As always, I will start this review by saying THIS IS IN EARLY ACCESS! This game is not complete yet! I was very skeptical when I heard it was a "Card based action game" especially in vr, and was very curious how this would work. But after over an hour of duels, dungeons and messing about, I love this mechanic and design. The combat mechanics are great, you twist your hand, which rotates your controller and selects the card (or ability) you wish to use, you press the trigger, charge it up, and boom! You've thrown a fireball in an orcs face. It's simple, yet when you are being attacked wave after wave, or trying to dodge another fireball, or ice blast from another mage, it gets a little hectic, which I love! Currently there is 3 parts to this game: The First is the Tavern. The Tavern is kind of like the hub to this game. It is where you can duel other players, chill in the games environment, eventually be able to do many more things in this space, like Crafting and such. You can adjust your deck (Almost like sorting your hotbar out in a typical MMO game) where you sort your spell cards, summons and such, to what works easiest for you, which, you can then test out by dueling other people in this hub. After the Tavern, you have Dungeons. So dungeons is a zone where you will fight off many rooms and spaces of orcs, which will be where you find crafting materials once they are added to the game. This is also one of the ways you will be able to level up, through gaining experience doing dungeons. And Third, is Orc Attack. I enjoy Orc Attack. It is a wave after wave survive on your own, against orcs. This is another great place to try out your decks, and to challenge others to see who can survive the longest. There is so much more planned for this game, as explained by the devs in the early access section on the page on steam. And I know for one I will be looking forward to playing the updates, and seeing this great VR project get better and better. Yes the game has some cons to it, some issues I find is the odd frame drops here, odd glitch or bug there. But the Devs are always listening, really active on their discord, and will listen to reports and try help fix it, or look into the issue. All in all, I would highly recommend this game. Lot's of fun, especially with a group.

The Tavern of Magic is a new VR magic duelling game. It can be played in co-op, PVP, and there is currently a small single player dungeon that I play in the video. It's primary focus seems to be the PVP. The atmosphere and graphics are fantastic. It's quite a good VR experience and I enjoyed my time clearing the dungeon. It is currently in Early Access on Steam and is actively being worked on so it will be great to see it grow and evolve. Currently the games store page promises... "When this Game will leave Early Access you will be able to: *Collect, buy or sell Magic Cards, form your perfect deck and conquer other mages in Duels. *Crawl together thru Dungeons, defeat various enemies, seize their souls into your Card deck and use them in Battles. *PvP Duels, 2v2, the Tavern Brawl *PvE Dungeons (4 co-op or 4v4 "Mirrored Dungeon")" and it seems to be coming along quite nicely so you might want to take notice of this title. My video should give you a decent look at the type of game play to expect so take a look because it's quite good... https://youtu.be/0AtzJpoH7nk Thanks for watching, please like, subscribe and comment.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
First things first, I got this game on the Steam Curator program free but I will review this game as though I had paid full price. Secondly, I see the game is in EA and it seems the dev is working on the game. I played this game after the most recent update on September 14, 2018. I liked certain things about this game, the card aspect was interesting for a dungeon crawler / duel game. However, I simply cannot recommend the game at this time. It was a tough call for me, but the game is too bare bones. Obviously, I couldn't get a duel going because nobody was playing the game. Even if there was a playerbase, though, there's much better magic dueling games in VR already out there. We have Wands and we have The Unspoken on Oculus, which are both more polished magic dueling games. I'm basing this on the practice mode the game has, which is basically just unleasing your spells on a target dummy. And as far as dungeon crawling, there are a ton of better games than this as well, at this price point too. I think it's awesome we have lots of spell to choose from. Getting health and mana back is easy. You even have free locomotion (although no option to smooth turn). You can not teleport outside of battle which makes it not a helpful option. All those spells cards in your hand and not a teleport option spell. You can use a card to get a sword on your left hand. So you should probably do that before heading into any dungeon room. You can also activate a shield anytime as it is not a card spell and there is no timer on it, but it does drain mana. You have a variety of offensive spells but I wasn't sure if there was any real strategy in using one versus another (but the potential is there). The longer you hold the spell, the more powerful it becomes up to a certain point. The problem is that I believe there are currently only 2 types of enemy and 1 boss. The enemies are goblins that are magic based or a a warrior. The warriors just run up to you and try to melee you. The wizards seems to just stand back and launch various spells at you. You flick your wrists and change the spell highlighted in your arm and start activating your spells. There was variety in the spells, but it didn't seem to matter what I used really as the sword was the most effective way to dispatch enemies. Even without using the sword though, there was no strategy in picking a certain spell over the other honestly. At $20, even in EA, I expect more from a game. Granted, the dev does have plans and so this game might be of value in the future. But as it stands right now, there's just not enough there to recommend. Only give your money to the dev if you feel confident they will deliver ... based on what's there currently, I have my doubts. The game should have the following before it can be recommended: Procedural dungeons with real variety, having to use your spells and what cards you bring to the battle being a strategic decision, enemy variety and loot. Rate 4.5/10. Best case scenario, The DevGamm judge had never played a prior VR title.
+Interesting concept +Interesting gameplay -Multiplayer game with no one playing 2/5 Currently no one plays this multiplayer game, making it not fun. You can play against bots, but that's not fun at all since they're extremely predictable. Update: it's abandoned, so their response to my Thumbs down is changing to a even more thumbs down. Tavern of Magic ist sozusagen familientauglich. Keine Empfehlung. Tavern of Magic is an Early Access Free to play VR game that needs more work. It worked on my HTC Vive system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Not sure if the current game is the whole thing. Sign in game says it is in Early Beta. Didn't see how to modify card deck. Very hard to use all the cards in a fight. Game released in 2018, so maybe this game is abandoned and unfinished, full of empty promises. Has 19 steam achievements, not sure if you can do all with the current game. This is a Multiplayer game, but nobody is playing. You can play against bots. There is no instructions or tutorial. Try this game maybe, but not worth downloading.
Here is some of my team's feedback: Strengths: - Very unique and fun gameplay! - Magic is really well animated, powerful, versatile, and cool - Casting is super easy and yet skill-based - Feels like a good use of VR with movement plus immersion - Multiplayer works quite well for such an early game stage Growth Areas: - Definitely need more information on different spells, or at least a tooltip on what everything does/mean - Voice chat would be great! - Finding a server/game needs to be more intuitive - Dungeon is really fun!! But need more versatility in enemies, maps, and leveling. Enemies would always rush you all at once, and players could just hide behind the door at each level. - Splash damage radius is unclear (and can go through walls?) - Sword seemed OP, or spells too weak in terms of damage output - PvP can go on for wayyy too long with both opponents more likely running out of mana long before health - There is no way to leave a game mode and go back to the room or to another game mode! I am very much looking forward to your next updates!! I think this game has a LOT of potential and is super fun and unique. Let me know when you all feel you're ready to release this game for licensing, we'll be happy to reassess and negotiate at that time. Until then, we'll help test your game whenever you need it, as long as we have the time! Закрыть
"The Tavern of Magic" is an abandoned Early Access attempt to make a mobile app scam card game where the objective is to buy cards in the cancerous mobile app-like cash shop the developer infested this P2W trash with. But it seems they didn't have the talent to actually make a complete game. What do you do in the game? Nothing, there's no players because it's an abandoned cash grab. The developers abandoned this 6 years ago. It will never be completed. This unfinished game is just polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuinely, completely made games. The graphics aren't great, and look like they're just stolen off various asset stores (is anyone surprised that yet another shady dev wanted YOUR money for someone else's game assets?). That's understandably be turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to understand the most basic axiom of VR game design... if the only cool thing about your product is VR support, your product is not cool. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. This is only superficially free. The real purpose for this game is for the developer to farm and exploit Steam Inventory items that drop through the game. They can then sell these items in bulk on the Steam Community Marketplace. This kind of Steam abuse, combined with a minimum-viable-product non-game, does no service to gamers whatsoever. Combine that with the toxic cash shop monetisation and it's pretty obvious what happened here. This is pollution... it's harmful to everyone. It hurts genuine indie devs, who have to compete with this pollution to get visibility for their sincerely made games. It makes indie devs look bad. It makes it harder for gamers to find those genuinely made games. Even though this was "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
Before I played The Tavern of Magic, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
