Awaking in a dimly lit forest, you meet other characters who are lost, trying to remember who they are looking for. You must help them find their mementos to trigger their memories to help them say goodbye to their loved ones. Their relationships with the deceased are all varying, ranging from an elderly grandfather, a best friend and an ex-partner. Although in its short playtime, no serious relationship building can be constructed, the developers do a good job with the short time they had, helping to build the emotional connection. [h1]Gameplay[/h1] You search the forest for lost mementos, needing at least two of them to successfully trigger the memory. The forest changes slightly each time you enter it, and the longer you stay in it, a dark veil starts to surround you and will drain your spirit. Your spirit can be refreshed at nearby campfires, or once you have completed a chapter, you will gain an optional guide that can help you navigate the veil through different means and advantages. Most help prolong your time in the veil. Once you have collected the trinkets/mementos, you will need to select the right option that describes the connection that person has to it. If you get this wrong twice, you will automatically be sent back to the beginning shrine and have to start again. The trinkets and answers do not change so it is very easy to guess the correct option if you fail it only once. [h1]Visuals & Sound[/h1] The Final Farewell’s cute, bubbly art-style is juxtaposed by its narrative’s themes of grief and loss. In [i]The Final Farewell[/i] you play as a lonely ghost who helps mortals who enter the Whispering Woods to recall their memories and lay their loved ones to rest. [h3]The Story[/h3] Mortals enter the Whispering Woods to lay their loved ones to rest. But within the woods lies the Veil. The mist of the Veil wipes away memories. As a ghost you help the mortals remember and help them lay their loved ones to rest by finding their missing trinkets. Stay close to the light of campfires to keep the mist away and beware of spending too much time away from the light and getting swallowed up in the Veil yourself. [h3]Gameplay & Tips[/h3] * While searching for trinkets, if you do run out of time you will start back at the shrine and have to re-collect any trinkets you have found. * The map layout changes each time you play it. So if you re-spawn after running out of health the trinkets do not spawn in the same spot as previous. * Campfires restore some of your “health” but only partially. Don’t go to the campfires until you get really low to preserve them until the last minute. * The game is played with keyboard and mouse (not controller supported) and the keys are not able to be remapped but are a simple layout. * After helping each mortal they grant you a buff but only one buff can be active at a time. I found the ghost that gives you the extra light the most useful. [h3]Overall Experience[/h3] I would recommend this one on sale due to the length and wish it had achievements. The game runs about an hour or less (my time is inflated due to leaving it open). The hand-drawn art is painted in a watercolour style and is vibrant and beautiful and the ghost is adorable. The individual stories are very touching and some trigger warnings are warranted as some of the stories deal with death, grief and implied suicide (not in a graphic way but through text). I was lucky enough to play this before release and all I have to say is: I ended the stream in tears! It's such a meaningful, emotional and raw experience. It is a short experience, about 2 hours if you're the exploring type, but well worth the money. The art is beautiful, the soundtrack is soothing and the story will bring you to tears (in a good way!). I was lucky enough to win a competition on Studio Witchstar's instagram to get a free copy of this game, but it's so sweet I think I'll have to buy it anyway. The big things that hit first with The Final Farewell are the absolutely delightful art, and sound. Seriously- the combination of the art (which reminds me of something hand drawn, cut out, layered with love) with this hopeful but kind of melancholy music, birdsong that really transports you into the game, it's just amazing. The core mechanic is simple enough, travel through the shrine and find someone who can't quite remember who they're looking for in this misty forest. Avoid the mist, find the trinkets to remind them of who they're looking for, and help them say their final farewell. Meanwhile, as the player ghostie, you can't remember how you became a ghost- but as you help others, they'll help you too. It's heartwarming, bittersweet, and I played through my first run (after getting to check out a demo at an event, so I was already fairly familiar with the controls and layout) in just under an hour. I'll definitely be replaying it too, even though it's a fairly sad game ([spoiler] Biscuit, pup, I love you[/spoiler]), I'm excited to see the narrative from a different perspective. The mechanic of the companion ghosts is really novel to me, and I like it a lot- They each provide a different sort of help to you as you look for the trinkets, and they have so much personality; especially considering you can play through to the end in around an hour. Con? You can't pet the dog :'( (I'll forgive yous)

This is a short game, but there is a lot of passion in it. You meet interesting characters, emotional dialogue, the environment is nice. I recommend this game. The final character you interact with made me cry when you piece things together.
The Final Farewell is a short yet very moving and easy game to play through. I'm not sure how, because I finished it in less than an hour, but it made me tear up twice. Be forewarned that it does have some heavy themes, such as self-unaliving. A nice and quick game that is thought-provoking and very tastefully done, such as the elements featuring LGBTQ+ community. The art style is cute and there's not much to grasp in the game-play mechanics. Just go into it with an open heart and be ready for a heart-touching journey!
