Reviews
Glancing at the store page it felt like a merry mingling of Tetris and any match-3 game flushed with block pastel colours. Now I feel satisfied with my length and depth of a playthrough to write this review, it no longer bears the resemblance of any game I'm accustomed to as it primarily had. Swapperoo takes the simple idea and timeless arcade gameplay of combining three blocks of an identical nature, adds both manifold and idiosyncratic features making it a truly distinctive puzzle game. Containing a plethora of tile types and multitude of goals (a new one per level) within a robust collection of game modes this kept my interest for hours. It took approximately 16 hours to complete just the community achievements offered (two extra available in-game) minus idling time. Basically around 11 hours were spent playing the hard level since incidentally I am not good at puzzle games and the hard level is moderately challenging. It never once frustrated or bored me which is saying a lot for a puzzle game with this much content. The following has been spoiler proofed as some parts are revealing and specific about the puzzle features. The main game offers 25 "Normal" levels which act as a tutorial for what is to come, with an additional 13 "Hard" levels that are tough but fair. The player needs to match tiles of the same colour regardless of the shape (▲,■,●) to fulfil the objective of each level. The goals keep changing since new types of tiles and additional rules are introduced to make it more trickier. There are normal tiles,
skull tiles that detonate after a certain number of moves, padlocks that can appear both on normal/skull tiles (you'll need to clear them twice to eliminate them completely), star tiles, wormholes, "dead" grey tiles, and fixed tiles that can't be moved until broken.
Three different skill types exist dependent on the number and type of tiles you remove with successful matches: swap (▲ tiles), delay (■ tiles) and detonate (●tiles). It is imperative to apply these skills strategically in your game to complete the more demanding latter levels. The ▲ triangle tiles also point in all cardinal directions and appear as part of the many variations of aims for each level (e.g. destroy 40 ◀ left triangles etc...). Consider it an arcade game as well as being a puzzle since like Tetris your moves can be made within a certain time frame using quick reflexes synchronous to puzzle solving skills saving the day an inch from a deathly bomb explosion.
To recapitulate, a skull tile wouldn't be constricted to a precise number of moves if timed correctly; with only 1 move remaining on a skull tile I could easily make 2 swift successive moves to remove it before detonation.
If it gets hard you can do what I did and skip to the 3 different "Challenge" modes each with 25 levels totalling 75 levels. Despite the name it is a fun break from the original game. Challenge levels offer less of an arcade experience and more of a classic puzzle experience. The puzzle has a set solution (you can find your own too) to complete the level by destroying all blocks in a certain number of moves or less. Unlike the main game this automatically comes a lack of replay value but a much more simplified experience for the classic puzzler. Although figuring out a solution does get perplexing at some points it is a yet more tranquil experience and easier than the main game. If all fails, there is a skip and hint button, or an auto hint depending on the mode. The hint button for challenge modes uses points gained while playing the game and there is no lack of them to need to farm any in advance. The auto hint which pops up during the main game after a lapse of time is rarely the best answer unless it is the only move available on your current board. The skip feature only works on the next level of a level you've already completed. Like previously stated, Swapperoo isn't an aggravating or taxing game the way many longer puzzle games can end up so requires less of the hint/skip option. Extremely enjoyable, I did my very best to lengthen my playtime even more for levels like one would add days to a relaxing holiday in the Bahamas. Taking my laptop to bed and smiling blissfully at the screen while being able to play Swapperoo lying on my side with easy clicks from my mouse is the reason I started playing it. It's a splendid and addictive game to amuse yourself with before bedtime or even when bedridden, suffering through a ghastly cold. With Swapperoo you needn't have to sit at a PC or even sit at all. After all that you might even start playing the extra difficult modes provided by the game in forms of an "Endless" mode, "Gauntlet" mode (playing through levels A-Z with one life), and last but not least, an extra difficult and timed version of the "Gauntlet" mode. There is a kick ass leaderboard for each game mode and gloriously brilliant and useful Steam Cloud save feature which I usually find syncs horrendously unreliably for other games but worked exceptionally well for Swapperoo across multiple devices and several re-downloads.

Cute graphics, relaxing atmosphere. Nice polish on the interface. The gameplay is simple, click on a shape to shift it a direction or remove it. Some of the shapes have a countdown timer, you have to keep removing those or else. However because you don't have perfect control over the direction, you have to plan. Sometimes it seems impossible, but more than once I realized some way to clear the skulls right on time. Those little moments feel satisfying. However just as often you feel screwed that you randomly didn't get the right shapes and have no chance of clearing them in time. You could play perfectly and still lose, that kind of sucks. There some hint at a story of a wierd glitchy AI trying to escape, it makes you want to keep playing. Overall it's exactly what you would expect, a shiney puzzle game. I bit the bullet for $7, and I'm not quite sure it's worth that much. If you love puzzle games then go for it, otherwise wait for a sale.
Know the Drill…
Skull Bomb…
I've beaten it on Normal, but Hard stopped me dead with its first levels. This isn't a puzzle, this is a ritual sacrifice of your sanity on the battlefield of mind attrition. I recommend ditching the game's musical loop and go for something hard like Electric Wizard, maybe Witchcult Today. Hard, because this is how your ass will be handed to you. Switch and move, switch-around, pop and align, reverse switch, then protect, then disarm a bomb on its last turn, one out of many, and not then but now, now, everything is happening at the same time, oh wrong move, that's it you're OUT! This is Chechnya! Sorry, I think Swapperoo gave me a concussion. The bombs don't tick in real time, which is a relief, right? Wrong! You've given as much freedom of movement as you need to screw yourself over with your own hands... or turn the tables! Last turn saves and accidental strokes of genius are the biggest joys you're allowed to have. If only it could happen more often in this random's Saw trap. Gigantic cooldowns on you 3 skills further 'prolong gratification' - swap, delay, detonate. The latter is a screen-cleaner and lifesaver at that, as you can imagine. I could sure use more of those or I'd take stuff blowing up after a particularly impressive match. Can't imagine how it wouldn't add to the game. Anyway, make your skills count or not, you can always get unlucky and face a retry. And while it could be miserable, the overall appealing design made Swapperoo a pleasant boxed Hell for those who inexplicably are into an unforgiving, brutal match-3 experience that wipes with your face. Personally, I suck at it, but I'm going back either to avenge myself or to be humiliated again. Real talk: ~3.5 hours of more or less compliant Normal, can be played mouse-only, dirt cheap. How could I not recommend it. My curator Big Bad Mutuh
This game is almost too good! much variety, pure fun! Thanks, Fallen Tree, can I have more games like this?
a less conventional matching game from the guys behind the fantastic quell series. move tiles mostly by clicking arrows that understandibly only move in one direction. breakable circles to make way, squares are just innocent bystanders, doing whatever the other shapes dictate, unless they're fixed. skulls have to be matched before their timer runs out, power-ups come in the form of cards, charged incredibly slowly with different shapes. then there are portals, drills, etc. normal and endless modes are available from the start. 25 levels, each with different goals, unlocked one at a time, but level skip becomes an option after a few failed attempts. and fail you will, there are a few stinkers in the second half ('s', 'u', 'w' and 'y' for me). gauntlet (the whole thing with one life) and timed gauntlet modes are also ready to go, hard mode with 13 ♥♥♥♥-off levels and 75 puzzle challenges only after some progression. the latter comes in 3 packs, unlocked 3 at a time. move limit that can sometimes be beaten, but also undo (doesn't work after a reset) and a solution if you're hopelessly stuck (limited amount, get more by completing the challenge packs). I prefer clever few-move ones to 15-20+ steps and luckily most are the former here. 22/25 to unlock the next batch is way too high a requirement though, half or so should be enough, though I managed all of them except 73. weirdly enough, the next level only unlocks on hard mode level select after a skip, normal ones can't be replayed until the skipped one is solved. skipping the last normal level simply crashes the game without unlocking hard mode, despite the notification, and unsolved hard mode stages get locked again next session, though with level skip available if it was before. make your mind up, game. nice, clean presentation, jazzy music (negative for me), windowed mode, resolutions, color blind mode, hint and instructions toggles and repeatable tutorial. only separate toggles for audio, no volumes (the power-up jingle is really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ loud), and the achievements button only brings up the steam overlay, lazy. plus one of my nitpicks, score is shown as 123456 instead of 123,456. I thought it was great initially, almost finished normal mode in one sitting, but more and more annoyances popped up. literally, what with too many simultaneous restrictions and timers, the same issue anagrams had after a while, destroying all the fun. here it only affects a handful of normal levels and hard mode with the clue in its name, though hard and whatever this ridiculousness is are not the same. good stuff otherwise, liked the challenges too, but it could've been even better. dial back on skulls and some goals, charge power-ups faster, increase the delay power-up, fix level skip, add volume settings, done.
Swapperoo is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. It's yet another of literally hundreds of mobile app Match-3/Bejewelled/Candy Crush ripoff games infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. They tried to differentiate from Candy Crush slightly here in that you can't just move the tiles around, you're given very specific tiles that have special moves (like swapping, being removed etc) but this doesn't really change up the old, tired, dead match-3 gameplay that iPhone gamers inexplicably love so much. Did I mention my gaming rig is not an iPhone yet? I will, and not for the last time. From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. While there are options to change the resolution for the mobile app, all this does is scale up the simplistic low quality vector art assets used to make the mobile app, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the mediocre 2D visuals. Candy Crush had nice images of candy, Bejewelled has gams... so at the design meeting, they just said "No just plain tiles. Tiles. We'll do tiles. Tiles are great. Let's make them pastel. People love bland pastel tiles way more than cake or jewels. I'm a mobile app developer. Let's launch it on Steam." At least that's how I imagine it went. Who knows how such garbage games get designed, let alone dumped here on Steam. The developers didn't design the mobile app for modern gaming PCs, as such the display resolution caps out at around 1440p, there's no support for the state-of-the-art 4K or higher resolutions. The mobile app simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone. These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Swapperoo didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the mobile app, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the mobile app didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for matching 8 tiles, trivial to get, but less than 19 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the mobile app. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the mobile app. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this mobile app was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the mobile app. But this only happened once, and isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 19 percent of players bothered playing the mobile app for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this mobile app to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother engaging with this mobile app? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this mobile app for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the mobile app just has a couple of players every week running up the mobile app and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many mobile apps like this, with little merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. So, should you buy this mobile app? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Swapperoo has the laughable price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
