So difficult to give a Thumbs Up right now. I love Substance Painter. Incredibly useful and very intuitive once you got through the learning curve. I often recommended it to other 3d designers. I have used it for 3 years now. Loved the 50% disscount to update to the yearly edition. Now, its been gobbled up by Adobe. I fear for it and Substance Designer. I deeply dislike Adobe's subscription plans, expensive, pro-profit with very little if at all consideration and appreciation for the customer. And the programs themselves, you cant even buy them anymore, just pay a monthly subscription. You are "renting a service". Basically "pay expensive subscriptions, or scram", you do not ever own the program, you "pay to play" monthly.... not cool. The SP team painted it as great news... kind of remind me how some politicians paint terrible news as "its so good for everyone". Being Adobe, I really doubt it. I sincerely hope I am wrong.
Great software is an essential tool in my workflow and have been an avid user since its beta days. Sadly with the change into a subscription based model, it really isn't feasible for hobbyists.

I used this product since release, I also own Adobe products since CS3....the last version I own and use CS6, because we cant buy anything else....I wont sub, as it cost more ...in the LONG RUN....and you own NOTHING..you people who love subs great...but we want choices .....so if you like renting cars, homes, software good for you.,.you own nothing and clearly don't understand what an investment means in business.... We do....and want to OWN our cars, homes and software... So people we aren't saying get rid of subs, so people who have made negative comments to us.....get a clue.. we have yet to say no subs at all, we want a choice...and Adobe , Auto Desk , games have seen they LOSE MONEY, when they start this sub crap... because smart people want a choice and a investment...Subs only work, if you use once a blue moon......I use daily and would of paid x 10 for this stuff if I subbed to Modo, Substance, Photoshop, which I own free and clear and can still use..I own Maya 2016 own free and clear..if I would have subbed, I couldn't of done my job.......and been paying out of my butt for it...I own it and can make a living by using software I OWN, and always have access to.... So Adobe get a clue, you should of learned your lesson when you ruined your own Software, now you want to use your power house weight like politicians to control us.... and ruin another product..... I will be going else where as I did in the first place when I left Auto Desk and Adobe ........... Also your support for Unity sucks..... learn how to write a plug in..
I love use substance painter/designer, but sinse theres (probabily) not going have any 2020 version without pay the expensive/ridiculous adobe cloud i recomend start looking for another texture/material program.
Remember when Mudbox was the hope for a ZBrush alternate thats better and more sane ? And then Autodesk came along and ruined it ? Yes here we are again a software that is awesome actually and then gets bought out, to be ruined be a subscription model and half baked updates that dont matter, or warrant ANY of the soon to be terrible price once Adobe poops their crap onto Substance Painter. I feel violated i bought the 2019 update, hope the devs choke on my money for selling them self to the devil and forcing me to find an alternate once 2019 wont get updates anymore, Im done with Adobe and never ever will walk that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ road again.
They sold it to Adobe, and now it want permissions to access my contacts and calendar? (mac OS Mojave) So money they got from Adobe was not enough and they want to sell all us out also? I have no clue for which purpose program like this could ask for these permissions.
I fear I can't give this software a good review as they have been assimilated by Adobe. And unless ADOBE would do something similar to what Allegorithmic did, alias sell a perpetual license with 1-year update, I'm afraid I just can't justify giving this a good review. Do get them ASAP.
I wish I paid more attention to programs that let you work smarter. I'm a sole modeler/artist on a video game and I was dreading the whole unwrapping UV's and Texturing process. An industry friend recommended Substance Painter and what would have taken me months to do using Photoshop, I was able to cut my work time in more than half and I've barely scratched the surface of what SP can do. A great software asset to have in your arsenal!
Perpetual Indie license for Substance Painter Includes 12 months of updates for 149 from adobe. This one on steam is 98.99 with 12 months of updates. if you feel you need another 12 months after i think its 75 dollars.(i assume you'll be able to do it with steam once its linked) either way you get to keep it after time expires and maybe you just don't care for for new tools as you've gotten stuck in a routine. (saving the yearly cost)
Substance completely changed my texturing work flow. I'm able to quickly and easily get the results I need regardless of the shaders used. I can easily do texture work for the ancient Source Engine, or Unreal Engine 4. The ever expanding toolset has saved me tremendous amounts of time and energy and allows me to focus on the actual art rather than jumping through hoops to achieve certain effects or maintain symmetry. Protection tools make it incredibly easy to apply decals or repeating patterns, and the ability to easily export to photoshop means that this process is even more quick and painless, and allows easy transfer with full layer control for further revision. Solid piece of software
