The Shadow Over Cyberspace feels like opening a time capsule you’re not entirely sure you should touch. For anyone who lived through the early Web — the static‑crackled optimism of the mid‑to‑late nineties, the sense that the Internet was a frontier rather than a marketplace — the experience hits with an uncanny familiarity. Its reflections on how that world curdled into the toxic sprawl we know today linger long after the screen goes dark. The themes aren’t just thoughtful. They feel like echoes from a past that never fully resolved. The Shadow Over Cyberspace isn’t a game that welcomes everyone in. Its story is anchored firmly in the late‑1990s fever dream, when the world collectively held its breath waiting for the millennium to break every computer on Earth. Players born after 2000 may find that hysteria alien and even absurd. The game leans into that darkness — the paranoia, the static, the sense of a world humming with invisible tension. The interface is intentionally archaic: DOS prompts, clunky windows and a 1999‑era “AI” that feels more like a ghost than a helper. It’s slow, stubborn and unapologetically inconvenient and that’s the point. For present-day players, it may feel like wrestling with a machine that resents being touched. Its brush with the Cthulhu mythos will also divide audiences. Purists may balk at how loosely the game treats Lovecraft’s cosmology, but within this world — a world of flickering CRTs, corrupted files and late‑night dread — the cosmic‑horror elements feel less like homage and more like interference from another signal bleeding through. What ultimately carries the experience is the writing. It captures the inner life of a solitary hacker: his quiet life, the isolation, the endless drone of the public and the online noise and the way media and virtual spaces shaped sensation in 1999. When the clock finally rolled over to January 1st, 2000 and the world stubbornly refused to end, the game leaves you with a lingering question — was the apocalypse simply delayed, or was it always just an illusion we cast ourselves in the glow of our monitors?

One of the finest free visual novels ever made.
The Shadow Over Cyberspace is a visual novel in an alternative history "modempunk horror" setting. The protagonist is an amateur hacker afflicted by the Yellow Sign, slowly destroying their body and mind. The way to salvation lies through the Artificial Minds, virtual entities of immense power. Most of the gameplay consists of visual novel-style dialogues, with several dialogue options, opening different paths and providing information. Depending on what has been discovered and in what order the AMs are approached, the dialogues change. There are several endings and the main cast are quite likeable and relatable, aside from the main antagonist. The writing is clear, understandable, and consistent, with each NPC having their own distinct speech style. While a lot of the vocabulary used did not exist in the US in the 90's, this is covered by the alternative history setting and this is what localisation does - finds the closest actively used terminology to convey the meaning. My only complaint would be that the extent of animal abuse in "research", including the space one, was significantly understated. The full list of content warnings is available on the developers' website. Another gameplay system is closer to point&click adventure games, though it is quite light. Finally, there is the Minesweeper mini-game to represent hacking (the mines' positions persist between reloads). The visual style feels closer to the 00's, though fits the game well. The sound design is well done. Most of the dialogues take place in text format in-universe, so they are not voiced, but the ones that are supposed to be spoken are. There is built-in self-voicing function. The installation size is very reasonable (<600MB). As the game uses the Ren'Py engine, it is possible to save at any point in multiple save slots (~60). Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience and I have purchased the donation DLC to support the developers. The game itself is fully available for free.
This is a very unique take on Lovecraftian lore and we (I played with a friend) loved it. I think this is the 1st visual novel that managed to capture my attention and not only that, but make me love it: A. World building and story 1. The writing is stellar and includes many references and real-life connections that are cleverly incorporated to hash out this alternate 1999. All the characters are complex and their personalities are built step by step in a very natural manner, it really feels like you get to know them in an organic way. 2. Both visual and sound design complement the writing and maintain a consistent style that further builds the world and we absolutely LOVED it and really stands out from other visual novels. p.s the UI was also very nice (like a fax machine). B. Game design 1. I love that we have literally zero loading time and unlimited saves(as far as we could tell, we reached 21 pages, although the index under shows a maximum of 9 pages), it made it really convenient to get 100% on achivements and explore dialogue variations (I will mention that the game did have 2 mini crashes, but the frequent saves ensured nothing was lost). 2. And that leads us to the 2nd briliiant thing in this category. Every choice and new piece of information discovered was reflected in the dialogue (and there are a lot of choices to be made and things to discover) or at least, it was cleverly enough written that it seemed so. Hence, we read everything word by word, we were rly engaged. 3. Another bundle of mechanics that helped with engagement were: the mind sweeper mini-game (u can skip it if u rly want ), the "web pages" that we accesed to gather intel, the "online chats" we had with certain characters, the fully voiced answering machine, the occasional alterations to the background (part of some events ), the TV with clips from actual old broadcasts (we think). I tried to show through this review just how much this game is worth it without spoiling it <3
FOUND IT! Call of Cthulu videogame, too bad it's not as deep as Terraria but THIS IS BETTER BECAUSE OF NO FISHING!
May chaos rule the world!
nah
very fun to see the different points of view of the old ones and how they shape the endings, also azathoth my beloved <3333 my memelord failgirl
