Reviews
First thing you should know, is this is a browser game. You press F11, for full-screen. Even with the in-game help, the larger puzzles are impossible because there are just too many combinations. Kakuro should offer different levels of difficulty. Even with the update, most grids have large open spaces. There are still multiple solutions to puzzles. Kakuro should only have one unique solution. There is no ability to save your puzzle and come back to it later. There's no option to Undo your last move. The puzzles do not use the available screen space. The update introduced a new problem where the restart takes a long time to work on larger puzzles, or locks the game up, where you cannot not exit.
If you're used to published Kakuro puzzles, you may not like this collection very much. I got this on a steam sale, since I like Kakuro puzzles, but as soon as I began I started to see something wrong. These puzzles allow for multiple possible solutions. In all of the published puzzles I've done, the portions that you can deduce down to exact answers provide you with the clues you need to pare down the rest of the puzzle. With this collection, even on the smallest puzzles, there are no definitive deductions. You can pare down each box to possible solutions, but eventually you just pick a number in one box and trace your way around in the hopes of not running into later errors. The boxes in larger puzzles are small, and you can't use the number keys to input solutions or possible solutions. You have to lean in and meticulously click tiny numbers, which may be difficult on a small screen. There is no option to zoom in.
Horrible game design
Super Kakuro, developed and published by Dr. Cyril Splutterworth, is a logic-focused puzzle game that brings the classic number puzzle Kakuro into a digital format. Often described as a hybrid between Sudoku and crossword puzzles, Kakuro challenges players to fill grids with numbers that satisfy specific sum conditions while avoiding repeated digits within each group. Super Kakuro presents this traditional puzzle concept in a clean and accessible PC experience, emphasizing careful reasoning and methodical problem-solving rather than fast reflexes or story-driven gameplay. The game is designed primarily for players who enjoy brain-training puzzles and number logic challenges. The core gameplay is based entirely on the Kakuro puzzle system. Each puzzle grid is composed of blank cells where players must place numbers from 1 to 9. Alongside these cells are clue tiles that indicate the sum that must be reached by the numbers in the connected row or column. The challenge comes from the fact that no number can be repeated within the same group of cells, which forces players to analyze possible combinations and determine the only correct arrangement that satisfies all the clues simultaneously. Unlike puzzles that allow guesswork, Kakuro requires logical deduction at every step, making it particularly satisfying when a complex grid finally falls into place. Super Kakuro includes a large collection of puzzles that gradually increase in complexity. Early puzzles use smaller grids and simpler combinations, allowing newcomers to understand the basic rules and develop the reasoning skills needed for more advanced challenges. As players progress, the puzzles become significantly larger and more intricate. These advanced boards require players to track multiple number combinations simultaneously while carefully managing overlapping clues. Larger puzzles can take a considerable amount of time to solve, providing a deep and engaging challenge for players who enjoy long sessions of focused problem solving. One of the standout features of the game is the inclusion of a random puzzle generator. This tool allows players to create entirely new Kakuro puzzles beyond the built-in selection. The generator ensures that once players complete the main collection of puzzles, they can continue to experience fresh challenges indefinitely. This feature greatly extends the game’s replay value and transforms it into something that can be revisited repeatedly as a daily mental exercise. The interface of Super Kakuro is designed with clarity and practicality in mind. The puzzle grid is presented in a simple format that clearly separates playable cells from the clue tiles that display the required sums. Players can easily move between cells and input numbers using straightforward controls. The layout avoids unnecessary visual distractions, allowing players to concentrate fully on the puzzle itself. This minimalist approach is particularly important for logic games, where readability and ease of interaction directly affect the player’s ability to focus. For players who are new to Kakuro or find themselves stuck on particularly difficult puzzles, the game includes assistance features such as hints and guidance tools. These optional aids can help players identify mistakes or reveal possible number placements without completely solving the puzzle for them. The hint system provides a helpful balance between accessibility and challenge, allowing beginners to learn the mechanics while still preserving the satisfaction of solving puzzles through logic. Visually, Super Kakuro adopts a very simple 2D presentation that prioritizes functionality over style. The game’s graphics consist mainly of the puzzle grid and clearly displayed numbers, with little emphasis on decorative elements or animations. While this presentation may appear basic compared to more elaborate puzzle games, it serves the game’s purpose well by ensuring that every number and clue is easy to read. In a logic puzzle where concentration is essential, this clarity is far more important than flashy visual effects. The sound design follows the same understated philosophy. Background music is calm and unobtrusive, providing a relaxed atmosphere that encourages thoughtful play. Sound effects accompany actions such as entering numbers or completing a puzzle, but they remain subtle enough not to interrupt the player’s concentration. This quiet audio design helps maintain the reflective mood that suits long puzzle-solving sessions. Despite its strengths, Super Kakuro does have certain limitations. Because the game focuses entirely on one specific type of puzzle, the overall gameplay experience can feel repetitive for players who are not already fans of Kakuro. Unlike broader puzzle collections that offer multiple puzzle types or gameplay variations, this game remains dedicated exclusively to the Kakuro format. For enthusiasts this focus is a strength, but for others it may limit the game’s appeal. Another drawback is the lack of additional features beyond the puzzle-solving experience itself. There are no story elements, themed worlds, or progression systems that significantly change the structure of the game as players advance. The experience remains consistent from beginning to end, relying solely on the increasing complexity of the puzzles to maintain interest. Even with these limitations, Super Kakuro succeeds in delivering a faithful digital version of the classic number puzzle. The large puzzle library, combined with the random puzzle generator and optional hint system, ensures that players who enjoy logic challenges will find plenty of content to explore. The clean interface and accessible controls make it easy to focus on solving puzzles without unnecessary complications. Overall, Super Kakuro is a solid puzzle title that caters specifically to fans of number-based logic games. Its emphasis on deduction, arithmetic reasoning, and careful analysis provides a rewarding experience for players who enjoy mentally demanding challenges. While its narrow focus and minimal presentation may not appeal to everyone, those who appreciate Kakuro puzzles will find it to be a reliable and engaging platform for testing their problem-solving skills. Rating: 7/10
Puzzles are unreasonably hard and I'd be shocked if they were guaranteed to be unique. Interface is junk. You click each number in each cell you want to mark, you can't select multiple cells and enter the same numbers in each. You can't even use your keyboard for anything. Board only calculates sum errors, not logical errors like multiple of the same digit. Limited number of hints allowed per level based on how large it is.
