Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my gameplay & early impressions here: https://youtu.be/79dp8No84VU I nearly had several heart attacks while playing this game. Yes, there are jump scares, but they are well-earned jump scares. This game builds up the tension through pacing and a wonderful sound mix that'll have you hearing all kinds of things that go bump in the night. The game also uses excellent lighting that'll have you on edge as your flashlight flickers at the most inopportune time. Keep in mind, this is a horror walking simulator. So, while there are some basic puzzle gameplay elements, the real game is just the terrifying experience you're going through as you investigate the mine. The gameplay mostly consists of looking for objects or reading notes that were left behind (or listenining to the audio). Game is running on the Unreal Engine 4. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 fps. You have full locomotion and teleportation, along with smooth and snap rotation. You can play comfortably seated or standing. You have magnet hands, button crouch, and jumping. This game does use VRGK (Virtual Reality Game Kit), but it's at a minimum. Rather than a game tacked on to the kit, it's a horror experience that just happens to use VRGK. Overall, this is one of the best horror experiences I have had in VR. Quite frankly, I rarely get scared, but this game had my heart pounding. Rate 8/10.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. Some good jump scares and it seems pretty decent but I'm not a fan of the AI generated voice for reading texts and messages. Check out my VR Gameplay video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0cAn0pF9b0
Works on Reverb G2. Disclaimer: I've received this game for free via Curator Connect. THE DESCENT VR is a short indie horror walking sim. It looks and sounds great, while horror parts are really effective, but a bit too reliant on jumpscares. The game is structured similar to others of this genre - it is a linear exploration of spooky environments in search of key items, interrupted by scripted scary encounters. The latter happens just a little too often for my taste: a lot of those jumpscares are very similar in setup and execution, but they are still effective thanks to superb sound design and added immersion of VR. Impressive visuals also help in selling horror atmosphere. Static and dynamic lighting are both great, and environments are well designed to showcase it. Human models and animations are a bit scuffed, but they usually only appear for a short moment of jumpscare, so the player won't have the time to focus on it. The main downside of the game is its story - it is entirely cliched and unmemorable. And the culmination is abrupt and plain silly.
The Descent VR is one of my favourite VR games. It has great graphics, sound and intensive atmosphere. During exploration of the mines sounds causing player disoriented and nervous. Its always very dark and you can only use led stick or flashlight against that. You are gathering evidences like photographs and texts altogether with making photos yourself with video camera but always in atmosphere of fear and imagining what will wait for you behind next corner. It's more walking simulator then typical video game but the time spent with it remind me of watching horror movies as teenager and that's what The Descent is for me: opportunity to find myself in one of this creepy movies. I liked the ending also. The length of this journey is about 3 hours in first playthrough, you can spend additional 3 collecting all achievements (it was a bit challenge in regard to collecting photos). I guess it was made by small team without huge funds so I wish they will continue their work and be successful in future to make more great VR titles. I definitely recommend this game for VR enthusiasts.
A good horror game made me jump quite a few times. I you like story driven horror games would recommend it. Fair price for the game.
You created a really cool game. Totally enjoyed the experience. Graphics are really good.scares got me good at times.
Be aware. This developer has a cheaper bundle of three of there games and one DLC. If you buy any of there games separately you are locked out of purchasing that bundle an getting the discount. I purchased Sinister Halloween and later in the year noticed there VR bundle. Couldn't buy the bundle. So price was 50% more if I wanted to buy the same items. This is anti-consumer practice. In the end. I purchased the bundle on another account. With the caveat the if the games aren't as good as promised that I can always refund. Out of the three games in the bundle this was by far the best. Partially due to how bad the other two are. This had the atmosphere correct but the VR mechanics where a little to unpolished. Using items was janky. Arms moved unrealistically. Arms would stretch to twice there length when pulling a door etc. The game practically shows you what to do (blue holographic images of the item to use next to the location) but figuring out what to do was sometimes a challenge. Also, load screens in A VR experience is a big no-no.
