Verity Lux is straight up fire! Tough challenge but love the steampunk life and getting my detective on! Story is great.
A very interesting world with an immersive lore. With a slow build up, it gets pretty intense the more mysteries you uncover. Pretty chill game with a lot of different dialogue routes to take
Overall, I liked it. It was short and sweet. The "bad" list below is the longer one, but it doesn't outweigh the good. The accumulation of those problems gives an impression of cheapness, which is a shame. With some bugfixes, editing, and visual tweaks, it can look low-budget instead of low-quality.
Bad
- Some icons are so low resolution they're pixelated (e.g., the one linking to mental health support) and some are both too large and simple so they look like stock icons from a pack (e.g., the play menu icons). - Scene transitions are messy. I can see the next line before the screen fades to black. Sometimes there's a black outline of Verity on the right side instead of another character. Sometimes a different image of my conversation partner appears for a second at the end of a call. Also, the transitions are the same whether a call is ending or a day is. I think a transition to another day should stand out. - Why is the whole game in such low resolution? - The clue finding and combining portions are too easy. The clues stand out visually because of their jagged edges. And combining them correctly takes almost no thought. The game gives the impression of having investigation mechanics, but I don't think they're sufficient. - I clicked on the dove icon to see where it would send me. The use of in-game images and overall unprofessional look of the website made me wonder at first whether it was legitimate or part of the fiction. - There are many typos in the dialogue and other bugs. I reported many but not all because it became tiresome. On that note, it would've been convenient if the bug reporting menu kept my entered text when I closed the menu without submitting it. I frequently went back to the play screen to refer to a detail in the report and had to re-enter everything every time. Especially the username part, that won't change.
Good
- The characters and their dialogue are interesting. The banter is fun to read. - The overarching mystery is intriguing enough to keep me going. - It was fun noticing the references, and I liked the way the message was turned into the game's lore. - The length felt right.
If you're a fan of mystery games then this is perfect for you. It's story is captivating and I often found myself in the story wondering if I made the right choice when following leads. The artwork is amazing and character designs are so unique. I can definitely see myself in the future trying out different options to see if it'll change the outcomes.
I quickly got stuck. Not sure what to do next, where to go. I didn't see any ability to get help early on, and even as far as I got, it wasn't smooth sailing. I'm kinda done with this game.
Personally, the art is pretty, the interactive mechanics of the game are intriguing, and the music fits at each of the locations. Where it turns to a sideways thumb is when it feels too much dialogue is introduced, which, along with that, the narrative becomes a little convoluted to wrap my head around. I do appreciate that the dialogue options actually have correlated concequences/ outcomes depending on what you choose, but the sheer amount of it tests my patience with wanting to progress the plot on Verity's end. This experience is for those who want a detailed and complex world with a lot of characters and personalities.
I have been having a lot of fun well playing this game. It has very interesting twists and turns in the story, and I'm excited to see were it leads. It was pretty easy for me to learn the controls and how the game works. I really like how the choices that you make have different effects, like how at one point characters started to talk about someone that I had totally missed because I had ended the investigation too early. I also really like the cast of characters, they all feel really flushed out, even if they only have a miner role. The only real complaint that I have is that there is a lot of reading that needs to be done, some of the characters dialog is quite winded, and the word use can be rather confusing. Other then that I have been really enjoying this game, and its rather easy to pick up and hard to put down!
