Crystalized enemy at 80 percent of tries flow you in trap. Power ups didnt work (excluding shields) Its not a hard game, its a annoying trash
plays like a flash game. decent progression for first 15 minutes, then gets very frustrating and unforgiving. no auto-fire, dead ends in mazes. not being able to shoot diagonally feels terrible. you MUST
collect ALL emeralds
to clear the game.
So I fundamentally LIKE THIS GAME. It's a good genre hybrid between falling block and shmups. The art is good, the game engine is good, the core gameplay works. However, the progression system is fundamentally a PIECE OF TRASH. The progression system should NOT have been included. When in doubt, your shmup should have as much progression as the old-school arcade games: Zero. None. Nada, 1) There aren't enough upgrades to max out every ship in the game. Progression-based games create completionists (I am one of these), and a game where you can't do everything is a frustrating non-starter. When you included a progression system in your game, you inherently promised me that I could 'get' everything in your game. Nope. SOLUTION: Let me spend gems on upgrades? Let me play new-game plus to get more upgrade items? idk 2) Choosing the right ship for each stage is not an interesting choice. You're basically making us pass a weird knowledge check. There's usually a "correct" choice for each stage, where you're choosing a ship that can resist the stage hazards. This isn't a gameplay choice, this is a basic knowledge check. (When combined with the limited upgrades, you're also playing with ships that you haven't upgraded and will never upgrade...) SOLUTION: Include only one ship in the game, and remove enemies from your game completely. If you don't want me to play around your enemies, just don't include them! 3) What power level am I supposed to be? This is fundamentally my problem with progression-based systems. You're rewarding skilled players by,,, making the game easier. How many hits do you expect me to have for each stage? How many shots should it take to defeat each enemy? How fast should my ship move? There are no correct answers to any of these questions, because it changes over the course of the game. The beginning of the game is a frustrating grind because it takes six shots to destroy a jellyfish. Why does it take that many shots? To make you feel relief at the end of the game when you can kill them with one shot. This kind of design is not okay. SOLUTION: No upgrades! Your ship should start the game at its final power level. Pick a power level, and balance your game around that. If you want ambiguity and replay value in your game, just give me a scoring system. You can even make survival easy and scoring a challenge; this is what Astebreed does. (Casual onlookers might rightly point out that most traditional horizontal shmups feature powerups and ask, why omit them if the classics did? To which I would answer, later titles like Giga Wing and Progear both reduced powerups to a formality, and this was a good design change. You can max out your power in the first stage of these games, and then you stay at full power for the rest of the game. You technically have to recover after a death and scoop your powerups back up after you drop them, but this powerup design makes collection an aesthetic process and not truly integral to the design. Power-ups are honestly just a tool to suck in genre newbies at the arcade and make them think that they're playing well, even if they're not.)
This was DYA's first game and while it's very interesting, this mashup of puzzle and shmup works... UP TO A POINT! Since the puzzle are generated randomly you can be just unlucky and not be able to beat that level, but it gets WORSE. The levels get more complicated and you get shot at, ok no big deal, but then you get obstacles that can TRIGGER PUZZLE PIECES! Sure, I can dodge flames... Oh, that flame triggered a block and the level in incompletable AGAIN! I hate that I can't give this a mixed review, but it doesn't deserve a bad one. The upgrade system is useless when it's the obstacles triggering the blocks, I can have max HP, max everything, if a flame triggers a block and ruins my path, I'm dead.
1.5/10 can only shoot 1 way the levels are random they Kobayashi Maru-ed me every single thing was a wall or turned to crystal so i couldn't break them no path for me to choose from ok i will just hit it and take 1 damage, still got 2 more lives got hurt as they pushed me off the screen. nothing i could do run into this 3 times
There's not much here. - Controller support is backwards. Not A and B, but X and A. Your muscle memory will screw you over. - Voice lines are annoying and patronizing - Confusing interface: no indication of which levels are meant to be easier or harder. Controller mapping also causes struggles here - Simple and frustrating gameplay loop. Die a lot. Keep grinding. Just tedium. I can see what I'm supposed to do to improve, but the game is not fun enough to want to.
Very cute little retro pixel art style game perfect for the Steam Deck. There are 6 stages total and they are split up between puzzle section and boss section. During the puzzle section, you have to blast aliens to clear a path. The boss sections play out as your typical bullet hell shooter and can be quite the challenge. You should get a good few hours of fun out of this cute little game. Worth noting however, if you plan on getting all achievements, they seem to only be properly tracked and unlocked on Windows. I beat the game and did everything including boss rush on the Steam Deck, but nothing unlocked. So, I installed it on my Windows desktop, then used steam input to configure turbo mode on the shoot button. This helped me beat the whole game again and get all achievements in less than an hour.
