Needed to take a moment to shout out this solo developer. This is a damn fine little indie gem that, sadly, seems to be completely overlooked at this point. That makes me sad, since you can really feel the love and care this dev put into his title. Fun gameplay that evolves as the game progresses, tight controls, nice presentation. Story was just enough to push the game forward but wasn't a high point IMO. The game definitely presents a challenge, but with the latest update, the dev added some QOL options to reduce the overall difficulty. They helped me immensely (completed the game using them) and are further proof this dev cares about his title and wants people to enjoy it. All the more reason for people to give it some attention - any attention FFS. My one complaint would be the hub where you select the levels. There are points where you have to complete a series of jumps from platform to platform to get to the entrance to the next level. You can fall during these parts - and it sends you back to a predetermined spot... which is generally too far back This was, strangely, one of the most annoying parts of the game. It's the level select hub - no challenge should be presented here. I just wanna select the next level FFS. Cheap AF at normal price, an absolute steal on sale.
Super fun twist on the platformer genre, the art work was cool, and the story I experienced so far was super interesting. I didn't get to far though as the 'difficult' tag it's been given is well warranted - I even struggled with the tutorial! Despite that I still had fun and anyone who likes games to just be a bit on the brutal side will love it. Personally I would like the ability to tone down the difficulty.
I guess the first thing to say about "The Wind's Path" is that this is not an asset flip, it is not unethically made, it's a genuine and sincerely made amateur game on Steam. I think that, while genuine intentions alone are not enough to make a successful game, I'm surprised this wasn't more popular... the player count indicates this was a complete failure, and unfortunately the only reviews on the game are from generic AI slop review bots (note: those fake reviews aren't review manipulation on the part of the developer, there's some bot accounts that write AI slop reviews on everything). Taking that into account, let's dig into this game, find out what it is and why it failed. This is a very unique game... I've played more games than anyone else in the world, and I never really found anything quite like this (part of the reason I am surprised it's not more successful, from the novelty alone). Of course, just because an idea is a new one doesn't mean it's a good one. This is a top down platformer (yes, really) with a frankly annoying collection of gimmicks... and I think beyond just the very poor quality of Godot's 2D engine (which still, to date, has never been used to create a successful game) (3D engine is okay but nobody uses it), it's just a clunky and un-fun game to play, once you get your head around the gimmicks. What you do in the game is basic top down platforming, but there's an array of things you need to keep your eyes on at the same time as trying to play the game. "Wind" is the theme... there's wind direction, dashing, grappling onto walls, attacks, and mechanisms that need you to move around as much as possible to build your "Flow"... platformers are supposed to be easy to learn and difficult to master. This is difficult to learn and undesirable to master. There's some plot around a woman being able to control the wind or something... it's badly told and annoying to skip through. There's an overwhelming amount of mediocre Visual Novel/E-book style cutscenes in this game. The developers failed one of the most basic, fundamental requirements of game design.. "Show, don't tell." So you'll spend a huge amount of time not playing the game, but clicking through endless lines of poorly written VN text cutscenes because the developers couldn't work out how to relate their narrative through the game mechanics, and decided instead it would be better to compete with reading a book for your time. It felt like an eternity before I could get into the game, and you can't skip all of the sequences. We're here to play games, not read through hours of garbage intersituals. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. Show, don't tell. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. This looks a lot like it was designed for consoles, but released on Steam instead by mistake. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this never made it to the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. The artwork here is terrible, it's all just amateurish "My First Wacom Tablet" style drawings used instead professional looking game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low, enough on its own to deter gamers. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. These technical shortcomings push this game below minimum standards for any competently developed modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game all-time peak player count was only ONE player. That's right, only one person ever played this at a time. When I played this for the purposes of reviewing it, I equalled the peak player count for the game. OUCH. The only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 130 million gamers on Steam and well over 140,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Itch has one job, and it's not a hard job, but they failed again... to keep amateur stuff in their weird hugbox where everyone claps and says "Good job!!!" at every bit of amateur drivel (which nobody actually plays) and away from gamers. Unfortunately this has leaked out onto Steam platforms and now gamers have to put up with yet another bit of poorly made amateur shovelware. Let's talk about pricing and the actual value this has for gamers. Is this game one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? The Wind's Path has the cash grab price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Dragon Age: Origins", "Just Cause 2" or "Fallout: New Vegas". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. When pricing the game, the developer failed at the "look around" test... the competition is severe. There's enough defects and quality problems with this game that it's really impossible to recommend to gamers.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
