4/5 star
This is probably one of the worst games I've played this year, but it has so much charm that I remained engrossed throughout the entire runtime. There is so much grind in this game, whether it's to level up your character, acquire the college degrees, or work a job to have enough money to continue forward that I can easily see people walking away within the first 2 hours. The progression at points is so nonsensical that it infuriates me a solid chunk of the time. This game would not have been finished if I didn't pull out a guide 4/5 of the way through to see what I missed. While the game does tend to guide you to explore the entire map to pick up items and see what are in shops, here is some of the things I missed. - After buying the big house in the south side of Sun Villa, go beneath the house to a pathway that looks the same as every other inaccessible pathway, go through the trees which are normally a solid barrier, and enter the Spookytown portal. - Stand in a very finicky spot next to the school bus sign in Downtown Sun Villa to go to North Park, then walk through the trees (again, normally solid barrier) to find Randy. Return to Randy once you acquire the sword of truth from Dustin's garage in Diamond City once you complete his quest. There is nothing in the game that even hints that you can check garages, and it hasn't been a feature until that point or beyond it to my memory. - After buying the house in the southeast of Golden Springs and repairing the train station in Golden Springs, check the postal box on the end of the street with Doc for a ticket to the North Pole. The ticket does not show up until you complete these two objectives, which by the time you do you will most likely just move on to the third city. - While in Spooky Town, walk through the trees directly to the south (which again are solid barriers everywhere else) to the Grand Pumpkin, and speak to him wearing the pumpkin shirt bought in Golden Springs. Cut through a gap in the fence that isn't visible due to the camera angle and feed a dog treat to Mr. Bones for the Skeleton Key. For all of these examples, I could find zero hints for any of these objectives in the game, and only completed them thanks to a steam guide I found. While I should write this game off entirely, the absolute variety of locations and characters give the game an immense amount of charm that allow you to overlook these issues. This game is a near perfect encapsulation of what internet culture was like in 2019, so much so that I recognized this within the first couple areas and kept getting taken on the nostalgia trip throughout the rest of the game. If you are looking for a reason to play this game, this is easily the strongest one for me. There is so much charm in this game that it can keep you going even when the gameplay is at it's weakest. I am in absolute awe of this game, and I can't recommend it to anyone.
