settings menu. You have all of your basics, including text speed, window options, and autoplay settings. Then you have some settings not often seen in other VNs, including configurable keyboard shortcuts, configurable cursor hiding, and some pretty extensive font configuration. You can not only choose your font (which is a feature strangely lacking in most other VNs), but whether that text is outlined, shadowed, colored based on speaker, justified, etc. Considering that most VNs stop at a text shadow toggle, this is a massive step up. Of course, the game's settings are not perfect (it's still missing animation options, for one), but it's definitely better than what we usually get.

Cons:

Blurry art assets. The Witch's Love Diary suffers from a problem plaguing many modern visual novels: that being blurry art assets. Sure, the art itself is fantastic, but when its locked behind such a low resolution, it leads to sprites and CGs appearing blurry. The game only runs at 1280x720, so if you're using anything above that and running it in fullscreen, you'll start noticing these problems immediately. However, even when I did play the game in its native resolution, some assets still came off as blurry, especially when zoomed in on. And that's not even the only problem. The game has some really fine linework, which unfortunately does lead to some jagged edges. This is most noticeable in each character's hair, but can also be seen elsewhere. It's not as bad as some other VNs, but is definitely a problem worth noting.
Hit-and-miss story chapters. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of the game's unique storytelling is that the story chapters themselves end up being hit-and-miss in terms of how good they are. You'll have some that are really good (one of my favorites was for Ren, a character obsessed with film) and then some that just feel like they're dragging on and on (a prime example being Hijiri, a super-religious character obsessed with keeping herself free from filth). This is due to a variety of reasons, including the varying length of each story, their pacing, or even the characters within not being developed enough. The good ones do outnumber the bad, but because of the way the story works, you will have to work yourself through the bad ones whenever they crop up.
Decline in writing quality during last third. Up until the last third of the game the story remains pretty interesting. Its pacing is managed well and there are only a few hiccups during certain chapters. However, once you hit that last third of the game, the writing quality starts to steadily decline. The game picks up pacing a little too quickly, throws in a few story elements that really aren't all that necessary, and even shoehorns in a few H-scenes that feel completely out of place. It was like the writers didn't exactly know what direction to take the story, resulting in story developments that are supposed to be climatic, but end up feeling forced or far too rushed to really have the impact they were intended to have. It picks up again right before the actual ending, but unfortunately the damage was already done at that point, leaving a hole in an otherwise great story.

Overall:
For VN fans tired of the same old story formula, The Witch's Love Diary offers a nice breath of fresh air. It also has some great character designs, a good translation, and a decent settings menu. However, it is not perfect and does suffer from some hit-and-miss story chapters and a general decline in writing quality during the last third of the game. Regardless, I did enjoy my time with it and do recommend it. It's about time we have a VN try something new with its storytelling.

Qoobrand,
