Not a bad effort for a small horror game, good use of texture, subtle but effective jump scares, and a relatively decent story for a short length, roughly 60 minutes, assuming the game won't crash (which it did, twice for me). I thought it had a good mystery, never really forcing the narrative on you, but make sure to stay for a post-credit scene, I think it's relevant for the overall experience. There is only one section in the game where you have to hide in lockers, it wasn't too difficult but it was slightly annoying because I could not tell how far away the monster was, he pretty much kept getting me around the corner, maybe if you gave him some distance based noise it would help (if he has one I didn't hear much) For the most part the game is just a walking sim that focuses on the atmosphere, with a few easy puzzles toward the end. I liked that you utilized some interesting locations despite going into the tunnels, it has a bit of a psychological angle as you find the places that really should not be there. Some nice little moments here and there, I liked the surreal feeling of jumping into that deep hole, or finding a portal to some kind of cerebral realm, could always use a little more, play around with weird level design and strange events.
Pros:
(+) For a cheap game, I thought you handled the visuals and the vibes perfectly, the game had a good mystery and suspense to it. (+) I didn't find many cheap jump scares if any, very subtle horror elements, not too intense but still a little creepy. (+) Good use of psychological level design to give the game a surreal feel and some variety
Feedback:
- I would give the monster a better sound Q so he can't catch you on the corners with little warning - I had 2 crashes, one at the door after the hole, and 1 after the lock - Those surreal effects like that deep hole, you should use those a bit more often, give the game a sense of strange navigation into psychological aspects Overall Thoughts: 7/10 I think you have a good idea on how to make a good horror game, I would not try to change the overall approach, just maybe make the next one a little bigger, go a bit more crazy on the level design and location variety. I liked that little post credit scene, makes me wonder.
Niche, obscure and underrated games: http://store.steampowered.com/curator/31294838-Hidden-Gem-Discovery/
This is a good game right here. The atmosphere is on point. I quite like the graphic style. Just reminds me of the good ole times. I didn't get too frustrated with it either. I managed to complete the game in about an hour ish. Had a solid time with it. Gameplay Impressions: https://youtu.be/gINCj4XV868
A decent little horror experience. Descending through 8 areas with only a lantern keeps things tense and the story is pretty good too.
This game was absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere is impressive visually but the sound design really ties it all together, I originally played this game back when it first released, but the new update literally added double the playtime with a seriously cool ending. I managed to get the true ending by solving a secret puzzle, but that's all I'll say. This really sets the standards for what a solo dev can achieve and stand out in a sea full of janky horror asset flips.
The Tunnels of Saint Mercy Road
Tunnels of Saint Mercy Road is an ode to classic Playstation and Playstation 2 era horror games with strong environments, creature horror, and a story that encourages you to explore to find that little something extra to make the pieces fit. Definitely looking forward to more from Melancholy Jester Games! *As a note I did receive a copy of the game for free on Steam through testing purpose, BUT I paid for a personal copy when the game originally released on Itch which was before it was available on steam :)
I really enjoyed this game. Nice PSX style graphics, great storytelling and variety of levels. There is the occasional nod to other great survival horror games, which is a nice touch. There was a good sense of tension throughout the game, mainly due to the excellent sound design. I also liked the look of the demon. He is suitably sinister. The puzzles were good and presented a nice level of challenge and the final boss battle was a good finisher. It's clear to see from the amount of updates the game is getting that a lot of heart and work has been put into and is still being put into this title. I look forward to future games from this developer as he clearly has a great deal of passion for what he is doing and video games in general.
My love for good horror games knows no bounds.
Great
I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS GAME. I was instantly enamored with the art style - low poly/ pixellated is one of my favorites - and the premise is fascinating. I was definitely disappointed when it ended - not because it wasn't a good ending, but because I wanted more. Definitely recommend for those who like a more heart-pumping game with good exploration and story!
