If you enjoyed the other Ace Attorney games, you'll enjoy this. If you enjoyed the original Sherlock Holmes stories, you'll really enjoy this. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a prequel/spin-off of the main Ace Attorney games. Given that it's chronologically the first entry in the series, you can start your Ace Attorney journey from here, though I'd recommend playing the other games first in order to appreciate the comparisons and contrasts between this entry and the others. A few things to note here: 1. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles consists of two games: "The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures" and "The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve". They should be played in that order, and the story will arrive at a good stopping point whilst being incomplete if you merely play the former and ignore the latter. 2. Both games have a noticable amount of "flashback to previous events" reminders, which can be really annoying or really helpful depending on how often/long your play sessions are and how strong your memory is. 3. The first chapter of "The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures" is quite slower-paced in a bad way compared to everything else. Which is to say, it only gets better from there onwards. 4. For those familiar with Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright is the localised name for Ryuichi Naruhodo. Thus our protagonist in this game, Ryunosuke Naruhodo is a direct ancestor of Phoenix Wright, despite his name not being localised into ___ Wright. I'm aware this also happens for Payne/Auchi, but there might be other characters I'm unaware of. In fact, The Great Ace Attoney Chronicles maintains the localisation quality of the main games while forgoing the pretence of a Japan-America hybrid setting, Given that it's a prequel quite early in the timeline, one can still imagine a world where that amalgamation retains canonicity, or not, based on personal preference. 5. For those familiar with Sherlock Holmes media, any appearances of "Herlock Sholmes", "Wilson", and "Randst" are references to "Sherlock Holmes", "Watson", and "Strand" respectively due to copyright issues. 6. There's an option to turn on alternate costumes when playing "The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve". If you plan to do so, I strongly recommend not doing that for its first chapter, as there's already a new costume there that only appears in that chapter. In conclusion, give this game a go, so that you too, can be "A 'great ace attorney', some might say!"
You get an incomplete picture when you first investigate a case, but you have a general idea of how and what crime was committed. When you step into the courtroom, you assumptions gets shattered one by one as more evidence and testimony comes to light. Even if they are far-reaching at times, within the logic of the game, everything checks out. Then you have the whimsical characters with their funny animations and outbursts that balance out the serious tone of the cases. All the while, you have an overarching plot that slowly develops as more and more cases provide context to it. Oh wait, I was just describing what makes ANY ace attorney game peak. Well, as for this game, it does everything the original series did better. Better graphics, tighter mysteries, more whimsical and memorable characters. I had less moments where I got frustrated because there were already clear inconsistencies I wanted to point out, but couldn't due to the plot line asking for a different one. I also grew up reading Sherlock Holmes and loved every instance of reference to the series. If you can read and you like mysteries, you have to play this. This is not a request, it's a demand.
Excellent Addition but probably the weakest in gameplay. New things are the Jury, and Sholmes inspections. Apollo had more game play and had even more mechanics to gameplay, and is only 10 bucks more. For having 10 chapters, 4 of them are some of the weakest in all the games I've seen. Some don't even have Trials or the Jury, so it kinda just feels like playing a weaker Ace Attorney game with a different coat of paint. Love the story though, and the music in this game is probably more beautiful then the other games, it definitely isn't as bopping as the other games. There's also no new Trial music in the second chapter, which is kinda a staple. Also alot of characters feel reused, and that probably just because they didn't wanna make new characters everytime for the jury. Sholmes is the Goat btw. Not as strong as the other titles, but for a visual novel, still pretty good. But I probably wouldn't buy at full price.
