The Vagrant is a solid 6.5 — a "six-seven," as people like to say nowadays. The game looks beautiful and borrows heavily from Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown. The visuals, character designs, and overall presentation constantly evoke those titles, which is certainly not a bad thing. The gameplay follows a similar formula as well, blending side-scrolling action with RPG progression and light Metroidvania elements. The soundtrack is another highlight. You'll find everything from symphonic tracks and heavy metal to atmospheric pieces, and most of it does a great job of supporting the adventure. Where the game starts to stumble is its sense of progression. Personally, I never really felt stronger as I advanced. Regular enemies are incredibly tanky, and bosses have absolutely massive health pools. The frustrating part is that it often doesn't seem to matter how much you've upgraded your gear or invested in the skill tree—your damage output still feels underwhelming. Thankfully, some skills, especially the screen-covering rush attack, deal respectable damage and help make combat feel more rewarding. The story doesn't do much to elevate the experience either. It's serviceable, but ultimately very basic and forgettable, lacking the depth needed to leave a lasting impression. There's also a noticeable amount of enemy repetition that becomes more apparent the longer you play. That said, the game remains enjoyable overall. If you're a fan of side-scrolling action games with Metroidvania elements and a higher-than-average difficulty level, there's definitely fun to be had here. It even offers additional difficulty modes for players looking for an even greater challenge. Personally, I found Normal mode challenging enough. I just finished the game and felt no interest in replaying it to get the true ending, though. Despite its balancing issues, repetitive enemies, and forgettable story, The Vagrant is still a worthwhile experience thanks to its gorgeous art direction, strong soundtrack, and satisfying combat mechanics.
good
Me encanta The Vagrant, le agarré mucho cariño.
It's clear that O.T.K Games are fans of VanillaWare, the games they make and the art style they've perfected over the years. The Vagrant is a good stab trying to wedge itself into the space that Odin's Sphere, Muramasa and Dragon's Crown occupies. This is a game I've had my eyes on ever since I was tasked with evolving a team of 2D gamedevs at work to start making more edgier games. The hand-painted and novice nature of The Vagrant made it a pretty good case study I thought. After an hour in the game now it's pretty safe to say that if the team will make more 2D games in the future this will be a good game to draw some inspiration from. Gameplay is what one expect. Narrative scenes mixed with some side-scrolling exploration, enclosed spaces for fighting enemies and boss battles. There is also depth to the upgrade system for those players that are really into that. Controls are pretty responsive and feels good. Visually is where the game really shines. While it's a far cry from the quality of a VanillaWare game it's still many levels above the average 2D anime-styled side scrolling action game on Steam. The art is all hand-made which adds charm and meaning to the visuals. It makes it a game worth your time, money and admiration. The anime-styled characters are all consistent and well rendered. The feamle characters are often designed with the male gaze in mind and Vivian, the heroine, is no different. Her bosom is almost exploding out of her bra. This type of fanservice is a touchy topic in the west, but the contribution of it have most likely contributed a great deal to the +384K units sold of the game. Games need to sell to keep the studios afloat afterall. The other characters are more stylized and goes into a more cartoony and outlandish design, but they are all tied together due to the rendering and lighting style. The environments and props are all well-made illustrations. Its pleasing for the eyes. Some of the far backgrounds are a bit too simplistic looking. Vibes-wise it hit all the right notes for a 2D side-scrolling action game. As a fan of the 'Tebineri' or hand-shaping paper-doll 2D art style and animation that VanillaWare have perfected I think O.T.K Games has made a good first stab at it. Having worked on games for a long time myself I'm familair with the effort it takes to make good looking and well animated 2D games. Hence, O.T.K Games have earned my respect and attention. This is a game I think my team could learn a thing or two from if we make another 2D game going forward. As a gamer I will come back to play and chip away at from time to time.
