IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STEAM DECK OWNERS
subROV has been certified for the Steam Deck, so it is fully playable and complies with several requirements set by Steam for the device. The frame rate while exploring the seafloor often dips and stays in the 20s, though, and cloud saves have not been implemented yet.
If you are thinking of buying subROV for the Deck exclusively, and generally can't stand low fps, we advise that you wishlist it for the time being.

As an ROV operator, I really appreciate this game. A part of my work includes benthic echosystem analysis which this game includes. Controls are customizable so changing buttons to match different ROV controller configurations is possible. ROV deployments are a bit long but it is possible to stop and explore pelagic species wandering around.
SubROV is an extremely well thought out early access title, and I'm glad I decided to give it a try. I'm pretty sure it came up in my recommended due to me playing Virtual Sailor NG, otherwise I don't think I would have found it. Given there is not much for content other than a few showcase videos on Youtube, I was basing my impressions off of steam reviews and the small amount of gameplay I watched. Early Access: You never really know what you're getting with a lot of EA titles nowadays. I've had good and bad experiences. I always try to be cautiously optimistic before I purchase and I'm happy to say that this has to be one of the more polished games I've come across. My 5 year old laptop has zero issues with performance using the ultra preset, and from what I can tell subROV is fairly light on resources although that may change as content is added. So far I have not come across any bugs or anything that would tell me this is even an early access title if I didn't know strictly based off of gameplay. Early impressions show dedicated development, and as other reviews have stated this is clearly a passion project, and it really shows. Gameplay: SubROV starts off with a brief tutorial that covers all of the basic functions of your ROV. It will teach you how to properly launch and dock from your surface ship, descend, and control all of the movements you will need to complete its dive scenarios. There is definitely a bit of a learning curve with the correct procedures, and adjusting to controlling an underwater vehicle takes patience and practice. You can use the surface supply ship to quickly move between dive areas. This is not a fast paced experience at all. I thoroughly enjoy slow paced, technical simulators so for me this is great. Everything is very quiet, slow and tranquil. Skimming the sea floor in near complete darkness with only a small radius of light around you is really cool. Everything feels good to operate and the physics are not bad either. The current can have a real impact on what you're doing, while using hover mode will help with the drift, it also slows down your movement speed. Right now there are 6 scenarios with various tasks within them. They take place in different regions around the world. This may not seem like a lot, but I've now spent 2.5 hours on my first one, and I'm not even close to finding everything. You will dive and traverse the ocean at various depths looking for various aquatic life and objects to scan and discover. You also have a robotic arm that can pick up and manipulate various objects. There does seem to be a bit of lacking content when it comes to what you actually find and discover on the sea floor. Even on my first scenario it already seems somewhat repetitive to discover and scan the same fish species, and pieces of trash over and over again. I mean, the experience is still there but it could definitely use a bit more detail. Graphics: For what this is, the graphics work and they work well. You will basically be seated behind a digital control panel for your ROV, which features numerous buttons, camera angles and map settings. This does add some nice immersion to operating underwater, as you actually feel like you are at the controls. The ambient lighting from the buttons is very nice and easy on the eyes. Buttons are satisfying to click and have a rigid industrial feel to them that I really like. As it is in the real world, the ocean gets darker the deeper you get, and you won't see much other than what is illuminated by your ROV lights. Get close to the sea floor and you will start kicking up sand which can make it hard to see ahead of you or what you're trying to scan. This is a nice touch that adds to the realism. Sounds: It sounds like underwater, what more can I ask for Improvements, Feedback, Final Thoughts: Overall I think this fully worth the time and money. Great job devs. I think it could use a bit more in terms of content, and this is not a bad thing. I'm hopeful. I want to see more because of the nature of this subject. An ROV is not something that typically comes to mind when you think about video games or simulation. But since searching this on Youtube, my algorithm has pointed me towards numerous technical animations featuring ROV work in the real world. It would be so cool to see more ocean engineering in this title such as building underwater infrastructure or repairing deep sea cables and pipelines. I feel like this would be a whole gameplay element on its own. It would also be great to have more ROV types to use. And maybe an upgrade system too. As of right now there is not really anything to do with all of the points you obtain from the scenarios. I'm very much looking forward to where this sim goes, and I really hope to see it continue to improve. It's already awesome and for that I give it a solid 9/10
Excellent simulation; very niche and combines well with a darkened room at night.
Wanted to love this game. I love the concept but alas once underwater you find you are on an alien world devoide of life except for maybe the ONE deep sea fish that you are supposed to scan, ONE sea fan or sponge etc... There is NOTHING on the bottom and NO schools of fish you would of course see... In deep water you dont even get to see a bottom dweller skittering along anywhere... Another big problem is that its SOLD as a game that has lots of life underwater. Just look at the SubROV title page!!! Life and color everywhere... BUT NOT SO!!!! I looked for a setting to maybe turn on sea life somewhere and found none so I REALLY wanted to love this game. The physics and mechanics are really good, but the visuals are remarkably dry and uninteresting. Under lights, the ocean floor is an explosion of color, In this game its a bare shade of blue.... That they got VERY wrong. The game needs to be updated to include enugh life so you feel you are on EARTH instead of on some lifeless exoplanet somewhere...
I really liked how this game introduces you to the ocean and the submarine world, in a realistic yet enjoyable (playable) way. The controls are complete but not overwhelmingly complicated, and you can speed up time in the deployment/recovery procedure (although you them might miss the whales!). The details on the atmosphere and on the landscape are great, as well as the feeling of the water when you go down. The game is very stable and does not feel like an early release (both in terms of buggyness, and on the available missions), and I have found no glitches (to date). So, if you like nature, exploring, submarines or simulators (or all of the above) you might want to give this game a try! That the developer seems to be very active in the community hub and constructively responding to feedback is a plus. I hope they release more missions soon!!
I adore this game! ( I just wish I could play it more!) I have a love for marine life, and especially conservation. This game has everything that I need, a scientific approach to exploring the ocean, and it's a fun game. What more could you need! The developer is extremely friendly, and has an open approach to questions and conversation about how in depth this game is. Especially over on Discord ( https://discord.gg/9u6sWmzn4G ) PLAY IT, SEE THE FISHES!
If you're passionate about marine science, exploration, or even simulators in general, this is a must play. It's one of those games where you find yourself saying, "I can't believe I haven't played this sooner!" Everything about it is so satisfying: the procedure, the atmosphere, the detail... if you've ever seen footage from an ROV and wished you could be the one piloting it, this is your chance! If you're a fan of videos/streams from SOI, Nautilus, WHOI, NOAA, MBARI, etc, you have to try this! The anticipation of slowly making your way down the water column until silhouettes of the the seafloor emerge never gets old. The rush you feel spotting a creature and scanning it is addicting- you feel like you're the very first to find them! You'll be thinking, "just one more and then I'll get back to the objective..." And speaking of the objectives, it's so rewarding navigating your way through the depths and completing tasks while making new discoveries along the way. You feel like you're actually contributing to science. I know this may all sound very niche, and it is, but honestly, if you're someone who's played Subnautica and enjoyed the thrill of packing your Cyclops up for a long adventure, you may get a lot out of this even if you're not a total science nerd like me. It scratches an itch for exploration and procedure in a way that seriously rewards you if you're imaginative and willing to learn some controls. Plus, it's very clear a lot of passion has gone into this game and the community also reflects that. I'm so excited to see what the dev adds in the future and I'm happy to support this game.
a wonderful find! i love exploring the maps and the mission objectives are quite fun (some more challenging than others). there may not be a lot of sea life variety (yet!) but the graphics of those included so far are great. i was quite surprised at what else can be found on the sea floor, i look forward to seeing more getting added. oh, and i WILL find that Giant Squid one day!
This game is clearly a passion project. The general UI polish is very impressive given the scale of the project. Everything feels really slick. It's relaxing to dive down and meander along the sea bed scanning stuff. Deck controls and performance are quite good, and that's how I've mostly played so far. I hope to see more seafloor variety (to whatever extent is realistic) and fauna added in the future, but it already seems quite well fleshed out to me. Keep up the good work! Side note: While controller support is totally functional, I would love to see snapping in the future so that you don't need to precisely use the joystick to hover over UI elements in the ROV control panel. That by itself would dramatically increase the comfort of that input method.
