Death is searching for a successor.
Behind a quiet desk at the edge of eternity, you are subjected to a strange and unsettling interview to determine whether you are worthy of inheriting the Ferryman’s mantle.
But while you judge the dead, something else is judging you.

Every choice matters.
The Ferryman’s Trial is a short narrative experience designed to be completed in a single sitting, where your decisions shape humanity’s future, alter the fate of countless souls, and lead to multiple endings.

The game immediately resonated with me because it's a tribute from one of the developers to a beloved family member who has passed away. Knowing that gave the experience much more emotional weight and made me want to make the best possible decisions in every situation. The visual style is outstanding. The dithering effect combined with the color palette looks gorgeous, and everything feels incredibly polished, just like in Viridino's previous games. The soundtrack is also excellent, creating a dark, tense atmosphere that perfectly complements the experience. I think adding support for more languages in a future update would be a great improvement. Even though I have a decent understanding of English, I still had to look up a few words and expressions, which took me out of the immersion at times. One last suggestion would be to add a button to return to the main menu. I had to close and reopen the game just to read the opening text again.
This is my favorite type of narrative game, where the tension comes from people rather than action. People's secrets unfold at a nice pace and there's always another question waiting around the corner. A couple of "twists" definitely caught me off guard.
I picked this up because the premise sounded interesting, but I ended up staying for the characters. Almost everyone in the cast feels like they're carrying some kind of burden, and learning who they really are becomes just as important as seeing whether or not you will get one of the "good" endings. The writing does a nice job of making people feel ambiguous without pretending they're innocent. The atmosphere deserves special mention. There are plenty of scenarios where not much is happening on the surface, yet the game still manages to create tension through dialogue alone. The minimalist soundtrack helps a lot with that. A few characters took longer to understand, but overall I was engaged from beginning to end. If you enjoy story-focused games where difficult choices matter and nobody has easy answers, this is worth checking out, especially for such a cheap price.
A short narrative game with a somber atmosphere alongside an interesting concept and story. Short, yes, however the writing and atmosphere hit just the right notes to leave you wondering if you're truly judging these lost souls or if you are the one being judged yourself, or perhaps judging yourself more than anything else. If you allow yourself to be immersed it is a truly remarkable experience. The people you meet and judge as a Ferryman are portrayed with honest words, they lie, sure, however what they don't say reveals just as much. They might lie to themselves even, but still it is you who needs to decide their fate. For me some situations for me had a clear "right" choice however I can see someone else coming to a completely different conclusion based on their own values and makes me wonder if i'm the one being judged being as I sit reading the pleas of these lost souls while listening to the soundtrack and ambient noise. This game will remain in my thoughts for quite a while.
The strongest part of the game is definitely the ambiguity. The characters feel flawed in believable ways, and several conversations had me changing my opinion of people multiple times. If you enjoy dialogue-heavy stories with moral dilemmas, you'll probably have a short but good time here.
Not usually a VN player tbh, but this surprised me. Finished it in under 30 minutes and kind of wished there was more.
I liked that the choices weren't just obvious good-or-bad decisions. More than once I picked an option/asnwer that seemed useful and regretted it later. The game does a good job of making everyone feel morally gray without turning them into caricatures.
One of the few VN I've played, and I liked it. The game constantly reminds you of the weight of your task, not only through its storytelling, but also through the user interface, music, and sound effects. Everything carries a somber tone.
Although it's simple, the game introduces 10 interesting, different and morally gray characters. The burden of the choices felt kinda real because of the write's quality. The art style and music are also a 10/10 to me!
The atmosphere is excellent. The music, the storm in the background, and the overall tone work together really well to create a constant sense of unease. I think the last couple of characters are a bit too cryptic, but nothing that made me lose interest in seeing which ending I would get.
