Super Kye

Super nostalgic! It's similar to the original Kye game that I used to love playing as a kid! So far the game has 18 levels, and an editor. If you are looking for more "Kye" action there's "Ultimate Kye", "Kye for 64", and "Xye" which you can find online. Big ups to the developer for creating this little nostalgic gem!

If you even found this game, then you almost certainly were a fan of the original Kye from 1992. And as such, I can definitely recommend this game to you, even though there is room for significant improvement. The game comes with 18 levels (21 if you count the bundled custom "levels"), which is not a bad deal for the price. Of that number, however, I'd say about 60% is actually interesting and fun to solve. The other levels are rather simplistic and feel rushed (this is especially true for the more "arcade" type of levels). What I am particularly not a fan of, however, is the fact that there are sections and even entire levels that are nearly copy-pasted from the original Kye's level set from 1992--and even from various level sets known as the "Registration levels" of that era. I don't know if the author of Super Kye had anything to do with those original levels from the early 90's, but if not, that's a problem. In general, being inspired by classic concepts and expanding on them is great, but re-using them directly is low effort at best in my opinion. Gameplay-wise, Super Kye is alright. The controls are janky, and it almost feels like Kye is taking slightly different times between each "step" it makes, but at least it wasn't annoying to the point of making me want to stop playing. I wasn't able to make it past level 15 on normal play--there is a puzzle in there on which I've spent at least half of the total time I spent playing this game, to no avail. While there may be some obscure trick that I'm missing, I do suspect now there was an oversight and that this level is currently unsolvable, especially considering how easy the rest of the game is in comparison. Thankfully, it was very easy to move the inacessible levels into the custom level folder and run them from there. Overall, Super Kye is a decent, if somewhat raw, interpretation of a 1990's classic. If you have any sort of good memories playing the original Kye, you're unlikely to be too disappointed here. As for me, I do hope to see more polished Kye games coming our way in the future.
