The main character's voice acting is excellent! The rest of the game's sound design leaves a lot to be desired. None of the characters sound like they are in the same room. The environments are extremely barren and look like they are missing texture. The early access period is 3 weeks!? There is no way this is going to justify its $20+ asking price in that amount of time. If this were $5, I might say, "Yes! This is really cool." However, in its current, unpolished state, I can't recommend it. https://youtu.be/qpYU2dmytZM

A good indie game in the cyberpunk genre. I especially liked the technical part, that is the game looks great and works great for its level, the control is convenient. The team did a great job, it's nice to see that there are Russian developers in the industry, and they contribute to its development. The plot idea is entertaining. The game is divided into several series which makes it possible for the developers to make it better, and for us, players, in our turn, to whet the appetite for the project. I will follow its development. It has not been without faults, of course. The main one is some lack of the scale, however, I believe that this is only the first stage, and in future the developers will improve their product and bring it to AAA level.
As for me, this game doesn`t cost 20$, but if it be about 10, you can receive pleasure playing this. I immersed in an exciting atmospheric storyline and despite all limitations, I liked it, and recommend to try, at least for support new developers
This was such a disappointment. There was a lack of direction, enemies only responded to what was in their line of sight, so shooting an enemy on the other side of the truck didn't bring them running, so you could have assumed the coast was clear until you start to move off and get shot from behind. There is no cohesion to the gameplay, in the first "mission" you get to a checkpoint in the middle of a cross roads and all of a sudden loading screen and you're in a room somewhere. Where? We don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ know, we're there just to hear a news report on the suicide and then we're off back out to see a doctor. Why? Cause the game said so and explains it on the way. We also get a voice over explaining how close we are to the doctor but doesn't explain why, no story only told how we're supposed to feel about him. The writing is terrible. Legitimately awful, dialogue is cheesy and contradictory in many places and the game is filled with so many cliche's it doesn't know what to do with them all so pretty much wraps them up within a line or two of each other. To start the world feels empty as there are so many pristine and well kept buildings but no-one around, as the game progresses we see random people walking around but they don't interact with you or respond to your presence so even with other npcs around it's still a dead city. I hit a wall with this game and I'm really regretting ever applying for a review key. And £15!!!!! Are you kidding me???
To put it simply, I'd describe The Unclearness as a narrative-driven adventure game that seems to contain bits and pieces of two other discernible genres, namely walking sim and third-person shooter. Personally, the game seems to have a bit of a Max Payne vibe (specifically Max Payne 1 and 2). In this game, you play as a private detective called Sten (this is not a typo - his name is spelled this way in the game), and he's investigating a series of apparent-suicides around his city that's set in a cyberpunk-like world; suicides committed by people who obviously don't have a reason to want to die at all. In fact,
one of the victims was a police lieutenant who very frankly cried out "I don't want to die" right before hurling himself off the top of a very tall building.
This, in of its own, presents a very interesting storyline that I would love to be able to pursue further.
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vog8LLfGpYo Unfortunately, before you can get to that more intriguing part, you'll have to slog through the beginning. The game starts off with a monologue that doesn't really makes much sense - and frankly speaking, I kinda lost interest for a bit - until I was finally given full control of my character. However, my renewed interest was very rapidly cut short when I realized that the game expected me to run up two long flights of stairs, watch a short cutscene, pick up some stuff, and basically, run all the down again... times 3 because I was killed three times in a gun fight with the police by trying to be somewhat stealthy. The gun fights in this game aren't really designed in a satisfying way. What do I mean by that? Well, the game gives you two options - you can go in guns blazing with your assault rifle or you can try the stealthier route and use your silenced handgun instead. However, I've quickly learned that the stealth option only works in very rare situations, namely when the police officer is standing alone or veerrrrryyy far from another officer, and in those rare cases, I would usually creep up behind them and just melee them into unconsciousness rather than use my handgun. Most of the time, you'll want to just shoot at them using your assault rifle and use the corners of buildings or objects as cover - you'll die way less often that way. Funnily enough, even after using my assault rifle to noisily kill his colleagues, I still find a lone police officer standing right in the middle of the "carnage", just twiddling his thumbs and probably doing his hardest NOT to look at me. By the way, why are police officers shooting at Sten without any provocation anyway? It's not like I'm playing a fugitive in GTA - Sten's a private detective, forgawdsake! From its poor gunplay, buggy AI, and a pretty boring start, I could quickly see that The Unclearness is by no means a well-made indie game, but it does have a couple of redeeming factors in the face of a mountain of negative ones. To make it easier to read, here's the TL;DR version:
Pros
+ Surprisingly good vehicle controls. It may not let you do donuts on the streets, but it's smooth, responsive, and most importantly, functional. + Has a bit of a "Max Payne" vibe, specifically the older Max Payne games + Love the setting - I always have a soft spot for cyberpunk/dystopian settings.
Meh
* Has a pretty intriguing storyline for you to uncover but the pacing is very slow at the beginning. I'm also not sure if the ending is any good since I've not reached there yet. * The graphics seem alright. Not exactly something I'd expect from a 2019-released game but the visuals are still good enough. * Generally "okay" voice acting. The quality seems a bit inconsistent though - the main character and the surgeon sounded okay but boy... that lady client of Sten's sounds terrible. When Sten had a monologue where he mentioned about how heavenly she sounded, I snorted... hard. * Not sure why the lockpicking "mini-game" is needed because for some reason, I always managed to lockpick a door successfully by just randomly turning the lockpicks around. * The night vision is actually pretty useful to have since the game can be very dark at times. However, the night vision effect itself looks very unpolished. * The stealth option only works in certain situations
Cons/Feedback
- The Unclearness is a game that sorely needed beta testing prior to its release. From the very long loading screens that made you think the game/your computer froze to the loud whirring sound of my laptop's fan going into overdrive, I'm pretty sure the game isn't very well-optimized. - The game has lots of bugs and typos too. Getting the main character's name wrong is one thing, but making it so that you can only open some of the doors in the morgue if your character is facing AWAY from the door is another. - For some reason, you seem to move a lot faster by crouching rather than by walking. - Poor writing (or was it translation?) - These are direct quotes from one of the missions you get in the game (@ 57:26), "Get a vial of lieutenant for analysis" and "Use the electronic key of the lieutenant who gave the homeless"... yup - $8.99 seems like a rather high price point for a game like The Unclearness at the moment. - The start of the game could use some reworking as well. It's slow, confusing, and rather boring. The running up and down the stairs thing need to be cut a bit shorter. - It doesn't seem like the game has bullet drop - As in you can still shoot and kill an enemy even if he's very very far away. - I stopped my stream at the point where I have no idea how I can grab the electronic key(card) from my mission log book and use it on the door I was supposed to open. The game has no hotbar for me to "equip" the keycard, and dragging and dropping the key from the log book to the door (like in point-and-click adventure games) don't work. I'll probably add more if I can manage to figure out how to use my keycard to open the door.
Overall
The Unclearness isn't exactly what I'd called a ready-for-release game. It seems rather "early access" and could actually use a lot more feedback from players, other than myself of course, to improve further. Personally, I think the game might have been a bit better if it just does away with the gunplay (and lockpicking) entirely and focuses more on the storyline, the dialogues, and the atmosphere. It should also have given players a bit more background/story about the world Sten/Stan is living in before putting them through the monologue at the very beginning. Getting an editor to go through all the text in the game would be a great idea as well. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend buying the game now, as it is, mainly because it's more of a miss than a hit for now, but if you're really interested, maybe you could wishlist the game and check in to see what's changed in a couple of months.
