Was a fantastic indie horror game. Definitely had some aspects that I had never seen before. Don't let the math equations take you away from the game. It is such a refreshing idea compared to some of the indie horror games that are getting thrown out these days. Worth the price for sure.
i liked give me some scary moments and good puzzles
Small but entertaining horror game. First one from this dev. It has an interesting setting, some puzzles (mostly finding object to continue on the path), good atmosphere. A few areas with actual danger, so it's not just a walking sim. Pretty dark overall, requiring you to use various lightsources, like a flashlight or a lighter. At first, I was constantly afraid of running out of batteries or lighter fluid. Same for some other resources you might need. Turned out this was totally unnecessary because there's plenty of everything to be found. Nothing complicated or out of the ordinary. Just a good mix of reasonably easy puzzles and fun exploration. Very good for a first project.
When entering the dorms, there should be two drawings on the table that trigger the next objective once collected. Unfortunately, they never appeared for me. On top of that, all of the puzzles inside the dorms were already solved, which I assume is because they're only supposed to be reset or activated after picking up the drawings. Overall, this was an incredibly frustrating and time-wasting experience.
I'm definitely playing this developer's games out of order but I still enjoyed it. Learned more lore about this "buffer" and it was interesting.
One of the Just Sauce games playing in the "Buffers" world. I like the idea of the world and that things are not always as they may seem. In general, this game has a dark atmospheric walking simulator, lots of jump scares and some psychological horror elements. It has puzzles, but they are easy, which is ok for this short game - it's about the atmosphere, not about solving world problems. I played it before going to bed, and for me it was like a good-night-story. I love horror, and find horror relaxing, though. Expect lots of well used and known game assets. ❤ Audience ❤ ☑ Beginner ☑ Casual Gamer ☑ Normal Gamer ☑ Expert ☼ Graphics ☼ ☐ Bad ☑ Alright ☐ Good ☐ Beautiful ☐ Fantastic ♬ Music ♬ ☐ Bad ☑ Alright ☑ Good ☐ Beautiful ☐ Fantastic ☠ Difficulty ☠ ☑ Easy ☐ Average ☐ Easy to learn / Hard to master ☐ Hard ☐ Unfair § Bugs § ☐ Bugs destroy the game ☐ Lots of bugs ☐ Few Bugs ☐ You can use them for speedrun ☑ Nothing encountered ☯ Story ☯ ☐ There is none ☐ Bad ☐ Alright ☑ Good ☐ Fantastic ⚔ Gameplay ⚔ ☐ Frustrating ☐ Sleepy ☐ Boring ☑ Fun ☐ Challenging ۞ Game time / Length ۞ ☑ Really short (0 - 3 hours) ☐ Short (4 - 8 hours) ☐ Few hours (10 - 20 hours) [if you focus on the main story] ☐ Long (40-60 hours) [if you complete everything] ☐ Very Long (61-100 hours) ☐ Extremely Long (101+ hours) $ Price / Quality $ ☑ Full price ☐ Wait for Sale ☐ Don't buy ☐ Refund it if you can
Test Of Courage, developed and published by Just Sauce Studio, is a compact first-person horror experience that builds its identity around atmosphere, exploration, and a steady sense of unease rather than mechanical complexity. Set within the eerie confines of an abandoned school, it follows a familiar premise—returning to a place tied to a mystery—but manages to sustain engagement through careful pacing and environmental storytelling rather than relying purely on shock value. The narrative places players in the role of Marco, who ventures into the deserted Brave Wood Academy after receiving a cryptic message connected to the disappearance of two friends. The story unfolds gradually as players explore the building, uncovering clues and piecing together what happened. Rather than relying heavily on cutscenes or exposition, the game uses its environment to convey information, encouraging players to pay attention to details scattered throughout the school. This approach gives the experience a sense of discovery, even if the overall plot remains relatively straightforward. Gameplay centers on exploration and light puzzle-solving. Players move through interconnected areas of the school, searching for key items needed to progress while avoiding threats that emerge at specific moments. The structure is semi-linear, allowing some freedom in navigation while still guiding players toward objectives. Puzzles are generally simple, often involving locating objects or interpreting basic clues, which helps maintain a smooth pace. While this accessibility ensures that players are rarely stuck for long, it also means that the game does not offer much in the way of deeper or more intricate problem-solving. Where Test Of Courage finds its strength is in its atmosphere. The abandoned school setting is used effectively, with dim lighting, narrow corridors, and subtle environmental changes creating a persistent sense of tension. The game relies on a mix of traditional horror techniques—such as sudden scares—and quieter, more psychological elements that build unease over time. Audio plays a key role here, with ambient sounds and distant noises contributing to the feeling that something is always just out of sight. This combination keeps players alert, even during slower moments of exploration. Encounters with hostile entities are present but not overly demanding. The game avoids turning these moments into complex combat or stealth challenges, instead using them to reinforce tension. Once players understand how to react, these encounters become more about anticipation than difficulty, which can slightly reduce their impact over time. However, they still serve their purpose in maintaining the overall tone and pacing of the experience. Visually, the game delivers a solid presentation for an indie title. The environments are detailed enough to feel believable, with textures and lighting that enhance the mood without requiring high-end visuals. The school itself is designed in a way that supports both navigation and tension, with areas that feel distinct while still contributing to a cohesive whole. The interface is minimal and unobtrusive, allowing players to remain immersed in the environment. The game’s relatively short length works to its advantage. Most playthroughs can be completed in a few hours, which helps prevent the core mechanics from becoming repetitive. The pacing remains consistent throughout, with a clear progression from exploration to resolution. While this brevity means that certain ideas and themes are not explored in depth, it also ensures that the experience remains focused and easy to complete. Despite its strengths, Test Of Courage does not significantly evolve its mechanics as it progresses. The core loop—explore, collect, avoid—remains largely unchanged, and players looking for more variety or complexity may find the experience somewhat limited. Additionally, while the story provides a clear motivation, it does not delve deeply into its themes, leaving some narrative elements feeling underdeveloped. Ultimately, Test Of Courage is a well-crafted but modest horror experience that succeeds through atmosphere and pacing rather than innovation. It offers a focused journey that is easy to engage with and delivers a consistent sense of tension from beginning to end. While it may not stand out in a crowded genre, it provides a solid and enjoyable experience for players seeking a short, immersive horror title. Rating: 7/10
Okay so, I played the first three games of this rather new developper (including "Was it worth it?" and "Born Into Fear"). Here is my opinion about Test of Courage: While it may look like a lot of indie Horror games, this one is a little different. Rather than "just" being a walking simulator with jumps scares and stealth mecanics, this one focuses on a supernatural atmosphere with puzzles and quite interesting story and backstory. They are not just telling you a story, they try to create a "world" with its lore, giving it a little more depth. I was never particularly "stuck" but english is not my primary language, and one the puzzles (which consists of unscrambling english words) proven to be quite difficult for me. As a first game though, it's pretty well done.
Great atmosphere, cool and creative horror elements, good art & environment design, terrible level design and okayish game design. The gameplay was quite diverse and the storyline wasn't depicted well thus it was messy. Overall I've totally enjoyed spending couple of hours in this universe. Keep up the good work in the future but you might wanna focus on level & game design and also improving the coding.
