About

Five years ago, The Viscount and its crew set sail through The Pale Passage in search of absolute magnetic South. The ship and its crew were tragically lost to the ice, never to be seen again. Her sister ship, The Temperance shall follow in her path, hoping to find answers where The Viscount failed.

A polar exploration game set in an unforgiving frozen wasteland where you embark on a treacherous voyage across the ice and through the Pale Beyond. It’s a stunning yet harsh landscape that can change at any moment.
Every decision matters and the ice doesn’t care.
As the expedition unfolds and the Polar Winter approaches, every decision you make will have a meaningful impact on the story as you navigate your way across the ice.

You didn’t ask to lead this expedition, but here you are. Stuck in the ice, Captain missing, miles from civilisation. Someone has to take charge.
Manage your meagre resources, balance safety and morale, make the hard calls, and head in the only direction you can - through The Pale Beyond.
Keeping the crew (and sled dogs) safe, fed, and warm during the expedition is imperative. Surviving the ice will matter little in the face of a mutiny. Every vote will count. So keep the crew on your side.

Featuring original musical compositions, shanties and accordion tunes that will dynamically evolve alongside your journey.

Saltstone Studios is located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Their first game was The Pale Beyond, a story-driven survival management game.
The team is interested in exploring novel systems-based narrative games that combine the kind of deep choice and consequence narratives you find in interactive fiction, with extensive systems more common from other genres - all designed to bring in-depth worlds and characters to life.
Each title draws direct influences from the complex history of Ireland and Britain, with extensive literary and historical research. Every pixel, sentence, and musical note, is hand crafted in house with care and attention.

Can be difficult with all of the mechanics and management system in mind, but is a very creative and amazing experience. Music fits the different areas of the story you are at. Slim margin for a number of choices but is engaging and requires thought. 9/10 would recommend
The game is great. It has a beautifully writen story and interesting characters. The survival mechanics are basic but fun to engage with.
When I first started The Pale Beyond earlier this month, I could not bring myself to play. I did not enjoy making these choices and felt stressed and overwhelmed at the consequences that came with them. But each of the core members of the Temperance were so well written, so well developed, that once I pushed myself to play more, there came a point when I felt a real responsibility for and kinship with them, and felt that I MUST continue. This is a true "choices matter" game, one where allocating food and fuel, choosing a dialogue option, or making an executive decision can truly make all difference. There were weeks when morale was low, and I'd be holding my breath every time I pressed "E" to end the week, not knowing what the next would have in store; not knowing whether this week's efforts were truly enough, even though morale, fuel, and food were at an all-time high. This game truly has a way of humbling you. In any case, both the gameplay and the narrative grew on me. I did not expect to crack a genuine smile upon hearing the spirits of my crew being lifted, or when my crew and I grew familiar with one another and would crack jokes every once in a while. So many outcomes in this game felt earned through blood, sweat, and tears (or rather anxiety inducing events and decisions) and that's a testament to what I think is an outstanding marriage between game mechanics and writing. This game simulates "getting the hang of things" so well by establishing a set structure to the proceedings of each day, but gives you the freedom to perform your duties when and however you'd like, so you have a real shot at manipulating each day's outcomes to your favor--most of the time, and that's brilliant. (E.g. feeding the hoosh/furnace before taking daily requests so you can fulfill resource requirements, or sending an engineer to turn up the heat to cure frozen crew so you'll have more people to work with throughout the day.) I loved the narrative themes on reality vs. superstition, what it means/takes to be a leader, and whether the ends justify the means, and vice versa. At every pivotal step, when confronted with the question of what mattered more: the crew or the mission? I had a good hard think about it because the possibility of success was always around the corner--truly the worst combination of the "three feet from gold" concept combined with sunk cost fallacy. I really can't believe how invested I've become, in what is basically a visual novel + resource management sim. I'm surprised I like this game as much as I do now, especially because of my initial reaction to it, but I'm glad I pressed on. This is one of, if not THE best game I played this year. This I'll be thinking about this game and my crew for some time, and I'm excited for the studio's next game. 10/10; this game really makes you FEEL like a captain.
An amazing mix between survival resource management and visual novel, very fun gameplay-wise and highly engaging story and characters
Thank you for this wonderful journey!
a simple came, but the storytelling ws good and I really felt for the characters
