"The Scent of Summer" is a low key asset flip, a bunch of other people's assets assembled badly to make a basic game. Typically this kind of thing is done by amateur developers without sufficient budget, talent and/or staff to do the job of game development professionally. It's then quickly rushed into Steam Direct. And, unsurprisingly, this never results in a product with any quality, interest, or value for gamers. This is a creepy "experience" game where the developer projects his creepy fantasy of having an imaginary girlfriend who's a high schooler. I have to say it's got to be difficult having an imaginary underage girlfriend when you're not allowed within 200m of a school. As a game, though, apart from being a creepy, cringey mess, it isn't really. At best you could pretend it's a walking sim, more likely this is something that got the developer on a watchlist. So the visuals might look almost tolerable at first glance, if mismatched looking in places. But that's only because the "developer" is using other people's assets. When a dev is too lazy or untalented to make their own art, they usually aren't capable of competent coding or game design either. That is exactly the case with this mess. It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to understand the most basic axiom of VR game design... if the only cool thing about your product is VR support, your product is not cool. This game is fairly dated at 8 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Even as a free game, this couldn't find an audience. With a peak of [b]only 9 players[/b] (possibly law enforcement officials collecting evidence), it's clear the Steam community took one look and walked away. They literally couldn't pay people to spend time playing this. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "nope". While it won't necessarily cost you money, the time and hard drive space it requires could be better invested in one of the many higher quality alternatives on Steam. Nobody needs this level of creepy cringe.

It's free so I'm not going to complain. The voice acting was ok & the scenes looked nice. However it made me feel like Milhouse watching Poochie. "When are they going to get to the fireworks factory?...(cries)."

The Scent of Summer is a VR Virtual Novel. It worked on my HTC Vive, Meta Quest 3 via Steam Link, system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has all English voiceovers. It is a cute short story taken from Japan. The only problem is you have to step away from NPCs walking into your position. Try it if you like virtual novels and delete it.
