About
Sometimes a place remembers more than people do.
The Riese Project is an immersive first-person narrative thriller for PC and VR — where realism meets unease.
In the heart of the mountains, where concrete and stone merge with silence, something still waits — unseen, but present.
It won’t tell you a story.
You’ll become part of it.
Deformed corridors.
Traces of those who disappeared.
A silence that isn’t empty.
A world that reacts to your presence — watches, listens, remembers.
This is a story about places that never forgot,
about sounds returning too late,
and about space that speaks instead of people.
Don’t look for a goal.
Find meaning in what remains when everything else falls silent.
The Riese Project in Early Access marks the first chapter of a larger journey — a fragment of something that continues to grow and evolve.
Each update will uncover new layers and new questions.
And the answers? They may never come.
You don’t need to buy anything to step into this world — a free prologue awaits in silence.
But if the echo answered you differently, if curiosity still pulls you deeper, this is where your path begins.
Listen.
This place still speaks.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
This is a neutral recommendation. Honestly, I should probably give this game a negative recommendation based on my experience during my almost 2 hours of playtime. I experienced 4 different game-breaking bugs that I had to get around, usually by restarting the game and losing progress. I should probably refund. The game is beautiful though. It is one of the most beautiful games in PCVR and really represents what should be the current state of PCVR, visually-speaking. This is not another Quest-ified experience. We should expect visuals like this in every newly released Steam VR game. The game may be worth supporting in Early Access just because of the parts of the game that are excellent. There's many objects you can pick up and interact with. It looks near-realistic. The 4 bugs I encountered were frustrating. First bug, the folder you need to drop in the old camera fell to the ground and disappeared. I had to restart the game. Second bug, my left hand got stuck in the blue safe. I had to restart. Third bug, my load game, loaded me into the save file, but without the key the old man who owns the bar gives you. I could not progress. I had to restart the game from the very beginning. Finally, the 4th bug was me falling through the map in the forest. That's when I decided to give up. I know this is Early Access, but for me at least, the game was in an unplayable state. Which is a shame, because I want to support development. This is the kind of game PCVR needs. However, the only reason to buy this game is to support development. What's there, after the 2023 prologue, is really kind of sad. You would expect a full game by now, not whatever this is. I guess this is the re-released prologue, only buggier now. Doesn't make sense to me. Is there any new content here to justify this EA release? Rate 5/10. I only paid $13.50 USD, so it's a gamble and likely a losing investment. I won't refund the game. Hopefully, it pays off. I hope the devs are able to fix the game and expand the content to make it the game we all want in PCVR. However, if I'm being honest, this is a very disappointing start to EA.
I bought this game!
The story places you in the role of Annie, a young woman investigating a secret connected to her grandfather. At the center of this mystery is a World War II bunker, but there isn’t much time to uncover the truth, since this chapter is meant only as a prologue to a larger narrative. The game was originally designed with virtual reality in mind, and while it is fully playable with a mouse and keyboard, the mechanics remain fairly simple and never quite reach their full potential outside VR. As expected for the genre, your main task is to explore various environments and interact with the objects scattered around them. You can pick up many items, rotate them, and examine them closely. However, there are no visual hints on any objects, and most of them do not prompt comments from Annie. The only indication that something can be interacted with is a small hand-shaped cursor that appears when you point at it. Things can get messy quickly, because objects can be picked up, thrown, or accidentally knocked over, leaving the scene cluttered. This becomes a problem when it involves key items required for progression, which are also unmarked. Fortunately, if you toss a crucial object somewhere unreachable or if it clips into the environment, the game resets it to its original location. The same safety feature applies to collectable items stored in your inventory. The inventory system itself takes a moment to get used to. Instead of a dedicated key, you need to press ESC to open the main menu, which appears as a backpack containing both settings and your collected items. When you take an object from the inventory and drop it, it automatically snaps back into the inventory after a few seconds unless you pick it up again. Carefully examining items is essential for solving puzzles and advancing the story. There are no objective markers or quest lists, so you have to pay attention to Annie’s comments and remember what she intends to do next. Otherwise, you may find yourself wandering without direction. When you do trigger the next step of the investigation or discover something important, a tiny owl icon appears on the next significant object. This owl is easy to overlook, and you must click on it to perform the next required action or view something more closely. Puzzles mainly revolve around manipulating mechanical elements in the environment. Unfortunately, these pieces are not visually highlighted in any way. On one hand, this design choice increases immersion, since it encourages you to investigate the environment naturally, as you would in real life. On the other hand, it can lead to frustrating dead ends. For example, the first puzzle involves a safe that requires pressing a tiny confirmation button after entering the code. The second puzzle asks you to play a short melody on a functional piano, which first requires identifying the correct starting note among many keys. Annie also carries a phone, which initially serves as a flashlight. Beyond that basic function, it contains a few text messages and notes worth reading. The most useful feature, however, is the augmented mode. When activated, it displays a map of the surrounding area and highlights unexplored or relevant locations. Since the game is currently in early access, the available content consists of three stages: a cozy cottage, a more open wilderness section, and a short sequence inside the bunker. Altogether, the experience lasts between one and two hours. Despite its promise, the game does have issues. The most noticeable is the lack of visual clues for key interactions. While the first two stages remain manageable, the bunker section includes a moment where progress depends on placing a key from your inventory onto a switch that does not stand out from the environment. Nothing suggests that this piece of scenery is interactable, so I was forced to look for a walkthrough. The second major problem becomes apparent in the wilderness stage and is more disruptive. The area is more open, and since Annie can jump, it is easy to leave the intended path. Many objects and terrain features can trap you if you jump onto them, and though your jump height is adequate, you often cannot jump back out. In one case, I was even able to leap from a cliff into a region of the map the game clearly did not expect you to reach yet. While the game allows manual saving, it cannot rescue you if you save while already stuck. Thankfully, there is an autosave system, so at worst you'll have to repeat a small portion instead of restarting the entire game. Overall, the game both looks and feels good to play, aiming for a high level of immersion that can sometimes make solving problems take longer than expected. Content is still limited for now, but future updates promise more to come.
The Riese Project robi świetne wrażenie już od pierwszych minut dzięki mocnej atmosferze. Szczegółowe podziemne korytarze kompleksu Riese wyglądają bardzo realistycznie i budują napięcie bez używania tanich jumpscare’ów. Eksploracja jest spokojna, ale wciągająca, a każde miejsce opowiada swoją historię dzięki dobrze zaprojektowanemu otoczeniu. Gra stawia na klimat zamiast akcji — i wychodzi jej to naprawdę dobrze. Trzeba jednak mocnego komputera, zwłaszcza w VR, bo gra jest wymagająca graficznie. Darmowy prolog pozwala sprawdzić klimat i wydajność na własnym sprzęcie.
Jakieś problemy z zagadkami np to warto napisać do twórcy gry chętnie słuzy pomocą itd. Testowałem na PC w fps, gdyż nie mam googli VR. Powodzenia w rozwijaniu projektu!
The Riese Project is exactly the direction that PCVR should be taking. Full realism and exploration — with no compromises made for mobile VR. Amazing atmosphere, a mysterious story and the vibe of real underground Riese tunnels. This is not another shooter or tech-demo. Here you get a true VR adventure — searching, discovering, manipulating objects, logical puzzles, and a narrative that pulls you in and never serves answers on a plate. I’m very curious about the next locations and where this story is going. This project has huge potential and I believe it can become one of the important PCVR titles. Cons: VR has high hardware requirements — but I kind of get the approach: hardware moves forward, and the dev is aiming for what’s ahead. I’m waiting for the new Valve VR myself. So maybe it’s not a flaw but a strategy. Some mechanics are slightly unintuitive — object manipulation in FPP can act weird. I don’t see a difference between Normal and High graphic settings. In the Prologue there were subtitles in VR — now I can see them only in FPP. That said — I support and recommend the game 🙂 Waiting for updates!

Блевотное взаимодействие с предметами в FPP выбесило в первые 10 минут. Речь актеров - просто мемас.
Important: The game now works with the Valve Index. Still my favorite hmd for this game is the Rift CV1, as the game looks more blurry using lcd hmds. This is due to the game forcing TAA or DLSS for antialiasing. The game has performance issues and uses the Unreal Engine 5 for some great lighting and shadows, but do not bother unless you have an RTX 3090, 4070 Ti, 5070 or faster. Using Index, res 200% will limit the blurriness - and activating motion smoothing can be a great help. After waiting 2.5 years - what has changed? This still is a favorite VR game, but having finished both the Prologue and the early access versions, I'm not sure I detect much of a difference. I was expecting a lot more after 2.5 years. Apart from adding 2D support, which means nothing to VR players, it feels much like a standstill. Sure there are more cakes and dolls/toys in the house, and the hidden room in the attic looks a lot better - and the house surroundings look better - but all this is not important. - Important will be adding more locations and many more puzzles. For now it's hard to recommend the early access over the Prologue, unless some persons want to support the game devs financially. Note that I paid for the Prologue before it was free - and got the early access version for free. So I did pay for the game. The game has two settings for graphics: Normal or High, thus no detailed graphics settings. My performance with the Asus Strix OC RTX 3090 is 30 to 45 fps using Rift CV1 ss 1.8. That's using Normal graphics settings instead of High. But I do not see any difference between Normal and High - High would pull me down into 20 - 30 fps. This is the same performance I got 2.5 years ago, I do not see any performance improvements. To make the game playable for most VR users, devs need to double or even triple performance - which probably would be a challenge even for major developers like Valve. The game works, but loading a saved game in the house may break the game. So it is probably best to finish the house level in one run. Some feedback to the devs: The piano puzzle is still great. Invisible walls are not great. Add locked gates instead or a fence? Even if I like this kind of music, the music video feels inappropriate and misguided for the in-game atmosphere - I'm not sure the video is needed. Locomotion is a great issue, teleport helps, but you should be able to play without any teleport. The water looks dead, should be animated with small waves. Many more locations are needed to make this feel like a proper game. The metal wire from the big log to the tractor ends in free air and should be properly attached to the tractor. Often I could not go through an open door, unless I reduced my height - Prologue has same issue - I'm 1.84 meters tall and do not have this issue in other games. Even with current issues, this still is an impressive game, the above are just some suggestions to add more polish. The most important thing would now be to add more locations, more story and puzzles - and to optimize performance. 2c.
