It was as good as I remembered from the first time I played this, back when the game was brand new.
I do not recommend this game at all. you constantly get lost and do not know where to go. For the puzzles, even though you know how to solve; it take too much time to implement which is boring and irritating.
Pros +Clever puzzles +Good narrator +Nice artwork +Good story Cons +Tedious +Backtracking +Slow animations I had some trouble deciding whether to recommend this game or not. Ultimately, I wasn’t enjoying my time playing it, so I don’t recommend it. The story is ok and the puzzles are clever. The narration is good and funny at times. However, zipping back and forth juggling 3 characters who are typically on different parts of the level got old very fast. Animations and walking speed were slow and I seemed to be fighting the controls throughout the game. Dying from fall damage happens a lot and I don’t really see a reason why it was even in the game. It would have made the game a bit faster, unless padding it out to take certain paths rather than dropping down was the intended direction. I also realized that no ambient music was playing, it was just the characters footsteps and other noises. Backtracking was a problem too. Overall, I found it to be a very tedious game; one I certainly did not want to play several times to go through with all the characters. 5/10 Average
I would first like to say, given the recent news, that Xbox and Microsoft can crash and burn in hell and every one of the many alt-right manchildren that celebrate their plans to shut down not just Double Fine, but ALL of the studios being threatened, do not actually like video games and should crawl back to whatever cesspool they came from. With that out of the way, The Cave is a lovely game brought to us by the combined efforts of Double Fine and veteran game designer Ron Gilbert. Taking inspiration from one of his earliest games, Maniac Mansion, The Cave is a cleverly designed puzzle game where you take control of 3 (out of a possible 7) characters and use them all to solve the many puzzles in the titular cave (which is alive and talks to you). I found the gameplay to be overall very fun. The puzzles feel just the right amount challenging and the main mechanic of switching between characters was satisfying. The aesthetics of the game are great too, especially with the unique set pieces each character has. They did a very good job in creating a diverse cast of characters with vastly different goals and personalities, even if they never actually speak! Every backstory is very charming and/or funny while also sprinkling in some nice social commentary underneath their simple surface. However, this is also a point of contention for me. While every character has their own unique level, there are levels that are universal and will always show up. These levels are great too, but they make replaying the game a lot more repetitive than it should be. Especially since there are 7 characters, meaning that in order to see all of the levels and backstories you will have to replay at least one level you already went through on top of the universal ones (which you will play 3 separate times if you're going for full completion). I find that to be a rather annoying oversight. Since I'm griping, I have to say, while I love Stephen Stanton, the lines they give him as The Cave were rather underwhelming for me. They're not particularly funny and in some cases give redundant information. But those do not erase the fact that this game is a very creative and fun ride that is absolutely worth at least one playthrough. I had a blast with this one and I'm sure anyone with a love of classic puzzle games will too!
It's early 2013, and because there's no viable space for adventure games in the digital marketplace, we have The Cave: an awkward marriage between classic PC adventures and the puzzle-platformer. This Double Fine/Ron Gilbert collaboration actually reminds me of later LucasArts releases like Grim Fandango and Escape from Monkey Island, in that a much better game ends up getting buried by an interface designed to appeal to modern tastes. In this case, the side-scrolling format just ends up adding a whole bunch of shoe leather to what could have been a much tighter experience; most of your time in The Cave is spent steering three characters around too-large levels just to get them to do something that otherwise would have taken a few mouse-clicks. This mix of genres feels genuinely novel at first, but it definitely wears on you by the time you get to the end of your first playthrough. Ideally, you're supposed to reach the end a few times to see each of the seven characters' stories play out in full—you can only select three per playthrough—but any motivation will fizzle out once you realize what you're in for. (Namely, playing the same long, mandatory segments all over again.) Thankfully Ron Gilbert was able to go right back to making adventure games after this, and The Cave remains a failed experiment in adventure gaming geared towards the 360 crowd.
RATING: 5/5 Definitely recommended, it is a charming witty little adventure about some goofy characters that are up to no good. There are seven protagonist and you can play with three of them at a time. After you finish the game you can replay and choose different characters. The game is a platformer that takes place in a cave, you will solve a lot of puzzles while spelunking. The puzzles are fun and interesting and sometimes require collaboration between the characters and good timing. The whole game is narrated by the "cave" itself, with a very funny and sarcastic tone.
