Super Life of Pixel is a nostalgia-filled trip down memory lane that had me grinning from ear to ear. This pixel-perfect gem transported me back to the good old days of gaming, with lovingly recreated retro themes from different gaming eras. Steam Deck gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f399544D1k4 From the 8-bit chiptunes to the charmingly blocky graphics, this game nailed the essence of classic gaming. It was like I had dusted off my old consoles and hooked them up to a time machine. The attention to detail is mind-blowing, and the gameplay is just as addictive as the classics it pays homage to. Super Life of Pixel deserves a standing ovation for bringing back the best of gaming history while adding its own unique twists. Trust me, this game will pixelate your heart!
Simple but neat little colorful platformer. Lots of interesting stages in the style of classic console games and a nice soundtrack to tie it all together. It's good fun for a bit!
It has serious accessibility issues: No difficulty level No checkpoints. You will die a lot and start over the same level with many challenges you had already overcome only to do so again and again or fail them out of lack of patience. A game like "VVVVVV" exists, learn from it. No sound volume, only on/off switch. The art is gorgeous and its the main reason I bought this game, sadly I can't bear to repeat the same level again for a chance to see the rest of the game systems.
I've had my problems with this game, and the more I play it the more ridiculous it gets. First off, early on in the game there are some areas where you have to be pixel perfect to make the jump, and if you are off by any amount you fail. The difficulty on some of these levels are just ridiculous! You know what will help in a platformer like this? Checkpoints. There is not a single level in this game that has checkpoints, and in some levels this realization is devastating. In the early levels, sure, collect like 10-20 gems, ok whatever. But in the later levels where you have to collect 60-90 gems, no checkpoints makes this next to impossible. There are also other areas where this can improve, such as enemy hitboxes and movement patterns. Some hitboxes are too large for narrow spaces, and most enemy patterns are unpredictable, making it guaranteed to get hit. Getting hit is no big deal, until you realize that in the majority of levels you cannot heal. Also, is some levels the devs went all out with the spikes, hidden or not. Other than these glaring problems, this is just an average platformer with visuals mimicking that of older hardware with a bit of info of each piece of tech. Edit: after 100% this game (according to the game itself, not getting all the achievements), I can confidently say that this is not a good nor fun game to play. This reeks with unfair game design, I found myself yelling at my monitor because a single pixel from a spike touched me and that killed me, losing all my progress for the level. Don't play this game. Want to experience gaming history? Read up and emulate the systems mentioned here, you will have a much better time with that than anything this game does.
I want to give this a thumbs-up, because I remember and enjoyed playing a lot of the consoles and home computers this game imitates. The thing is, though, that I'm thinking about re-installing this game and making a second attempt at finishing it and I realize I'm just not going to do it. The game doesn't play like the best games on these old systems, it plays like the mediocre games that your grandmom would see for $5 in the discount aisle and get for you for Christmas. Great concept; average execution. If I won't even install and play it despite already owning it, I have to recommend that you just not own it in the first place.
I'm a bit lazy when it comes to writing reviews but this game is incredible good. And when I read bad reviews about this game I think, you're missing the point here. Basic platforming won't get any better than this. The control you have over the pixel is hard to find in other platforming games. The level design is amazing with a cool learning curve. Sometimes I think, this level is a bit unfair but with a lot of practice I manage to progress and the feeling is very rewarding. I'm 60 years of age and have owned most of the machines since 1984 and it's a constant trip down memory lane with very accurate graphics from each machine. In the eighties it was all about 'playability', and that's what this game is about, great playability, it's just that - one more go - feeling. Well done guys and thank you for this game!
A loving tribute to the era of 2D through the life of a single pixel. Each level is a self contained "theme" that spans across console/pc eras. It has a difficulty spike that is very notable but I enjoyed this experience immensely. Worth the full price easily - 10/10
ABURRIDO
Alright so for some reason I actually got 100% on this old Indie platformer despite the TONS of issues it has. So I have a lot to say about it. The hitboxes are very clearly perfect hitboxes which usually leaves you thinking you shouldn't have died in many situations. Some of the later levels (Especially the "Special Consoles" section) are absurdly unfair to the point this feels like a troll platformer game. A lot of the UI is pretty jank in general. There is no Level Select, and you cant even loop back around the consoles, so if you go back to the main menu at any time and are on the last console in the game, you have to scroll all the way there every time. The special item usage isn't explained very well, there is only 1 special item you can actually throw (Hammers) and it has a dedicated keybind even though every other special item in the game uses a different keybind. Not the biggest issue, but just seems uneeded. Viewing distance... I swear half the difficulty of the game is that so many obstacles are offscreen, which is a pain since the character you play jumps high enough to go like 1.5 whole screens high. So you usually end up jumping into things by accident. All that being said however, I will say the visuals are actually pretty nice, and the level design (if the mechanics were better) is actually pretty solid. The best way to really enjoy this platformer is to understand what you're getting yourself into, which is an unintentional troll platformer.
