The Dark Egg Demo

The Dark Egg had the potential to be a game I would really enjoy. I like narrative games and RPGs, I do not mind reading a lot of text and immersing myself into a surreal world. However, this demo has not left me with a lot of desire to play the full game for a number of reasons. First of all, graphically, the design is quite a challenge to enjoy. I do not mind pixel graphics and e.g. Roadwarden has shown that a narrative pixel art game can be beautiful and excellent in many ways. The Dark Egg, however, is mostly gray and boring to look at. The atmosphere conveyed in the text is betrayed by the simplistic graphics, which makes the former harder to enjoy. Both combat and dialogue mechanics are fine, but feel a bit lacking. I cannot really describe it other than I did not have any problem with either, but also never felt like they particularly improved the gameplay. Another problem, for me at least, was that I seemingly lost track of the story and what I was supposed to do after an hour or so. Yeah, sure, get the Dark Egg. But the game has so much more stuff to offer, but there is little that helps you keep track of what you can do, what you have done already or where progress could still be made. Instead, after picking up a new item, you could theoretically backtrack to several locations and see if there is something new to be done, but that's not really enticing enough for me. The aforementioned Roadwarden always gave you a quest of direction to follow up, multiple of those in fact, and where to pick up where you left off. As far as I can see, The Dark Egg leaves you alone in the gray world, either to get lost or make progress based on your ability to memorize or note down what to do. Maybe if I was in a more exploratory mood, I could enjoy this, but presently I just lost interest after a white light took my character and the game just ended. I will give it a thumbs down, because I do not feel like I got enjoyment out of the 2 hours I played, but I will say that I would recommend anyone interested to still give the demo a try. It is a demo (and thus free), after all, and your enjoyment may exceed mine a lot.

I LOVE what the team has done so far and i'm so excited to see whats to come! Its so charming and the mechanics are AMAZING!! The puzzles are cool and the story is compelling! It really reminds me of DND and the layout is very easy to grasp! Great work guys!!

the best free game ever.

I don't know if I already wrote a review for this, but damn me if I didn't. This demo alone is enough to really bring me a horror experience that I had never experienced before. Screw jumpscares, the atmosphere is dark, uncomfortable and down right spine tingling. The psychological horror is fantastic, the fighting system is complex and brutal but in the perfect amounts to bring you a challenge. The graphics are beautiful pixle arts that give you the gloom, but also the beauty. I've recommended this game to plenty of friends who like text adventures. And I'll keep recommending it. This demo gave me a feast and left me craven (pun intended) more. I tip my hat to thee, and I'm hoping for the release of this game, but just like expensive meat, the best way to prepare it is slow cooking <3

Che dire, l'ho installato pensando fosse un semplice RPG text-based e invece ho scoperto fosse un piccolo capolavoro, è qualcosa di diverso da ciò che sono abituato a giocare e nella sua "semplicità" mi ha fatto emozionare più di certi altri titoli ben più importanti. L'atmosfera è resa in modo eccellente attraverso la ost, estremamente curata e appropriata, e la narrazione, che ho trovato ricercata e ben fatta, già da questo assaggio ho capito di volerne di più, quindi attenderò con ansia l'uscita del gioco completo.
