Cute art style. Nice little story. The game doesn't really have much to it, but it's sweet and quick and touching. If it's on sale, I'd say definitely give it a go.
I never expected it to be such an emotional experience. Short, cosy, and packs a punch. The end is beautiful and had me crying floods of tears.
Played all the way through and really loved the writing and the art style. A wonderful little game with a lot of heart and feelings <3
I had the opportunity to play this game with my Twitch community, and talk about some important subjects, such as grief, loss, acceptance, and the importance of helping others. This is a beautifully designed game, with very easy controls, excellent art design, and THE BESTEST BOI. You can play this in a single night, but you will need to make sure that you're emotionally prepared for it.
A beautiful little game about grief, simple gameplay and a story packed with heart. Well worth experiencing. I am in tears, thank you Studio Witchstar <3
This game is short and sweet. It explores beautiful themes of loss, grief, and acceptance of death from a few perspectives. I was curious what the negative review was, and it was about LGBT themes, describing this game as themed around that and asking for a warning about it. There's two queer people in one portion of this game. It's not an insignificant piece, but it certainly isn't the whole game, and I think saying a game needs a warning for two people living and loving differently is crazy, especially when we all experience death. Given the game's theme, the story also isn't about queerness. My one gripe is that the veil can be a little difficult to navigate and come in very fast, and the help isn't necessarily ... helpful. That being said, the gameplay really doesn't feel like the focus of this game -- it's a short (sub-one-hour) experience about coping with loss with great writing and a sweet message. In that short time, it may just make you cry.
Polished Story Telling
Usually when I start up a game that right away looks like it was built in a basic game engine, my heart sinks. And then lifts, because Witchstar have built an excellent and credible story game. The basic dialog driven script builds out and weaves "choices" in that change how quickly you progress into the puzzle in such a way that you really do have to pay attention to every detail. You must often memorise the purpose of each piece, and then try again. The game is sensitive to each failure, and your progress, the map random enough to make it slightly interesting, yet not complicated to solve.
Target Audience
A pretty deep story told in grown up language, but spoken as a child makes the story credible and interesting to young and old alike.
Long
There are a few people you must help, before they can all together help you find you own final good bye. So this does make the gameplay a tad longer than I expected. The game mechanics are good but never easy, at least one level had me run out of 'soul' and had to start over. It's a fun game in that you really do have to play tactically and use your noggin. There is a load of dialog, which you may find hard work to click through, some parts of it are important though, so be prepared to take in the little short-story. Furthermore since the map is not small, there is quite a lot of walking to find the reminder items on each level again. The game does lack polish, for example sound effect immersion, and I guess the game engine is a bit too basic to allow a much slicker look or more resources. Does require a fair bit of patience though.
Works surprisingly great on Steam Deck, but it drained the battery much more than expected (which makes a lot of sense because the game is NOT optimized for the Deck, I just tried it and it simply worked, I'm sure that if the devs worked on that a bit it would be a 10/10 portable experience but anyway, the point is that it works, found no bugs at all nor any other kind of errors). The Final Farewell is a short (30mins to an hour) but impactful experience about love, loss and letting go. The heart melting art direction helps delivers some hard hitting subjects with lightness and to keep in focus the important topics when brought up. These people have already passed, and it's in our hands to deal with that and the aftermath. I do have to mention that the base price might be a little steep for the amount of content, but do consider supporting the devs and helping a cute dog when a discount comes. So sweet, so cute, so SAD! What a lovely wee game! Music wonderful, gorgeous art, amazing story!
The Final Farewell checked off a lot of boxes for me from the description alone: a cozy narrative game about grief and death, beautiful art style and coloring, and a lovely soundtrack. What I appreciated most about this game is how simple everything was -- from the character designs to the gameplay itself -- and still managed to hit me with a powerful message about moving on from difficult and painful memories and how that ties into grief. I was kindly gifted the game to play on stream for this year's Queer Indie Games Showcase and was pleasantly surprised to see how seamlessly queer relationships, identities, and people were integrated into the story. And it was done in very overt ways, but also in beautifully subtle ways. I thorougly enjoyed this game and managed to finish it within a couple of hours. If you're looking for an equally heartwarming and heartbreaking cozy game, this is definitely one to add to your list.
