About
The Necromancer's Tale is a story-rich top-down RPG where you play the role of a minor noble in the 18th Century, drawn into the Dark Necromantic Arts as you seek knowledge and revenge. Great power awaits... along with the weird, the morbid, and a gradual descent into madness.
This is best described as a Necromancer Origin Story: you start off as a regular person, and gradually get drawn into the Dark Arts. Your powers must be earned: you need to put in your time sneaking and studying as you gradually become a master of the undead. This is a tale about the acquisition of power, what you're willing to do for it, and what it does to you.
Before you lies a great spellbook, filled with powerful rites of death and reanimation. Can you decipher the pages and master its arcane rituals without losing your mind or being strung up by the townsfolk? Your progress will require great determination, cunning and secrecy.
The Necromancer's Tale is a story-rich game, with 400,000 words of hand-written narrative and lore, in which you converse with 180+ NPC characters, each with their own hand-drawn portrait art (we have not used any generative AI in the game). You will investigate, negotiate, coerce and flatter in order to progress your aims. The game's Trust system means that your choices - even in conversation - really matter. If the townsfolk's trust drops too low, you will find your choices are affected - if it drops further still, you will surely be tried in court and hanged, or lynched by a frenzied mob.
Your character is created in an interactive and fully voiced backstory, defining your gender, early life, skills and career (military, diplomatic, or academic). Narrative options during the main game are affected by these choices.

The game involves tactical turn-based combats between you, your allies and your undead minions - versus a range of enemies, natural and supernatural. Harness a range of weapons, rituals, and battle spells to defeat your foes.
The Necromancer's Tale is set in an alternative-history Kingdom near Venice and the Adriatic Sea, in 1733. This is a time at the cusp of rational thought and superstition; science and magic. The world is dark and dangerous; courtly intrigue collides with black magic even as chemistry emerges from alchemy.
A play-through will take between 25 and 50 hours, depending on how much side content and world exploration you engage with, and depending on whether you play the battles or use automatic combat resolution. There are multiple endings through which you see your choices play out into the future.
The Necromancer's Tale is only available officially in English. However, translations to several other languages have been made by the community. Please check the Steam forums for details.

Some flaws and quest steps are a little confusing at time, but overall very enjoyable and some good story telling/building in the game. Thoroughly enjoyed beating the heck out of the enemy soldiers at the end with a huge group of undead.
Great game about necromancy and how magical influences and desperate circumstances might threaten to erode your sense of morality. I appreciate that the game's dialogue options let you roleplay how far (or how little!) your character falls in the face of these factors.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

A bit linear, but - also because of that - very good character development, and ultimately really moving. It's the story more than the gameplay.
I initially picked this game up and despite feeling like this game was tailor made for me, I could not get into it. I ended up initially uninstalling it and left it alone for some time. A month or two passed and something kept nagging at me to give it another a shot, and I eventually gave in and picked it back up. Turns out, I was mere moments away from where the story really began to pick up and once I raised my first minion, I was absolutely hooked and the next thing I knew an entire day had practically evaporated on me. No, this game is not a AAA polished masterpiece. I found some of the mechanics to be clunky and I did not particularly enjoy being able to repeat already used dialogue options, but once the story picked up, I instantly gave all the things that bothered me a pass. We need more games like this. It is a slow burn, no doubt, but once it hooks you, that no longer matters because you just want to keep pushing to see what happens next. Awesome game, will probably come back to it again down the road
This is honestly one of the best narrative games I’ve played in my entire life. I absolutely loved it from beginning to end. The story is compelling from the very start. That constant feeling of mystery, the investigation, and the desire to uncover more and more kept me completely hooked. The atmosphere and storytelling actually inspired me so much that it made me want to work on my own book again. The gameplay is relatively simple, but incredibly effective. I especially loved the necromancy system and the ritual mechanics. Having to figure out the necromancy book and slowly understand how everything works was genuinely so much fun. That being said, I do have one small criticism. I found the last chapter a little less compelling than the first half of the game. Some of the choices towards the end felt a bit less meaningful, especially because you are ultimately pushed toward taking a specific path. However, the final decision at the end of the game made up for it in my opinion, and I really appreciated where the story ultimately went. I really hope more people discover this masterpiece, because it deserves so much more attention. I loved every minute of it.
The game has an incredible story and wonderful characters. The only complaint I can find is that some of the objectives are far too difficult to figure out without a ton of googling
