Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss

This is a great game. Would recommend it t others.

It was a neat little mystery story-teller. The story was captivating, the mystery-solving aspect was fun. I like the environment and setting, the ship was beautiful, the characters all had depth to them. A few oddities were that the dialogue between any two characters felt a little awkward. There were long pauses and a weird pace to conversation and flow. During recreations of "what happened" it would have been nice if there were more ambient sounds and foley when characters moved around. My only true dislike was at times it felt like the clues to solving some mysteries really didn't make sense or easy to conclude. Overall though, good game, worth 10 hours. In the end I chose to [spoiler] leave Alex behind. [/spoiler]

Thalassa: The Edge of the Abyss took me to the depths of the ocean, searching through the ruins of a sunken ship to learn how the fate of it, and it’s inhabitants, came to be. From the beginning, the game does a great job at drawing you into it’s atmosphere, especially once you get underwater. The game is supposed to be set in 1905, and while it does a decent job capturing the era in some respects, there are plenty of areas where it falls short, with numerous historical inaccuracies and bad world design elements. The animations, like others have mentioned, are very slow. While I understand that this was likely designed to add to the underwater immersion, it does get annoying after awhile. I doubt speeding up the animations a little bit would piss anyone off. The story is good. It’s got a deeper meaning that isn’t very clear until the end. I did find the reason for the ship sinking to be anti-climactic, but it did add to the overarching narrative and meaning of the game. There were some interesting twists throughout the game, subplots that I wasn’t expecting to end the way they did. The characters were well written with fairly good voice acting. I’m also a fan of the clue solving system, I think it was well implemented and really adds to the detective-style gameplay experience. I’d classify this game as a narrative-driven walking sim, so if that’s not your thing, you may want to pass on this one. Overall, I enjoyed my time on the Thalassa. It’s a fairly short game, taking around 7 to 10 hours to complete. I did 100% of the mysteries and clocked just over 8 hours. I think the $20 price tag is fine for an indie title such as this, but I’d probably just wait for a sale at this point. Side note: One of the achievements (Nautical Nomad) is a little buggy. It resulted in me having to revert to an older save, and walk around areas I’m pretty sure I had already visited to get it to eventually pop.

This is a delightful game. I was very invested in the story. It is basically a walking sim, though, so if that's not your jam don't play it.

This game made me cry, in a healing way.

I loved this game. Its a shame it has not sold as much as it deserves. Great story, production values and voice acting.
