The path you take is chosen from a random selection on a map, a bit like in a roguelite. Along the way there are a few intersections where you can pick between two routes, but otherwise the journey is fairly straightforward. Most of the nodes you’ll encounter lead to battles against normal or elite enemies, followed by shops and random events. Once a battle begins, you draw several random cards from your deck. These cards represent different classes of soldiers such as paladins, longbowmen, knights, and others. However, the cards act more like skins that you place on basic, unarmed units. Those basic units are the only ones you can summon at first, and each summon costs one gem. When you place a card, or skin, onto a unit, you spend additional gems depending on the class and its stats. The empty slot in your hand is immediately filled with a new card if there are still cards left in your deck. Even so, you cannot spend gems recklessly. Gems carry over throughout the run, so using them all in the first battle can easily cause problems later. When you’re satisfied with your squad, you start the fight and watch as your units and the enemy clash until the timer runs out. Victory depends on the number of kills. Every defeated unit, whether yours or the enemy’s, respawns after a second or two and returns to the fight. When the timer reaches zero, the side with the most kills wins. If you win, you get to choose one or two new cards from a random selection and add them to your deck for future battles. Occasionally a unit card is replaced with a relic card, which grants a special perk such as increased damage or speed to whichever character you equip it on. A victory also rewards you with a bundle of gems, money, and upgrade rocks. Even if you lose, the run isn’t over yet. You have three lives, so there is still a chance to recover. You will also receive a few extra gems and still get to pick new cards just as if you had won. However, once all your lives are gone, the run ends and your entire progress is erased. Although success depends heavily on strategy and the units you choose, it’s often a good idea to reach a shop early in the run. In shops you can sell cards you don’t need, which is a great way to keep your deck focused on the units you actually want to draw. You can also buy new cards or upgrade the ones you already have. Upgrades require rocks, which you earn after each victory. When you upgrade a unit, it receives three random boosts. A single unit can be upgraded up to five times. If you are not happy with the three boosts you get, you can reroll them once. Each upgrade costs more rocks than the previous one, but a heavily upgraded unit supported by a few basic troops can easily cut through standard enemies and sometimes even elite encounters. Another nice detail is that if you obtain the same unit type again, you do not have to upgrade it from scratch if you have already upgraded that unit before. If you manage to build a squad with several fully upgraded units, you will be strong enough to challenge the bosses. Every map ends with a boss fight, and this is the perfect moment to spend every gem you have left because your gems reset when you move to the next map. The new map introduces new enemies and another boss, and the cycle continues until you either lose all your lives or defeat every map. There is no traditional meta progression system, but you can still unlock new features by completing achievements. Each achievement grants a point that can be spent on permanent options such as buying extra lives in shops, upgrading relics instead of just units, or unlocking additional bonuses when upgrading units. Quite a few achievements are rewarded for random events, such as a trader that may or may not give you something in exchange for one of your units, or a game where you pick a reward under a cup. However, since runs are more or less the same, your time with the game depends on how many runs it will take until you get a good squad.
