I've been playing the developers games for a long time now so as soon as I heard this was released I had to buy it right away. So far they haven't made a game that I haven't enjoyed but when I first heard of The Hunter's Path I was especially curious about how it would turn out as it's really difference from Evidence Of Life and Terrene. I was fortunate enough to play a lot of this game before it was released on Steam to help identify bugs and provide feedback. I am happy to say that the devs have once again made a fun and addictive experience with The Hunter's Path. I don't do as many reviews as I should these days but I really felt like this game deserved one so here we go. • One thing that stood out to me compared to their previous works on Steam is that the game can have a really chill vibe at times. The multiple types of scenarios really allow you to decide and shape what kind of experience you want to have. If you want a heavy survival focused experience where you have a lot to worry about you have that. If you want a more chill experience where you are free to hunt and survive at your own pace you have that. If you want a more focused experience like with the scenario that has you looking after a farm then you have that too. Overall there is a good variety to the gameplay, certainly a lot more than I expected to find. • There are a lot of different mechanics that go into making the survival experience feel great to play. From fishing to drying meat, paying attention to the wind direction when hunting so animals don't catch your scent, managing your body temperature to ensure you aren't overexerting yourself, and purifying water to ensure you also have a steady supply. Everything really comes together and works to make the experience feel in depth and engaging. • The amount of things you can craft is pretty cool. From basic survival/crafting tools, to base building items, to weapons to help you hunt more efficiently I really felt like the game did a good job of making me want to keep progressing to build up my base and improve my gear options. I enjoyed having a cozy cabin I could chill in when I wasn't committing horrible unspeakable acts on the wildlife around my base (I built a massive animal torture maze where nothing can run from me, it's a long story). • The weather system isn't just for show and I did actually find myself having to pay attention to how it was affecting my character which was a nice addition to the survival experience. It also made the cold nights have more of an impact for me and made me even happier with my cozy cabin. There is also something really creepy about when that fog rolls in and your visibility gets reduced. I knew there weren't any monsters or anything in the game but I still felt a little bit of tension when the fog rolled in while out hunting bears or boar. • There are a variety of POIs you can stumble upon and they can offer some good resources. I actually think some of them are pretty cool to come across because I found myself almost making my own story up as to why these things were there and what happened that caused them to be in the state they are in. I also felt like they did a good job of making the map feel a bit more interesting. • The variety of animals and how they act is a highlight for me. You actively have to pay attention if a deer may be nearby and then you have to move accordingly or you can startle it. Rabbits work much the same way but I found them easier to catch, especially with the option of using traps. Boars, especially during foggy days, have unironically gave me a jump scare when they come sprinting at me. Boars are no joke and while they can be a great meat supply they will usually go on the attack when confronted. With that said they will also retreat when taking some damage which leads me to the other thing I really loved about hunting animals in this game. If you wound an animal it will often take off leaving a slight blood trail you can track to find them again. I remember on one occasion I was tracking a deer I had shot with a bow. I wasn't paying attention and before I knew it the fog had rolled in and night had arrived which made tracking it a lot harder. Suddenly I had a bear charge me and killed me. Learning how the different animals act feels rewarding when you start really bringing in more resources efficiently. • The progress of starting out with a basic bedroll to eventually having a cabin feels rewarding. Especially when those really cold nights roll in and instead of huddling around a fire for warmth you are crafting and cooking in the safety of your cabin. • The music really fits the game well. The main menu music really sets the mood for the game with a chill guitar track. It kind of reminded me of when I would sit around a fire in S.T.A.L.K.E.R and just listen to someone play the guitar. The tracks aren't overbearing or too in the way, They just sit nicely in the background and accompany you through your journey. It's really different from the music in the developers previous games but it is just as well done. • The UI took a little getting used to for me but once I was used to it I ended up really liking it. You pretty much have everything available to you at any given time and quick readouts of the current state of your character. You can quickly build multiples of items which was a big help in my journey to create something that would probably be studied by psychologists if they ever found my save. The only thing I wish was different is that you could keep moving your character when hovering over the side menus. Sometimes I am walking a long distance but want to look through my inventory which stops my movement. • The art style is really well done and a big shift from their previous games. All the animals, craftables, and equipment looks great. The environments and the way they keep the character visible when walking under large trees works really well. The variety of the sprites is actually really cool and you can tell the devs really cared about the presentation of the game. It wasn't just something quick they wanted to do and put out for sale which I sometimes feel is the case when it comes to survival games from indie devs. You really do feel like you are out in the woods when you are tracking animals and farms look great when you have a lot going on and have organized them. Overall this game was definitely worth the money for me and in total before it's release on Steam I spent about 25 hours with the game. It's $12.99 in Canada which I feel is a totally fair price for the amount of time and enjoyment I got out of it and that was all before they added a ton of stuff in this full release. As you can imagine I am really excited to jump back in and see what horrible things I can do. Really want to congratulate the devs on this one. I think it really serves to show off how much they have grown and evolved as developers when they not only release something very different from their previous games but then end up nailing it. Lastly, for those as deranged as me let me give you a tip, animals can't pass through some buildable objects. This means that if you have the time and the willpower you could, I don't know, build a complex system of cubes that trap all animals that spawn in the game so they can't run from you anymore. You can then expand this hell across the entire map so you have a network of pathways you can take to collect your meat which really at that point is all you're doing. Turns out The Hunter's "Path" is really a psychological torture park for every species of animal. I remember at one point while I was playing and streaming the game some asked me "do you sneak when you get near an animal" and I just said "there is no point in sneaking, they can't get away from me if they wanted to". Hope others enjoy this game as much as I have. I really think this game will be perfect for people who enjoy survival games. Cheers.
Super cool game! Especially if you into old school type surviving games you will enjoy this one!
Like this game for the most part but think there are some things that need fixing. For starters the fishing nets need increased catch chances cause with four of them i only managed to get 2 perch before they broke in a week. The animal calls are terrible and not worth the time you put in for them, they break after 2 uses and their not really effective in calling in any animals, nothing has ever shown up for me even when im hiding in blinds. Farming could possibly be good but it takes a very long time for them to actually sustain you daily, there arent any bonuses for uses soil to farm so you get the exact same amount of soy beans as just finding them in the wild, berries can drop more but its a gamble since they give so little already. Fishing is the only real good way to get food (only ever saw rabbits even with callers) but sometimes the fish can be too far for your rod to reach so you end up having to wait or spend half the day running to another pond , another problem with fishing is you need worms which you need alot of for compost bins so you end up having to pick one or the other. Also string crafting times need to be decreased, spend whole days having to craft them. All in all though i really like the core gameplay and the music is really chill, just think it needs some tweaks.
The devs behind Terrene (I loved Terrene!) have released a new top-down survival game. Controls could use a touch more polish but the game mechanics are solid. Lots of crafting, farming, hunting & building to be done. My favourite feature is that it includes multiple campaigns, each favouring a different playstyle (survival, hunting, building); some endless, some story-, some challenge-based. Прикольная выживалка, цена дорогая для начала, но если будут обновления и игра будет становиться лучше, то не зря потратился, если ещё сделают русский перевод, то будет очень хорошо.
Hard to get the hang of at first, but once you do its a lot of fun. Also, hi mark!
