A bit mixed, but overall a definite recommend. First, it's got one of if not the best combat system in a metroidvania I've played (and I've played a few dozen now). However, the enemy design is not so perfect, so while you can have some amazing moments in it, you'll also have some frankly not great moments in it too. As a result, gameplay is it's strong point, with some amazing highs, but also some mediocre periods and one outright negative boss. Length, it's kinda short, not too long though not too short either I'd say. However it does definintely kinda rely on you challenging the bosses memories to replay them (and possibly on hard difficulty) to help pad things out a bit. If you don't, you should still beat it on normal just fine and frankly within eight hours probably if not trying to 100% things. I did find myself doing the memories, from level 1 to 9 each time getting a bit harder. There are nice rewards from them, but the gameplay is at least for a few of them the core reason, as some of these fights are quite good to learn and get the dance down. When the enemy has enough health, and deals enough damage you have to learn it, rather than just facemashing through it with a bit of basic skill, it can be nice as that's often one of the issues I have in other games, a boss was too easy and I never even learned all their moves fully... If you want to do a lvl 9 here, that probably wont be the case... The first two memory bosses are mostly good to great, the third is... a gimick of sorts that makes it the worst of them, and the fourth is alright, but not great or anything. Only the final boss in each location has this re fighting feature by the way, there's a few other bosses beyond them of coarse, including the games final boss situation. Story, this is the part a lot of people might just quit the game on startup from. The opening cinematic is bad, questionable voices, horrible lighting and glare and focus, feels really ameteur hour, and unclear. The starting cutscenes have shoddy voices and active with iffy animations and timings... felt pretty bad, I can see some people dropping this game after that intro in the first few minutes thinking it's just cheap and not good. Push through the tutorial! It gets better and is worth it! Story wise, cinematic moments and most dialogue moments are just kinda bad throughout the game, but you'll still learn the story ok for the most part. The story itself is ok, not great, not bad. And while the writing on some characters feels off or stiff or forced, or just poorly timed voices (maybe tranlsation timing issues for stuff sometimes), at least I found the more regular chats with your personal demon rather nice. Some good banter and character there that feels fairly like real people and was actually quite good at times. Art. Ok, not great... 3d style some people dont like. It's not super generic, but not super standout either. Decently unique art assets, locations, for the most part it works just fine for the game and doesn't feel bad, but nothing stands out as wow. Music is ok, not really standout either. Sound and audio is often decently well done though. The biggest issue here is the visual noise in some fights. When there's 3 lightning pillars, a boss that throws a big lightning attack in addition, and you had remnants from a counter move on screen.. you can literally not even see your own character or the enemy boss sometimes. This was a reacurring issue I found on many bosses, where the core fight is super tight and awesome, yet sometimes you just can't see do to excess visual clutter, and the 3d world meaning attacks/moves/enemies can completely block or cover your own character. The second from final boss of the game does this a LOT, and was the only fight I outright disliked, because it does this to an insane amount I have to question majorly what happened in that bosses development/testing. For the others, it's an annoyance sometimes, but not ruinous or anything, but with that second last boss, it frankly kinda is. Many small issues or oddities that just lack polish, like monster box enemies spawning instantly (even the spiky ones or ones that can attack near instantly meaning you take damage right as they appear, with no warning where they would appear beforehand), and other odd issues. A few cases of collisions, a few minor bugs, a few rare inputs issues, and some problems with a few boss designs that might leave spots you can't 100% no hit through with skill alone (without in one case making the fight take probably 20+ minutes at least). Honestly think more polish on this game could have made it be one of the greats, but as it is, it definintely is rather rough in many areas. Still, the core of it's combat system is amazing, and when it was executed and works well it's some of the best out there. So I do recommend it to people who like good combat, and challenging bosses. There are difficulty options if you don't want that, but honestly without the combat, the games a bit... meh... I will be, if nothing else, looking forward to any new games made by these devs, and possibly an future big updates for this game should they pop up.
The Devil Within: Satgat is a 2d platformer/metroidvania about a dude dealing with a parasite infestation. Beat it and 100%ed achievements in 16 hours. Difficulty can be set in game; for the most part I played on Easy. Gameplay - You slash a sword and shoot a gun. You find upgrades to get to places you couldn't before. Yup, it's like a Metroidvania. Had no problems with controls, and enjoyed the gameplay. It's really addictive. Story - Entertaining. You fight demons while talking to the voice in your head during breaks. Atmosphere - There's an apocalyptic vibe of Satgat with both futurist and past elements involved. It gave me this Shinobi-meets-ResidentEvil vibe that I really liked. Cutscenes/dubbing - Cutscenes had a weird flicker/stutter to them that was really distracting, and I'm wondering if watching it in window mode might help (never tested it). Some voice cast members took freaking forever to grate their lines out. Other voices sounded robotic in general, like they weren't paid enough. I swore for a second they used AI to voice it, but there's an actual cast of people involved. Satgat and his imaginary friend had a good voice/whisper overall, though, so it was passable at best, damaging to the enjoyment of the game at worst. You can skip ahead lines with a button click. Lore - Through the game are hidden bites of lore. Reading about what happened and immersing in the world brought a level of fullness to The Devil Within that was nice. Wish the lore was listed newest-at-the-top because if you don't hit Select fast enough you have to scroll all the way down to the bottom every time. Music - I liked part of the soundtrack, but some of it didn't feel like it fit and other parts were loud over cutscenes. It appears Musai was used for a chunk of it (as listed in the final credits). And if that's the Musai I think it is, that means AI was used on some of the music. So I wont be supporting the OST. Do I recommend The Devil Within: Satgat? Gotta admit that I went into this expecting a terrible game based on some of the negative reviews. Yet outside of maybe the English dubbing lacking a bit, there was nothing 'clunky' in the controls and everything played pretty smoothly. Addictively, even. If you like Metroidvanias, you have nothing to lose here. It's a full game with sword-swinging, monster-killing mayhem. You level up, you find new abilities, you search the map for everything. Or you don't and whip through things quicker. This is a great Metroidvania to jog through on a weekend. :D
Very good. Beware, though: it's not a metroidvania. It's a 2.5D Souls-like where you sometimes get traversal upgrades.
