gory, dystopian, fast paced tactical boomer shooter. has a pace closer to nu wolfenstein than nu doom, but i think it's executed in a much more satisfying way here so far. really recommend!!
Мне вот это нечто понравилось больше, чем новый Doom. Играть и в то, и в другое весело. Игра на 6–9 часов и стоит копейки. Единственный минус — иногда теряешься на паре актов в закрытых локациях.
Fair warning: the game is violent and it's heavily contrasted by the anime aesthetic. I don't think this is ero guro as so many pearl-clutchers claim it is, but the contrast and shock factor of it all may dissuade you. If that's the case, move along. TLDR: PLAY THIS FIRST BEFORE BEYOND CITADEL. Great game and for cheap! Very interesting gunplay and generally fun levels. EXTREME contrast of anime girls getting dismembered, not for the faint of heart. Otherwise, graphics have that 90s charm, but the level visuals are all similar looking and can get disorienting/sickening to look at. Is a little buggy and will crash from time to time. Translation is quite botched making what little plot there is hard to follow. What you'll find here is a surprisingly well-crafted shooter that's full of passion (and you can definitely tell). Full disclosure: This is my FIRST "Boomer Shooter" (and my initial FPS experiences are informed by CoD:Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on the PS3 , yeah, I know. Crucify me for it, I don't care.) Let's talk stability first as it needs to be mentioned: this game WILL crash on you sometimes even if you have the greatest spec'd PC in the world. It's a little annoying, but you have to give credit given this was made by ONE GUY. Limiting FPS to 60 and playing on a single monitor helps. Now, the most important aspect: the gun play in this game is fantastic but takes some getting used to. Reloading like you would in a modern FPS drops all your ammo in the magazine and loads you a fresh one. This forces you to budget your ammunition and forces a more tactical approach....initially. Overtime as you get better at the game and get more weapons this is thrown out the window and the game becomes a bit too easy. Still, pulling out different weapons and trying them in all these scenarios is massively fun. There's ADS (not typical for a boomer shooter), and leaning. It's a mish mash of the modern and the retro and it all blends so well. Movement, on the other hand is... strange. It feels a tad bit heavy and somehow slippery at the same time. The double jump takes some getting used to as it feels weirdly floaty in a way I can't describe. Can't move in the air as much either, so lots of accidental deaths from that. Takes some getting used to for sure. The levels are mostly claustrophobic, but there's mixes of open air segments as well which force you to be a bit more tactical with your approach. Cover usage is a must, but eventually movement will be your friend to evade damage. This game is VIOLENT. There's no blood, but guts fly everywhere, enemies get dismembered, and their screams of agony and pain can be distressing for others. What you'll also see once dismembering enemies is that they are almost all anime girls. Again, I don't think it is fetishizing the violence, but it is definitely a grim sight which I think adds to the horror and surreal themes the game takes. The visuals are a mix of pixels from the early-mid 90s PC gaming days and the characters are in a hand drawn 90s-anime style. It works and blends really well. The levels however, can get nauseating to look at. Almost everything is this shade of sickly cyan-green through ALL SEVEN ACTS. It initially evokes this dungeon crawler feel but it gets REALLY old over time. Luckily, there's a map function to help you through it if you get a bit lost (which you eventually will once or twice). There's a story here that borrows from Evangelion in it biblical themes together with Geiger influences and lots of transhumanism. It's horrifying, surreal, and at times grotesque. It's supposed to be. The translation in the game is unfortunately botched (it feels like it was TL'd by someone with rudimentary Japanese, has English has their second or third language, and no proofreading done). Either way, the plot in this game is VERY thin and is fed to you in small (very obfuscated and metaphorical) droplets, so you can kinda cruise past them (You are, however, rewarded for playing this game first before Beyond Citadel, so try to keep track even a bit). This is hands down one of my surprise favorites. It's fatally flawed in many ways, but it's also so unbelievably polished for a game developed by ONE PERSON. I like it a lot, flaws, discomfort, crashes and all.
