Tex Murphy: Mean Streets

I'd honestly recommend to just skip this one and play the sequels, 75% of this game is just flying slowly from one place to another with no payoff and barely anything to be called a story.

This is the 1989 classic that launched the Tex Murphy franchise that remains one of the true icons of the video gaming industry. it is a short game by modern standards, but well worth playing to see the original version of the story before the Overseer rewrite.

Very straightforward detective game. Not so much puzzles and quite simple mechanics, but it somehow manages to be really fun.

It's old and primitive but if you want a cheap hard-boiled detective game with a cyberpunk twist this is it.

2033, Post-WWIII San Francisco Tex Murphy is a P.I. in the dirty future. A femme fatale shows up at your door, claiming her father was murdered, and she wants you to uncover the conspiracy behind his death -- the Law & Orders of the S.F.P.D. say it was suicide. She's paid you $10,000 in cash. Solve the case. This love letter to 'Blade Runner' has you taking to the untextured skies in your hovercar for a flight sim that would make Rick Deckard proud; while covering the irradiated west coast in your search for the truth. You will also interview/intimidate an exotic array of characters through a parser interface, or slowly search single-screen areas for clues. Combat is a simplistic ordeal where you duck incoming autofire and move from screen left to screen right, while throwing some perforating bullets of your own. There is also no soundtrack to speak of, just the same tune which sometimes pops up when you move to a new area -- leaving you in silence for most of the game. You may occasionally trigger a sound effect or two. Overall, it's ponderous, irritating, and frustrating to play in 2023 -- but it would have been a good time in 1989. Mostly recommended to those with nostalgia for it -- or that rare breed of the hardest core old school gamer.

A bit rough around the edges but still an enjoyable noir detective adventure.

Look at the other reviews about con's and nearly all of them are completely valid. Going to one place from a another takes a load of time thanks to flying. For nostalgic and historic purposes it's a great game to play. I couldn't finish it because it takes too long to fly.

Old but gold! Has aged really well for the most part and is a lot of fun. Good atmospheres and lots of ideas for its day.
