The Citadel

It has a slow start for a boomer shooter and I have mixed feelings about the more realistic style of gunplay which is similar to modern FPSs like COD and Siege, compared to the over the top gunplay of other boomer shooters like Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, Serious Sam, Postal Brain Damaged and Ultrakill, but that's just my personal preference and the gunplay is pretty good for what it is. Once you get the hang of the gameplay loop, the game pretty quickly becomes more fast paced in it's combat and feels a lot more like a boomer shooter and it's quite fun. I really like the artsyle of the characters and sprites, as it reminds of 80s and 90s cyberpunk anime like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. The style of the evironments has a very retro vibe which I like, however there are lot of rooms and maps that look almost exacty the same, using a lot of the same colour and textures, so I wish there was more variety in that regard, but that's not to say the level design is repetitive, the actual layout of the maps is really good. The music might not be as exciting as the usual boomer shooter soundtrack, but it's not bad and it contributes to an interesting atmosphere that sets it apart nicely from the others. The world building is solid and throws you in without needing to explain much about how the world works, you can get a pretty good idea just by playing and the underlying story is also quite interesting. As of writing this, I am still quite early into the game, so some of my minor critiques could be invalid the further I progress. Overall this is a really solid game, and if you are a fan of boomer shooters, this might be a slight change of pace from what you are used to, but you will still find plenty of boomer shooter appeal.
