The Short Version:
Putting its short length aside, The Frost: First Ones packs enough into its narrative to provide a substantially compelling experience, one thats charm is bolstered by its attractive visuals and authentic atmosphere. It is, however, not something I can recommend to absolutely everybody. From a gameplay standpoint, it’s basic, and there are some issues that can, at times, make it feel like a chore to play. Regardless, I liked it, and those looking for a story-driven experience will likely be satisfied with this as well. Thank you!

A Journey of Discovery
The Frost: First Ones is a top-down adventure/walking simulator set in a frozen, post-apocalyptic version of Earth. Humanity has been reduced to nothing more than groups of hunter-gatherers striving to survive the freezing temperatures. You play as Berak, an experienced huntsman living in a small settlement. The story begins when he’s approached by the wife of a fellow hunter, who tells him that her husband, Hendrik, has gone missing after setting out on a hunting trip. With some persuasion, Berak agrees to search the wilds for any traces of where he might have gone. Despite his skills as a tracker, the journey of finding Hendrik is far from an easy task. The world of First Ones is a brutal one. Human life is scarce, and as a result, the majority of the landscape has been covered in thick snow and overgrown with dense foliage. The further he travels away from his home, the more out of depth he finds himself, as his search for the missing hunter takes him to the spirit lands, an uncharted area said to be roamed by ancient spirits. The narrative as a whole is a rather solitary adventure. You’ll occasionally interact with other survivors, and even the odd animal or two, but the majority of time is spent alone, trekking your own path to your destination. The pacing is rather slow at first, but once you reach those unexplored regions, the story begins to open up to and become much more complex than what was previously imposed. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2598091147 If I could describe the writing in one word, I’d choose: compelling. What could just be a simple tale of loyalty and camaraderie is instead broadened to a much larger-scale conflict that could have serious implications. Sad to say however, it might not be for everyone. This is a dialogue-heavy game. Your character will often talk to himself to reflect on his journey and what he must do, and these monologues can stretch a bit. While I found them to be interesting, the abundance of text boxes might be off-putting to some. It’s also worth noting that First Ones is riddled with translation issues. For the most part, it’s manageable, and I was able to enjoy everything the story had to offer, but there were definitely a handful of moments where I had to scratch my head for a little while. This is something that could potentially be fixed in future updates.
Braving the Harsh, Winter Climate...
While translation errors definitely have an impact on immersion, it never took long for me to be brought back into the engagement, and that’s thanks to the game’s incredible atmosphere. Permeating through its excellent audio quality, the sounds of fast-moving winds followed by the rustling of trees and the cracking of ice make the world feel more gritty and realistic. Expanding further on this authenticity is the challenging nature of traversing the levels. Although very much a linear game, the maps themselves are usually wide, containing multiple routes that lead to the same destination. It may be a walking simulator, but it’s far from a straightforward one. Finding paths was a tricky endeavor, but searching for them kept me entertained. The amount of detail that’s placed into these locations is immense, and despite the fact that the world has become a much more hostile and inhospitable place, there’s still a certain beauty to it, whether that’s a result of the herds of animals that pass by on occasion or the presence of some spectacular vistas. All of it is really nice… until it’s not. The level design frequently goes overboard in how much clutter there is. Numerous areas could use with fewer bushes and trees, or even opening up some of the crevices and cliff edges a bit more. I often completely lost track of where my character was since, thanks to the game’s colour scheme, you blend in to the environment pretty easily. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2598088828 Then there are the invisible walls situated in parts of the maps where you wouldn’t expect to encounter them. Issues like these ended up making traversing and exploring feel cumbersome and irritating, to the point where I would sometimes spam the jump button just to push myself up a hill. It doesn’t help that the soundtrack is highly repetitive either, as it ends up making the frustrating moments all the more annoying. Don’t get me wrong, it sounds really good and I liked all of the tunes, but there simply isn’t enough variety in the tracks to keep it refreshing. Some of them don’t quite fit the atmosphere either; one of the last instruments I’d expect to hear in a game like this is an electric guitar, as cool as it may sound. Faulty design choices aside, First Ones is a remarkably well-polished product. Sure, some animations may look a bit wonky here and there, but I didn’t encounter much in the way of bugs. There isn’t much to the gameplay aside from navigating the levels, and while it does attempt to shake things up occasionally - climbing up cliffs, running from a rockfall, avoiding a pack of wolves - the majority of it is simplistic, but in a good way. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2598092735 Taken as a whole, it’s an experience that’s driven mostly by it’s intriguing narrative and worldbuilding. It may be a little hard to understand at times, but overall, it’s gripping and decently written. As a gaming experience, the mechanics are superficial, and while I still enjoyed my time with it, it may not appeal to those looking for more complex gameplay.
Curator page here--> DaRevieweD #128 <-- New review every Weekend

"Frozen: The Game!"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2593842345 Here's The Thing: In a land where the cold and snow are the only climate known to a small village settlement. You are Berak, hunter and concerned mate who volunteers to look for Hendrik, a family man who had gone missing for about a week or so. But it is not uncharacteristic for long hunting periods. Still, the mind races, could something have befallen his friend? He hastily prepares for the trip and sets out to track him down~
[+] PROS;
:) A HUNT PUT ON ICE? The store page description gives away almost all there is in terms of gameplay- but seeing and actually doing are totally worlds apart! As a hunter, you won’t really be hunting much unless you count Hendrick that is. But you will have to employ your self-preservation skills, pick up on tracks and show compassion to mother nature. It’s essentially a snowy nature-walk-sim for the most part and what that means is spooking the heck out of animals and making astute, survival tips-filled observations. But that don’t make the wild any less dangerous and sometimes you will have to think fast whether to fall back or lure a beast out. There are even trial-and-error minigames such as rock climbing, tending to an injured animal’s wounds… With 30+ story-based as well as optional nature discovery achievements and 2-3 hours’ length of gameplay, the price is superbly reasonable! :) SILENT NIGHT… HOWLING NIGHT. With more tracks than a deer on its last legs, the score composed by Anvar Hazgaleev will have you shivering and immersed in this unyielding frost. Seriously, there is close to 20 tracks for a short game and for some reason it chilled me to the bone. Maybe it’s because they sound quasi-spiritual but at the same time laden with electric guitar, which always brings a sparkling crystalized tear to my eye… Or how they make the snow feel more heavier than it is and the protagonist even more downtrodden. And the ambient noise from the howling wind, muffled and at times crunchy footsteps seem to almost be inseparable with the OST. Most of all, the animal sounds which had me panting fog breath because that for me really sold the grueling, harsh living condition. The voice acting is minimal and confined to rare moments that speak from the heart~ :) DON’T JUST WOLF IT DOWN! Think of the game’s stunning sights as your food reserves in the winter. You have to make it last- so you wade through snow, grabbing cautious bites of ecological beauty that is the crisscross of animals and plants that lie dormant in out-of-the-way corners. Yes, it's heavily snowed in when it comes to aesthetics but the tweaking of weather and particles make all the difference, I never got bored of the white powder. It even had me a little blue that on the one hand, it’s a pixelated blizzard-covered paradise with flecks of light the size of a Christmas movie backdrop or Frozen (2013). But on the other, a potentially death-ridden trap that gives you the chills or icy stares that fits more of a horror-thriller because of how merciless it could get, hypothetically- think Frozen (2010). Luckily, the former outcompetes the latter and you will emerge out of the cold with a newfound or enhanced sense of respect towards nature. Like a fur coat, or hunkering down to avoid a frigid demise. Discovery Channel who right~ https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2593834321 :) SHAMAN YOU! ON ALL OF YOU~ A tale of friendship, survival, adaptation and gritty harsh circumstances. That’s what it set out as, but you’ll be shocked by what it evolves to- or would you, since it’s in the title, logo and store description. If I had to say, it’s almost as if Firewatch and Brother Bear banded forces to hunt and the result is absolutely cozy. I also was touched by a wider green moral and message on unsustainability… that’s more on the background and not preachy. Which will work great for endorsing a SDG campaign! I definitely feel more appreciative and want to do more for the environment. The story goes from simply physically getting by to a mystical air and then to technological ravings. It was frankly a little unsettling, what with its universe being sort of a biblical disaster that’s headed for unhospitable realities unless mankind changes their ways. Seriously UN, here’s a profound takeaway and all for 3 bucks~
[-] CONS;
:( WHY SO COLD~ You know what they say beauty is only skin-deep, and it couldn’t be truer in this case. It certainly took a while too for me to shut the gap in my mouth and think clearly. Simply put, FRO gets caught up in itself- as did I in the impossible environment to navigate. The fact that Berak can’t run on account of all the padding he wears for warmth or his jumps seemingly weigh a blockade of ice is trying but I can get used to that. But it doesn’t change how it is rather easy to get stuck in between the uneven ground and foliage. And the way invisible walls manifest gave me goosebumps. They can either, firstly, be placed almost prematurely to inhibit your sense of wonder because just when you think the exploration goes for miles seeing as you can make out the path- it just ends. Secondly, the walls work on a formula that when you progress to a checkpoint, the path and possibly even achievements just right behind you will be barred abruptly… Throw in an unnecessary chase sequence that clumps all those annoyances together and you have a recipe for extinction~
BUGS:
x In one chase sequence, Berak will teleport from where he’s spotted and closer to the predator. x Partner AI malfunctions and heads in the direction of where you’re going towards- a dead end. x Partner AI frequently stops to make sure you keep up, sometimes blocking you in narrow paths. x Previous bug (has since been fixed) where the next level failed to load properly.
NITPICKS:
~ Font size and style are a bit strange. With objects on the edge of the map, the text will get cut off. ~ There should be subtitles for the few voiced lines because they are faint and blend too well with the Master volume. ~ The English needs a tremendous amount of work. Incorrect articles, misspellings, possessives and grammar. But at time of writing, the dev has vowed to improve it. ~ Level select feature? For completionists and also me- since I missed out on just ONE achievement.
"And Not Much ELSA- But Stay Frosty~"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2593837090 Last Words? FRO is super cool, no really! Aesthetically and musically miraculous… For $3, you get a three-hour snow trek, wildlife sights, calls and a greater appreciation towards nature. Story gets chilling too~ Want a snappy adventure game that will make your jaw drop because the price is so uncannily worth it? Not to mention it has some striking winter wonderland-esque visuals and a stone-cold magical soundtrack! Even if you consider yourself an indoor person- that will change after you see what bountiful nature has in store. Seriously, if it were a fire, you’d hold your hands out and warm up right to it out of necessity sure but also the snug sensation~
4.5 / 5

Spasibo to Ivan Sukhanov for being such a chill dude and also for the key

Don't forget to follow my curator DaRevieweD for more games!!

The Frosts: First Ones – Winterspaziergang mit pixeliger Aussicht

Doch seien wir ehrlich: Was will man schon groß in einer verschneiten Landschaft erwarten?

Gameplay: Gehen, Staunen, Denken

Pro:

🌨️ Tolle, atmosphärische Winterwelt
🎧 Passender, stimmungsvoller Soundtrack
💸 Sehr günstiger Preis

Contra:

📜 Englische Texte mit kleineren Fehlern
🗺️ Gelegentlich verwirrender Levelaufbau
🌍 Begrenzte Entscheidungsfreiheit

Fazit: Minimalistisch, aber stimmungsvoll
The Frosts: First Ones ist kein Spiel für jedermann.

You can finish The Frosts in under 2 hours. You play as Berak in search of your hunter friend. You click and walk your way through the dialogue and the winter forest. Sadly the dialogue seems forced and the story contradicts itself pretty often. Berak mentions he has supplies for only 5 days, which means he has to find his friend in the next 2 days before heading back to his village. But instead of following his trail Berak stays one whole day contemplating how to climb that rock (he does nothing special btw, he just climbs it) and another day nursing a deer back to health. Both the climbing and the care for the deer is done by clicking numbered hands on the screen with no indication on which number ist the right, you just have to know or try. Then you have collect 25 wood twice by looking around and searching for the white hands on the screen ... in the white snow. While you're moving like a damaged tank. The story also lacks any kind of interesting features, it just gets confusing and boring throughout. I am a bit disappointed. It builds a mystery with no real explanation and just throws in dinosaus at one point (you will be chased by one for solid 5 minutes with the horrible moving speed). At the end you get some explanations but they're confusing and so dragged out I had to force myself to stay awake.
Trop wiedzie do tajemniczych Ziemi Duchów.
Полное прохождение: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXEKG2lhhaM The Frosts: First Ones - приключенческая игра в холодном снежном антураже.
Bleh, no. There is next to nothing that was well done with this game and i am sad to say that i was not able to enjoy playing it at all. This is what i absolutely hated in my time with "the frosts: first ones" - the graphics are meh. all environments are bland and boring, white or blue over white or blue. a handful of animals in an attempt to make it more interesting and alive. the character models all look the same, like ugly little fall guys knockoff characters - controlls are meh. you can choose between keyboard and mouse for controls. both work to a degree but jumping is not well done and feels extremely laggy. in addition, the character will get stuck EVERYWHERE. that is not a huge problem normally but here you have a sequence where you have to flee and you'll get stuck on rocks, plants, invisible walls, other characters, everything - the dialogue is brainless and boring. it is often used to describe feeling and actions but in such an emotionless way that it doesn't add anything of value to the game. the dialogue window is just bad, it keeps jumping over the screen and you have to click on "next" for the text to change, which makes the whole thing a constant tracking mission. it can also happen that the dialogue windows appear completely off screen (if you don't know that someone is about to talk and you have already walked away a bit). very annoying. even worse: your character stops walking when he starts to talk which is very frustrating because he will still move a few centimeters to each side but then just stop - the gameplay is bland, boring and frustrating: you walk, read, try to get through dialogue, walk through a boring landscape, try to find whatever the game wants to to find (with a white indicator on mostly white screen, wow!), do some increadibly stupid clicking tasks where you are given no indication which option is the correct one, resulting in a trial-and-error kinda situation where you are desperately trying to keep track on the "correct" order. this all would not have been too bad if the story was at least interesting. but it is not. it starts out very boring - a hunter trying to find his lost friend - then we are given a lead very quickly, stumble about until the story takes a quick turn and ends in a very absurd way. Never was there really any tension or mystery. I got this game on sale for a bit more than 1 euro, spent 1 1/2 hours making my way through the story and can only recommend you don't try this for yourself. save your time and money for a game that is worth it.
In The Frosts: First Ones, we need to find our friend and experienced hunter Hendrick. The game itself is very beautiful and atmospheric. The musical accompaniment here is wonderful. The plot here is interesting, even there are puzzles. I can definitely say that the game should cost more than it is. I recommend it!
Frosts is a short, narrative experience. For the price, it is certainly "worth", but it's hard for me to give a true recommendation as I feel the entire 'game' is a bit forgettable. Even though the game is linear, there is no clear direction and the little interface is hard to see due to everything being the same color. The biggest issue for me, by far, is that the English translation is abysmal, laughably so. Considering this is a story-based game, this is a serious detriment because the poor English writing makes it difficult to understand what is trying to be conveyed. The story doesn't really deliver overall so it's a game that left me feeling, "well, that was a game, I guess". I do wonder if the developer intends to release more games in this universe to build on the lore. There seems to be a decent basis to build from, so it's too bad that everything is so obscured in the First One.
