i had no idea what to expect from this, a near zero review rpgmaker game. i was browsing the rpgmaker games and laughed at the old man i didnt recognize on the title screen and that's what intrigued me. this was a wild ride. i played this with a friend watching and we were spitballing what we thought was happening and was immediately thrown off. overall, great! i want to play it again and get the other ending. the questions were very compelling and i found myself stumped on what to answer. my friend is now interested in the works that inspired you to make this game. super cool man! :)
I have played through once so far and I will definitely play again. It's a short game but it definitely has enough Schopenhauer to satisfy most people. The quest is fun and there is a feeling that the story is hinting at something larger than one playthrough could possibly incover. The choices of how the character understands the world allow for a kind of philosophical customisation that you don't get in many games.
A Life of Author is less a conventional game than a philosophical provocation, staging a quiet but persistent inquiry into authorship, consciousness, and the fractured self. Through its implicit engagement with dualism, the game dissolves the illusion of a unified identity, positioning the player simultaneously as creator and construct, will and constraint. Meaning here is not revealed but manufactured under pressure, stripped of transcendental assurances and divine arbitration. Religious frameworks, when implicitly contrasted, appear as epistemic shortcuts, offering narrative closure where the game insists on ambiguity and intellectual responsibility. In rejecting metaphysical consolation, A Life of Author aligns itself with a secular, existential outlook that treats uncertainty not as a failure of understanding but as its precondition, ultimately suggesting that to live, like to write, is to act without guarantees and accept authorship of one’s own incompleteness. Thank you for this.
The language used in this game might be a little confusing especially for ones who did not have much contact with philosophy. The character of in game Artur Schopenhauer seems to be very close, and true to his real one. I feel a little dissatisfied with questions. Especially the first one is not related to Artur, but to Immanuel Kant. It's very good quote and only shows how important for philosophy and for Artur, Kant was. Still I feel like he was a little absent in a game only "glimpsed". I missed some pretty deep questions other than "how many is worlds? think about it!". Also how can you missed a story with crossroad sign! It was such a cool story which deeply show inner contradiction of practical philososphy of Artur Schopenhauer and how he lived. I also have a problem to understoodat at which university we play (Jena or Getynga) and is Hanna a real person or some kind of impression, soem strange will of Schopenheuer. I think she should be held and written better. I also found that "japanese themes" like small active girl and other color skin woodsman (in 18th century Germany) as unnecessary and ruining impression it's something else than just game. Still though indeed i enjoyed that game, and beat it from start to finish 2 times. For such a low price is a very good spent time.
I want to play this so badly, but it always freezes :( It wasn't bad so far, amused me couple times... And even had great points I wasn't aware of some time... OMG can you make Nietzsche game too? I wrote email waiting for support! Don't read if you don't want to be ULTRA DEPRESSED!!! BTW this game gives me existential feelings: like there should be something more than this, world is so boring and monotonous/homogenous... Schopenhauer said: real is rarely is sufficient in providing diversity and capturing interest of genius: https://iep.utm.edu/boredom/ I have insane Object Petit A, i am bored of all known objects to humanity, i felt like there should be something more meaningful, like glimpse to another universe, but then i come out of my dreams and look: and there isn't: how strange! Even power is boring: it is illusion and you have to serve interests of other ppl... Like it wouldn't be enough life is pendulum between pain and boredom, yet we have Object Petit A: expecations and concepts we made in our mind about things, that don't even exist and are not even possible to satisfy... It is stange tho, when i wrote this i recalled flash back of a reality unlike others where everything is completely different! Real life is so hopelessly boring, "Watson look at this yellow fog that is overlapping grey buildings in this world without perspective" - Sherlock Holmes... I wished there was more goodness and love and art in the world, but now i am so empty that i cannot even feel anything/want... I was at the end life is so sucky and sterile it is crazy! Tho you make good point in game: it is perhaps lesser of all evils, if we lived in utopia we would murder each other, or die from boredom! That is scary thought that this is yet best there is... When life is hell! Nietzsche said: life hides from truths, lies are necessary so life is even possible in the first place, which begs the question: how terrible life really is, if it is only possible based on lie. Organisms which saw closer to truth did extinct... Even theory of evolutions supports this... https://scholarcommons.scu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1052&context=phi EDIT: OK now it let me finish! Must admit i didn't understand ending at all, but i have chronic pain and memory issues and don't remember much of Schopenhaur's philosophy of the bat, i have affective memory, which makes it hard to recall information on demand... This should be top1 game on steam i will gift it to all "my limited number" of friends. Everyone in the world should know this, when ceaseless striving ends, when???
Schopi tira a alguien que estaba haciendo ruido por las escaleras, cómo no le voy a dar un 10/10 a esta obra maestra? Demasiado fiel al manga.
A game so simple, yet so beautiful...
