The interface makes the text-based Sublunar more confusing than it needed to be, but once you know your way around it's a pretty average 'risk management' game. In order to complete the level, you have to dominate the region with your faction by completing quests, and as you progress the game will introduce more randomized elements. The tutorial is not very helpful which is part of the problem, I would recommend highlighting the buttons for the player because they are hard to find on your own. Generally speaking, to play the game you have to go to any city, select a quest, and then you have to make sure that your crew meets the stat requirements, including potentially mandatory gear and weapons. Some of the missions have an element of "luck" because you can't see the secondary phase, but you can eliminate it by asking people in towns for information, assuming the city is under your alignment. When you start a mission you will have a choice of a faction, it's not purely cosmetic, it affects the frequency of certain events and items in the store. Sublunar has a couple of issues with the design of the interface when it comes to 'active quests'. I often find myself buying the crew for the wrong mission because all of them are in the green column, so I would change the color for the active quest. Additionally, it can be difficult to figure out where the quest destination is because of the reversed logic - to help your faction, the quest has to be given from another faction (which makes no sense to me). Also, it took me about 15 minutes to figure out why I could not drag my crew into the mission slots, apparently, it just has a short delay, so all you have to do is hold the mouse longer before it can move.
Pros:
+ decent 'risk management' gameplay + very moody & atmospheric + mission flexibility with unique faction benefits
Feedback:
Interface - please change the cube color for the active quest from green to something else, I keep buying the crew for the wrong mission because it's just one green column. Whenever you have an active quest selected, I think it should just highlight the cities where it can be completed. It's confusing that the benefiting faction is the one on the receiving end of the quest, perhaps you should just say that this quest helps* this faction in some form other than "from and to". For the tutorial, you should highlight the buttons that players need to find, they are very small and it's very hard to do on your own. Additionally, the delay when you drag the crew around from the inventory to the mission made it somewhat confusing (I assumed I was doing something wrong). Dead Quests? - so I am not sure if I am missing something, but it seems like you can accept a quest even if the faction is no longer present on the map, making it impossible to actually find a city with the quest? You can abort the quests, but still, you should not be giving me missions if I can't complete them. Technical issues - I had a few crashes to desktop with no crash report. Additionally, the game occasionally softlocks and you can't press anything. Overall Thoughts: 6/10 It's not a bad game if you are willing to learn the mechanics, but there are a lot of similar games that have so much more to offer beyond faction loyalty (Space Rangers and Hyperspace Delivery Service come to mind). I mean it's a text-based game so you have to manage your expectations, if you just want to crunch some stats, it can be fun for a few hours. One big thing, please make sure the 'active quests' are more intuitive in terms of visuals.
Review By: http://store.steampowered.com/curator/31294838-Hidden-Gem-Discovery/
Game is not ready for release; it should be beta/early access. It is buggy (multiple patch releases per day several days in a row?) Instructions are not very thorough. Layout and navigation is clunky, and would benefit from keyboard input. I played one game, started to get the hang of things, and ran out of money, could not acquire any more missions (not enough funds). Game did not TELL me it was over and I couldn't advance, but that seemed to be the case. So I started a new game, and was immediately blocked by "not enough funds" again because my wallet still had only $29. Started several new games, same problem. The most fun I had was requesting a refund for the game. Needs work.
YOU WILL BE THE GUY , IN FUTURES , IN SPACE I MEAN SUBLUNAR. AWESOME.
