the grim ending is a ~1.5-hour 3rd-person point & click adventure. it looks and feels like the classics, with commands like look at, take, etc. none of the modern-day conveniences of simply clicking stuff to examine or pick up, or double-click to move faster, but right click cycles through available commands. it's fully and badly voiced (removing all the annoying noises would improve things considerably) and lets you save manually anytime, but initially only over a single slot. you know, unlike games from 30 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ years ago with as many saves as you wanted. there are multiple endings based on decisions, which made the single save slot even worse, but 5 additional slots got patched in after this review got posted. the story involves the main character waking up in hell. the boss is annoying as hell as well and the horrible voiceovers don't help. you're tasked with taking pictures of stuff, which in turn makes them disappear. I guess that's one way to clean up all the colors and living things on a gray landscape that is the land of the dead. eventually you start to wise up and can decide how to go about certain things. with multiple saves I would've saved regularly and tried different things, but as is, I went with what I thought best, plus reloaded the save before the end to check another conclusion. good enough. the game was initially and insanely priced at $15, which got permanently halved shortly after. for that much money, or any money really, it's not unreasonable to expect at least some settings, but there are none. can't set volumes or toggle the awful speech, music or subtitles, nothing. subtitles are always on, often with missing punctuation and lots of grammar mistakes. apparently, we're lucky to have alt+enter put the game in a smaller, non-resizable window, but that doesn't have much to do with the developer. otherwise it's good enough for a quick point & click fix, but the price point is still too high, especially considering how lacking it is functionality-wise. nothing wrong with trying to imitate olden times, but when decades later you're offering less than those games, it's laughable. only on deep sale.
It’s just a stone, and it doesn’t roll
A grim looking point and click adventure, and without spoiling it, it indeed does end grim. It's a short game (about 1 hour) combined with how the price was i would have given it a thumbs down. But then i got to talk with the dev, and 9 out of 10 times they don't even bother to talk, but this one did and he is very friendly and open to suggestions, like the price has already been lowered, and it might even some more in the future. The puzzles aren't overall hard, you got this boss and you need to take pictures of items scattered around and then bring them back until you get your promotion (or not). My other quirks were that there are a bunch of obvious typo's which also will be adressed and the game will get some achievements too. If you don't mind a little diamond in the rough, it's fine to get it now, or wait a little more till it's polished.
I bought this game over winter sales along with maaany other "mini-games" and I didn't had many expectations for it.. I liked the funny "devil" voice in the video and the design of Grimmy, so I went for it.. Oh was I surprised! It really is a hidden gem! It's fast to complete a run but it does have multiple endings so you'll find yourself wanting to go back and discover more. The music is amazing, as well as, the art of the game. I didn't encounter bugs with the game. The story is simple, but also very complicated and your fantasy will run wild. The puzzles initially seem easy (and they are), but if you want to discover everything, you'll come to realize you reeeally need to get your mind to work on alternatives. As far as voice acting goes, it fits perfectly to the atmosphere and the characters. All in all, I would say you need about 1h for your first run and 4-5h to complete every possible ending (without a guide) as, even if you do the initial sections very fast or use the 1 save slot (my only "complaint" so far), you'll still need to think hard over your next steps. Great concept and execution! I wish more new point and click games were like this one. Original game with known concepts but somehow it still manages to deliver a fresh story and a different take on the "usual". You'll feel sad, you'll feel happy, you'll feel disappointed but also you'll feel completely satisfied in the end when you see all of it. Don't miss out on this one. Don't skip it. Don't categorize it as "one of many", it is not.. Highly recommended for everyone! For more reviews, follow my curator https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44864435-Mewesome-Reviews/
The Grim Ending is a pretty impressive hidden gem. It always surprises me when small indie games have full voice acting, especially when it's done this well. This game isn't necessarily ground-breaking or anything, but it's still a pretty good point-and-click adventure. The abstract and mostly barren atmosphere is strongly reminiscent of Salad Fingers, but the game doesn't carry the same creepiness factor along with it. It may touch on a few dark topics, but it doesn't take it to the extreme. One complaint I have about the game is that there's only one save slot. Normally this wouldn't bother me at all, but the game has multiple endings, and from my understanding of the 'choices matter' elements, you would need to start the game roughly from the beginning to get some of the possible results instead of reloading an earlier save. This is a minor detail though, and it doesn't really take away from what the game actually is. Plus, the game will generally take around an hour to complete on your first playthrough, so replaying it to the end to see everything the game has to offer doesn't feel like some huge chore. It's mainly just a tad droning due to the fact that point-and-click games often have no replay value whatsoever, since you're just solving the same puzzles you already know the solutions to. While it's a pretty short game and the puzzles are pretty average in terms of expectations and difficulty, the overall style and theme of the environment are the main attractions for this game. If you're already into point-and-click games and you think you would appreciate the barren, surreal-ish environment portrayed through the screenshots, then I think this game is worth it. In any case, I feel as if this game is underappreciated, with only 5 written Steam reviews at the time of writing this. Please show this game some support if you think you would enjoy it; I think these developers deserve more support because it's clear that they were at least somewhat passionate about the development this game.
The game has a pleasantly dark atmosphere. It is fascinating how simply the game is constructed, and yet still draws the player in. Love the concept.
Get to work slave
Do as your boss commands. Question nothing, you're here to obey. The world is dead. Your job is to keep it that way.
