I picked this up because it reminded me of the old Warcraft 3 tower defense maps I used to play. I've never seen mazing in a standalone tower defense game before. Honestly this was a lot more fun than I expected. The tower defense mechanics are solid and well developed. Making mazes, unlocking new towers, buffing towers, etc, is a lot of fun. I found myself getting really invested in my strategy and build. It needs to be fleshed out with more content, music, maps, etc, but given that it's in early access, I am very happy with what I got so far. This is a very promising tower defense game.
Liked: - Core concept of Mazing is fun, levels are laid out with obstacles so mazing never becomes routine - Enemy variety ensures you can't just spam a specific strategy too easily, need to have a decent deck - Deck concept helps slowly introduce new features over time - Difficulty feels just right, no level has "stumped" me but I've had to change my approach a few times - Music and Art - Performance is great Disliked: - Text size! Was way too small on my monitor! - More music! The song that plays during rounds is great but more variety would be a welcome addition. Bugs: - 1 small bug exists where a tower can be duplicated while replacing another tower - Tutorial window didn't go away after my round started Overall really love this game, while there's the promise of more content in the future it feels like a fully fledged game as is. 10/10
This is a very unique tower defense game. Very enjoyable to play and very much replayable.
Overall The Necromancer Cometh is a pretty enjoyable, albeit simple, tower defense game with a limited amount of deck building mechanics - fun enough to drop in and play, though will be fairly familiar to most people who have enjoyed the genre for a while. Pros - - Easy to get into - Visual Style is nostalgic and clear - Quick cycle between runs - so if you lose, you're back to trying quickly, if you win, you're in the next stage quickly - They thankfully included a gold auto-pickup in the day 0 patch (yay) Cons - - Meta Progression feels a little flat after unlocking the cards (would love more to spend points on than thickening deck or gold) - Can't directly upgrade towers (have to use other towers, or global boosts) - Changing targeting on towers feels sluggish, would love some way to set defaults, toggle groups, etc. to make it feel better Note - I think the game would benefit a lot from between mission text blurbs to build a story or world around it. A very fun Tower Defense Game with Card Deck Building. With the Card Deck aspect is the game different to a normal Tower Defense and you can try different play style with these Cards. The Graphic is totally fine and I can recommend the game if you want to try something new. This game has a lot of character and polish. It serves a niche genre well employing a lot of well thought out mechanics and quality of life features that make it a breeze to play and get addicted to the simple but engaging gameplay loop. Great work, really looking forward to the full release!
I think the Gaming cavern said it best! "... It's the most tower defense tower defense I've tower defensed in a long time.” But seriously though, I am loving all the depth and heart there is in this game. It has really nice polish and cute yet spooky vibe to it. Using the deck building mechanic to add in an extra element of randomness to what can otherwise be a pretty repetitive concept was a fun new take on tower defense, for sure! Only a few minor UI/UX quirks that could be a tad smoother, but otherwise something that I could easily see my self coming back to time and time again when I just need a solid tower defense game in my life!
The combination of deck building, creating a maze with the towers, and strategy variety makes for a fun tower defense game. There are a lot of options for towers with different buffs which has been fun to min-max a bit. The music is also pretty good, though there are a limited number of tracks at the moment. Some type of top-score mechanic for free play would be nice, though is easy enough to track the wave number myself.
A neat tower defense game where you design your own route! It brings back fond memories for those who enjoyed playing Warcraft 3 mods in the past. The addition of deckbuilding brings customization and replay value, enabling you to tackle the game from different angles that suit your preferred playstyle. Excited to see what new content is added before the full release!
Fun, simple, lots of levels. Meta progression seems fair and overall has a focus on gameplay over grinding power. Randomness can make replaying the same level a little different, but never frustrating levels of RNG.
