The Forest Cathedral

Game is weird and I'm curious as to where it goes. That said it crashed on me twice for no reason as far as I can tell and I just can't be bothered to keep trying right now. Maybe I'll edit this review if I decide to give it a go again.

game is cool. visually very pretty. cool mechanic. good length where the game ends before the gimmick gets annoying. everything in the game could have been done a little better, but what's there is interesting and fun.

I started out playing an adventure game with a specific story and ended up playing super mario (80's). This is actually the most challenging part of the game and bears no connection whatsoever to the plot, which is about uncovering the truth about the dangerous effects of a pesticide to be commercialized. I think the addition of the super mario part was forced and stands out as irrelevant to the story.

Kurzweiliges Spiel mit (eigentlich) interessanter Storyline, meiner Meinung nach aber etwas irreführend, weil ich zuerst auf etwas "Übernatürliches" oder zumindest etwas Horror eingestellt war - die Story ist definitiv ausbaufähig und könnte besser mit den Mini Games zusammengebracht werden. Es gibt einige interessante Punkte, wo ich noch gerne mehr erfahren hätte. Diese gingen aber irgendwie total im restlichen Setting unter oder wurden nicht einmal ansatzweise besprochen (Spoiler: Der Körper im Wasser??? Was war das?). Sehr gefallen hat mir das Erkunden der Umgebung, hier hätte ich mir noch mehr Möglichkeiten gewünscht. Die Grafik war sehr schön und mir gefällt auch der Mix der verschiedenen Stile (Pixelart, 3d, 2d). Sound/Musik ist für mich etwas wild gemischt, hier fehlt mir das Feingefühl. Am schwierigsten für mich waren die Mini Games, die im Grunde ein 2d Platformer sind (ich bin kein Platformer Fan und kann das auch nicht so gut). Leider ist die Steuerung extrem wonky (ich habe mit Maus und Tastatur gespielt) sodass ich einige Male kurz vor alt+f4 war (meine Frusttoleranz ist auch sehr gering). Die kurzen Dialoge bringen die Story eigentlich nicht weiter und machen wenig Sinn, da sie nicht wirklich aufeinander aufbauen und eher an Gesprächsfetzen/unvollendeten Gesprächen erinnern. Alleinstehend und zum Vollpreis würde ich es nicht empfehlen, im Sale oder zusammen mit einem Bundle ist es aber für ca. 1,5h ganz okay. Ich habe es in einem cozy humble bundle mitgekauft - warum es als cozy vermarktet/verkauft wird, bleibt mir dennoch ein Rätsel. Fazit: Ich habe mir mehr Storytelling und tiefsinnigere Dialoge erhofft. Wer ein kurzes und oberflächliches Spiel für den Zeitvertreib sucht, wird glücklich werden.

I completed the game in little over an hour. I liked the general idea of the story and it had nice moments. The gameplay is very disjointed and shirtlived, most of the action is 2d platforming that is more frustrating than satisfying. The platforming also doesn't really fit in with the rest of the game. The story is okay and there are very subtle creepy vibes. I don't think the game is worth the price.

The Forest Cathedral is a strange game. Do not look for nuanced gameplay or an interesting narrative here. It's a walking sim merged with some 2D platforming sections, and it tells the real story of an environmentalist as she tries to uncover the effects of a pesticide. The game is more like a school project and can be completed within an hour and I don't think it justifies its pricetag. The story is sadly presented in a very amateur fashion, it's so surreal, that it feels like watching an art house movie at certain points, yet the dialogue seems to be written for very small children and lacks any kind of seriousness or believably. The main character calls items she encounters Mr Chair, and Mr Eagle, for absolutely no reason. The game looks ugly, the models and textures are underdeveloped and the gameplay is very basic. The platforming sections have no tangible connection to the rest of the game or story and I have no idea why a researcher is interacting with a 2D game constantly. Maybe this is some metaphor of the shortsighted nature of humans, but it just isn't explained properly and its use doesn't make much sense. All it does is break up the walking sections. I am struggling to recommend this, because I like games that at least try to tackle real world, historical events and I understand the challenge of gamifying a documentary and writing a series of events into a story. But the game barely works and feels more like random elements mashed together. If this were free, I would recommend it, unfortunately, it's not worth anywhere near 13 euros.

You had no business making me cry like that. Lol Not a game i recommend playing unless youre like a teacher or scientist. Not very much to do in terms of playing. Mostly must story.

Предположительно, подобная проблема наблюдается не только у меня, так как обзоров на игру довольно мало. С другой стороны, далеко не все имеющиеся обзоры положительные, так что, возможно, святой Габен уберёг меня от прохождения и легко принял возврат средств. И всё же надеюсь, что когда-нибудь смогу войти в лесной собор, чтобы вкусить тот необычный опыт, который подготовил для нас автор. А пока с сожалением направляю палец вниз (только для предупреждения потенциальных покупателей).

This game convinced me to be interested in environmental concerns, especially damage caused by DDT, and the broader environmentalism movement. It was somewhat interesting to see a video game inspired by Carson and Silent Spring. The puzzles are fun, and the music is n ice.
