This game should not be free....
I remember this game from many years ago, back when I was just discovering the rabbit hole of visual novels I remember quite liking the setting of lone spaceship with waifus in mechas, but I snoozed during some of the more political parts and planets histories. I also remember the very clunky and unresponsive combat UI. And also Sola being the best girl, no cap. Now I replayed it so I can tackle the Liberation Day and the rest of sequels with a complete perspective, and choices still fresh in my memory And hot damn IT IS A BANGER I should have paid proper attention the first time I played. The politics a dipomatics sections are not that complicated, even for my goldfish attention span. And they actually provide much of background and tone "Sit down boy, and let me show you *war*" The UI really is annoying. RenPy is not made for this "heavy" interface. During clicks often don't register, on random they completely miss the clicked button, and on two occasions the UI soft-locked me during the combat. The combat is not the exciting part of this game for me, unless played on easiest. Partly skill issue for sure, but I'd prefer to fight the mechanichs AND mechanoids, not the actual controls. On higher difficulties, I would probably hate the RNG, and balancing, and my skills. The rest of story and cast makes up for the combat shortcomings. And the music, especially in battles, slaps. Also Ava is best girl, no cap. See you in Liberation Day. This time on captain difficulty because I want to retain some dignity

This is a good game. It is also quite hard. The story is kinda boring, but the gameplay makes up for it by far. Here's what you need to know: 1. The games crashes rarely. You will absolutely encounter this a few times. Make sure to save your progress regularly, since the game doesn't autosave. 2. Start the game on ENSIGN. Captain is too hard for a first playthrough, unless you want to suffer. 3. There's a steam guide that tells you what to upgrade in the first 7 missions of the game. Follow this guide. 4. When you are past the 7th mission, you'll want to switch to the "Weapon Upgrade Guide". This helps you kit your heavy hitters. If you kill as many things as you can, you should get enough stuff to kit everyone out according to this guide, and you won't need to sell the special thing that costs 10k later on. 5. After Ongress, rest assured that the game is almost over. Feel free to spend lots of Command Points at that time. They don't carry over to the next game, so use them up - especially on that 2nd escort mission. 6. There's one scene where a character is on screen with her bare tits out. Don't play this game in public, at least until you're past that scene, okay?

An amazing turn-based tactics game that also just happens to have a great visual novel attached to it.
Personally, I find Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius to be a thrilling adventure fraught with drama, colorful characters, and intrigue. Is it a perfect system? Certainly not. Is the plot something revolutionary? Not really. But it is highly entertaining and engaging. I'm currently replaying the series so I play Captain's Return, but honestly, I've been wanting to replay it for a while anyway, and not for alternate endings or for the achievements--just because I enjoyed it and wanted to revisit it. And I personally think that says something. The only thing I wish more of the game is for the developers to put the OST out there on the internet somewhere. I'd love to be able to add some of its tracks to my Spotify album, they'd make excellent background music for when I run mecha TTRPGs.
Внебрачное дитя Evangelion и Mass Effect
First Arrival & Mask of Arcadius, First Arrival & Mask of Arcadius, до зазнавшегося идиота с комплексом героя в Liberation Day и наконец до сломленного войной ветерана в The Captain's Return.
Being a free game, it’s hard not to recommend it, especially if you enjoy visual novels or strategy games. The mix of strategy and decision-making keeps things interesting, though my main gripe is that the game crashed and soft-locked several times, possibly because the engine isn’t built for such heavy UI and battles. After scouring the internet and discussion forums, I managed to fix the issue almost entirely… roughly halfway through the game, lol. I don’t remember exactly how I solved it, unfortunately. Even if strategy isn’t your thing, you can adjust the difficulty to breeze past battles and still enjoy the story. Overall, it’s definitely worth playing.
Negative review for one primary reason: a strategy game with only one valid strategy is not a good game. Period. Spoilers below! Combat: -The only viable strategy is to turtle all your units together to maximize shield/flak bonuses. Leaving your bubble with your melee unit, for example, results in instant death for that unit. -The recommended default difficulty level is next to impossible, especially for a first time play through. You need to bump it down a level to be playable. -The upgrade system provides a nice math challenge to determine which upgrades are most effective. -The enemies have infinite missiles and you only have a few. Even if you had infinite missiles they are ineffective due to the amount of enemy capitol ships with flak coverage. -The combat UI gets really laggy with more than 15 units on the field. Visual Novel: -Actually pretty good. The story hooked me at the start and was pretty interesting. It starts exploring some darker themes halfway through the story. -The choices felt meaningful when making them but don't actually impact the story in any way. -Most of the girls have an attraction to the main character but nothing actually materializes, and your choices throughout the game don't seem to influence this. -The nudity tag seems to have been added due to one short shower scene which provided nothing to the story. I don't know why the devs included this one scene, it should've been removed so the nudity tag could be removed so the game could reach a wider audience. -The story ends on a cliffhanger, but due to how flawed the combat system is I can't recommend anyone spend money to buy the next game in the series.
