As a lifelong fan of the games being parodied/homaged I really should have been the target audience for TRotEotGRoAT. I love the general concept of a puzzlebox/mystery centered on a remake of a classic JRPG, but unfortunately this one really crosses the line from "challenging and requires looking through everything at your disposal" to "actively hostile to the player" with the combat challenges. At the point where I was told to use a specific element to advance, with no indication that any of my available attacks were of that element and no way to leave the area I was in to try to get more pages of information that might tell me, I decided I was done. I really don't think the general concept of the combat puzzles was even necessary given that there's nothing like them in the 90s games and I doubt anyone would have much enjoyed a traditional turn-based RPG that had them. I certainly don't recommend this one.
This is a game unlike any other I've played in recent years and it has my recommendation based on that alone. Separately, I too wish I will one day have the savoir faire to hand my unlocked laptop (which is currently livestreaming to Twitch) to a random person on the street, say "Hey you, record me", then run off not just trusting but knowing that the person will follow me for the rest of the day instead of doing a 360 and bolting with the computer.
Effectively plays like a series of escape room puzzles dressed up as a JRPG. A lot of the fun of this game is around discovering the story and secrets of the game as well as the 'story' around the creation of the game itself. It's a good time, I highly recommend it.
Wow, this game is definitely something. I wouldn't call this game perfect, no, gameplay is slow and closer to the end gets sloggy (especially combat animations) but everything else is another story. The story, the presentation, this game oozes love that developers put into it (Tunic inspiration especially welcome :)). I don't know how to recommend this game without spoiling it so just go and play it, it's not long and really worth it.
This is a great piece of metafiction that I'll probably be thinking about for a long time. The way it approaches nostalgia and the philosophy of RPG remakes is so fascinating! My only real gripe is that the combat can be slow in the second half of the game.
I love Darkhart!
This game has a very simple concept executed fairly well. The puzzles are fairly straight forward once you know how to do them, but it's still very fun to try and figure out the solutions. One minor nitpick is that you can get somewhat soft-locked for a bit if you use a bit of context clues/associative thinking. You can technically still progress if this happens, it just makes some things a bit harder. (you can go back and collect the things that you've missed at a later point in the game.) Overall the game is pretty fun as long as you're into meta games.
This game is simultaneously a commentary on metatextual games being too far up their own butts *and* too far up its own butt that is loops around into something great. It's so sincere in itself and in the rage behind it. 10/10. This is what Jonathan Blow should have become.
This is the best Remake possible for this licence
great game
The game itself is pretty good. Had a blast playing through the meta! ... but the soundtrack is out of this world! Those songs keeps repeating in my head and I'm enjoying every bit of it! A masterful retro-style soundtrack that, in and of itself, makes the whole game worth playing! Of course, there's moments of confusion and where you feel like you're aimlessly roaming around, but there's just so much that you always end up discovering something new anyway! I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing this game. Well done to the Devs, you're proof that the future is Indie! Only through them do I get to find my passion for gaming soar back from its AAA numbness, and it means a lot to me. :)
