ig if you like chess puzzles then its fine, but i don't like it much. on easy difficulty its a bad game, on hard difficulty i just run out of time/moves. I came here from Drawback Chess, and i think Drawback Chess is a much better game that feels more like a chess game rather than this which feels like a chess puzzle, which i don't like... i just want to enjoy playing and not worrying about "you have 5 moves left to capture his king". Just not my thing... not worth all the money haha. but i love drawback chess.
I played my very first run, and got Dues Est Machina. At the end of my turn, I spend 10 energy to get 4 queens. I also got a power up that gives me 4 energy each time a queen captures, and also 3 more energy each time I lose a non-pawn. It was an infinite and exponential loop for 20+ queens each round. The final boss, Draco didn't even stand a chance. That is the sign of a great rogue-like!
7/10 sometimes your crushing it and other times your getting crushed into a fine powder, snorted, shat out, used as fertilizer to grow a lemon tree that one day falls over and levels your family home. no middle ground. all based on what you get you can win in 2 turns with them having no chance or vice versa - you should be able to sell items you dont use - only 3 items can be purchased each round. gets worse the more stuff you unlock they need to make the shop bigger, twice the size - no level up system to make each playthrough easier, they just get harder and harder as you unlock more stuff
It's very fun but I feel like the diffuculties for each new level should introduce some new ideas instead of just reducing your pieces and your moves. It hinders a bit the replayability because the runs feel somewhat similar.
I grabbed the chess themed Humble Bundle this week, and this game alone is already worth the price of admission. The music and the art are both great. The roguelite elements don't feel as punishing or luck based as they tend to be in other games and there is still enough actual chess here to keep you engaged. If you can't get the bundle, definitely pick this up.
This is dressed up, reward driven, weird rules chess, but I rather just play chess.
Queen army let's go
Basically a lot of Chess.com's variants but with more special powers. Basically a chess roguelite. If you like chess you'll like this, if you don't like chess, you'll still probably like this. The only point I'll take off is that the UI in the menu, choices, game, etc. makes it look like a flash game lol.
This game is great! Best chess rogulite i've played to date! Hope the devs keep updating and add some future content though as it can get a little repetitive.
