This game is a grandiose example that "a hard game does not a fun game make". Is this game hard? Yes it is. Is it fun? Not at all. Is it worth playing? Not in my opinion. The controls are really clunky. Unlike games such as Super Meat Boy or even the old good Super Mario Bros, your character has no momentum. When you stop pressing the left/right stick button you immediately stop mid-air. That's it. You just drop like a potato. That wouldn't be a big of a issue if the game didn't rely so much on accurate jumps. This mechanic cheapens the experience. Most of the time you will die because of this weird choice of controls. Surely you could get used to it if not for the fact that the game difficulty spikes too quickly before you can get used to the controls. It wouldn't be worth the effort anyway because the game itself is really uninspired. We've seen this done better in other games, including the obvious source material Super Meat Boy. This game does nothing new. The hitboxes are another huge problem. In some stages they are completely broken. There was this stage where I kept dying after landing on a square with lava underneath. I died only because I wasn't exactly on the center of the square. I was still on the square but since I was not absolutely dead centered the game considered that I touched the lava and killed me. The same thing happened with sawmills. The sawmill didn't touch me but the game thought it did. You have to take extra effort of assuming that the hitbox will not work properly, otherwise you will die. If you trust what you see on screen, you will get frustrated. The game needed more polish before being released. I tried to like this game but I just can't. I am a fan of tough platformers. I've done 106% in Super Meat Boy, including some of the harder achievements such as no death runs. I beat 1001 Spikes including Antarctica. I really like challenging games. The problem is that this game is just not good. The level design is uninspired. Levels are bland and there is no variation really. You see one stage you see them all. One thing I really despise in this game is when you die you get a message such as "You died. That sucks". Eventually if you die too much you get an "achievement" such as "100th sawmill death" or something like that. Maybe some people find it funny. I find it revealing of the game designer true intentions. SMB designers and Dark Souls designers don't want the player to fail. They want the player to succeed. They didn't make a hard game for difficulty's sake. People who made this game seem to want players to fail. This is obviously inspired by I Wanna Be The Guy. The problem is that it was treated as joke in IWBTG. Death was funny. Not the case in here. The hightlights for me are the soundtrack and the cutscenes. Those are really well made. I didn't expect production design this good in an indie game. The cutscenes are much better than those of Super Meat Boy and the writing is clever. I also like that you can restart the level at anytime by pressing Y. Having said that, there isn't much else that is positive. I have no idea how hard it must be to make your own game. I hope the creators don't get discouraged. The game has a lot of potential. It just needs more polish and a better approach to game design.
Ever so similar to SMB but with co-op option. Player One is the primary player with the camera following them, so it kinda makes it a little tougher on player Two... or timing and coordination is required to ensure both players get equal response times. Either way, it's fun with two players!! If you enjoy SMB you will enjoy this. Everything plays real smooth.
Runs nice and is a lot of fun, I beat the first boss and thought that was it but THERE'S MORE STORY, I'm probably gonna be playing this for a while!
This game is rage-inducing, challenging, and has made me angry at my controller countless times within the first 20 minutes of playing. Oh wait, not countless times. Exactly 97 times within 20 minutes. That's how many times I died within the first 14 levels on easy mode. Super Robot Jump Jump is a fantastic platformer true to the genre. There aren't any deviations from what it claims to be. It is a challenging platformer through and through. The music sets the tempo of the game as you blast through parts of the level after dying to a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cloud over and over again. As soon as you make an error you tap Y (on the gamepad, my preferred method of platforming) and reset the level immediately. The pace is fast, the challenge is high, and the rewards are great! There is no feeling like that of completing a level that increased my death counter from 47 to 82 (Level 12 Ugh). The art is cartoony and whimsical with a story and voice over work that matches that feeling beat for beat. If you enjoy challenging platformers like Super Meat Boy or comedic platformers such as BattleBlock Theater, I would definitely recommend Super Robot Jump Jump.
I'm honestly not a huge platformer fan so I went into this a bit hesitant. I just finished Salt and Sanctuary and am eagerly anticipating Dark Souls 3. After a few hours of SRJJ my controller is adequately sweaty and I am equally as salty. I'm only on level 27 but this game is really fantastic if you're willing to put in the time. Controller is highly advised. Good, brief narrative cutscenes and some really fantastic soundtrack (Volcano level is epic as hell)
Very fun game and very challenging, especially on hard. If you enjoyed Super Meat Boy, highly recommend checking this out. EDIT: I've put more time into this game and just wanted to add, I'm on normal mode and up to 2300 deaths already, after completing world 3 (60 levels). This game is very good at tilting me, but at the same time, making me want to push myself to beat the next level and this is on normal mode. If you like a challenge, I highly recommend giving this game a shot.
A tough 2D platformer that struggles with pacing, and sometimes feels more like a chore than playing a game. Video Review: https://youtu.be/0bCZItcdZf8 This game is fun for a little while, once your past about the first stage and boss, you spend the first few levels in a new area enjoying the new mechanics, then those mechanics get taken to insane levels until playing this game is more like creating your own death montage on the fly. Nothing wrong with that, one of my biggest problems, is that the later levels don't tend to add much other than just the same mechanics introduced earlier, but harder versions of them. After about half way in each area, I found myself exiting back to the map to see if I was almost at the boss, to which I'd realize I still had 5 or 6 levels left and would reluctantly start playing again to reach the next boss. Synopsis: A difficult platformer, with a nice art style, cute little robot pal, voice acted bland storey that gets a bit boring after a few levels in a new area until you reach the boss and play the next few levels in the next area, rinse and repeat. Edit: I added a more detailed review, as it seems some people weren't finding it helpful. :)
A charming and somewhat challenging platformer with quite a lot of character. Starts off very easy, and the difficulty curve is very gentle, but it gets fairly challenging after a while. It's nothing revolutionary, but it's really solid and enjoyable.
This game is lots of fun and the controls are crisp and clean. Highly recommend this game if you enjoy platformers.
I played the game while it was in alpha and absolutely loved it. The first few levels show you the basics, then the difficulty ramps right on up, and I very much prefer it that way; no hand holding, just "here's your controls, now go die". The story is cute, with some hilarious little jokes sprinkled in, and the animations are great. Fast-paced and hard as balls, I'd recommend this game any day.
