Strangers of the Power is a very short (about 90 minutes, including the bonus floor from the DLC) JRPG that consists of a single town with a dungeon beneath it. It's not terrible, but the entire game here would just be a single quest in most full-length games, leaving it rather pointless. The only thing that really gives it any length is that you can play through three (or four, with the DLC) times, once with each duo of girls. The custom art for the girls and some of the monsters is probably the strong point, but otherwise it's pretty much a generic dungeon crawl in a single dungeon, with characters who tend to act very, very silly. A notable funny point is the "difficulty ratings" the dev gives - Seraphine, the "beginner" character, probably has the most trouble later on due to being incapable of doing damage effectively, while the "advanced" Maiya is easily the most powerful character and has no problems blowing through the game. (The "average" Gracie and "very advanced" Chandra are about in the middle.) All in all, it's not really worse than mediocre as gameplay-oriented RPGMaker games go, but it's way too short and pointless to be something I'd recommend. If you do own it, I'd recommend not making like me and playing through all four times, either, and just playing as Gracie, or Chandra if you have the DLC.
This is a very average RPG Maker game that is rather short. Basically it consist of killing a bunch of monsters and 3 bosses in a 5 level dungeon (Castle). To get all the achievements, you have to play the game 3 times with your main character as a Warrior, Mage and Rogue. However all 3 times are extremely similar because you are given a 2 member team (main character and secondary character), which basically consist of a TANK and a CASTER for all 3 playthrough. There is really not enough differences. This game is kind of at the borderline between recommend and not recommend. It's a hard decision for me. However, since steam only allow 2 choices, I would go with recommend due to its low price. It's just a relaxing way to spend a boring evening with $1.
Genre
Ein JRPG Dungeon Crawler
Story
+ Günstig + Story OK + Musik ganz gut + Animationen ganz gut + Die 4 Charaktere spielen sich recht Unterschiedlich + Voice Acting + Achievements + XBox 360 Controller Support
Fazit
Attention: - this review may contain spoilers, if you don´t mind go ahead and read at your own risk. Summary: A JRPG game made with RPG Maker. Features cute artwork, female protagonist, achievements. About the game: - Strangers of the Power is a game made with RPG Maker, developed by Tuomo Laine and published by Tuomo's games. The story is short, but the game is long (training character, farming items, etc). The base game has 3 difficulty mode available: beginner, average, advanced, with 3 different class (warrior, mage, rogue) respectively. Each mode/ class the MC will have a partner to help the battles; each mode/ class has a different story, however, the gameplay and how the NPC´s will react is the same. Female protagonist in all difficulty mode. - Story: in short, a pair of witches are terrorizing a city with their magic, then you, a traveler is here by chance and can't leave the city (city locked by witches magic) will go to the dungeon and kill the witches. - Artwork: cute, no gallery available, only few CG´s in game. - Soundtrack: pleasant, not bad - Gameplay: bad, same mechanics for all difficulty mode (same ambush points, same enemy). You can´t escape from the battles. Learning a skill/ spell book will close the menu, if you want to learn another skill/ spell needs access the menu again. The battle formation is different, only 2 characters are available per route (MC and her partner), always is a 2 vs 1, 2 vs 2 or 2 vs 3 battles. - VA: partial voice acting present - Achievements: available. Will needs to buy the game DLC to get all achievements. - This is not an H-game About the DLC: - the DLC content will add a new difficulty mode (very advanced) with two new characters, some extra dungeons, enemies and one boss. You can choose talk or avoid the nun in the dungeon, this will affect the ending (bring back or not MC´s sister respectively). Conclusion: this is a JRPG with a short story and modest gameplay. Recommended to buy during sales or if you like challeges, JRPG´s.
(Gotten a key to this courtesy of the developer's submission to a group I no longer write for!)
It blows my eye holes and fills me with REAL POWER!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq3BgFF6p6k (If the video gets removed: Real Power from Adventure Time) Before I begin this review, I must first issue an apology to a friend and developer. For a long time I had this game (maybe about a year) and for that period, I put it on the back burner among my backlog. He has been very passionate about his project and I have done him a disservice by issuing him a promise and reneging on that for so long. So, it's time I fulfill my promise and give the feedback that has been asked for so long. I'm sorry for this inconvenience, Tuomo. From the creator of Lamia Must Die and Save Your Mother comes an RPG Maker game that can be best summarized as a casual RPG (in the developer's own words). Upon hearing that for the first time, I felt frightened and overwhelmed by RPG anxiety (with the commitment and time that you have to put in to play an RPG) and this was especially so with the math puzzle, which I really felt a terrible experience with. The final straw at the time was running into errors that prevented me from continuing and made me question if I wanted to. After that moment of weakness, I would put down the game for an unknown period of time before eventually picking it up again only to learn that the experience per playthrough is short...namely 1-2 hours long each and that the difficulty is actually pretty low. I'm glad that I decided to give this game another chance. Strangers of the Power is a short RPG that lets you control one of 3 duos (1 more with DLC) that range from beginner, to intermediate, to advanced in difficulty, though when you become more familiar with the tricks per duo, you'll find that this range is actually the reversed from what the developer claims. Fights are often simple and I have rarely found myself getting a game over (only on few occasions) and equipment was fair to come across. There was also this nice feature of "Quantum Leap" that let you stop where you were in the dungeon to revisit the town to restock and recover...after which, you could resume exactly where you left off in the dungeon, greatly reducing the difficulty of the game. One thing to comment is that the stores felt ill balanced, but not as much as Metal as Ph*k, where stores felt ludicrously unnecessary with high prices you could never reach and with items you would find for free in the field. The armor and weapon stores were accessibly with the Quantum Leap, but with weapons and armor I could find in the dungeon, I did not feel compelled to make purchases often, especially since some characters required gold that I couldn't find by the time the game was ready to end, leading me to just jump to the end. At one point, you get an accessory shop, but I have never found myself buying one thing from it because I already felt adequately stocked for the final boss. I imagine that there were various "first times" for the developer in making this project and they show in the programming for the shops or the usage of the "level up genie" who grants you either: Gold, Higher HP, Higher MP, or a free trip back to town...which you'll almost always choose higher health. Of course, the inns are also free, which meant that the difficulty was already quite low along with the large array of save crystals, which meant that if you were a busy person, you could save if called away. Another I have is that there is a time where you get a boat, but you have to access it through your inventory. In some RPGs (I think Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, these were accessible with a click of a button once you reached water. I would have liked to see that implemented rather than looking for it repeatedly in the menu). When you get to upgrade your boat, you'll think that you have a lot more to access, but sadly, you only have access to 3 minor areas when you get the feeling that your adventure has greatly expanded...namely meaning that it feels like Strangers of the Power may have been a demo in testing several features with RPG Maker, which isn't entirely a bad thing considering that this is a casual RPG. And to refer to Jargonaut's review, duos will basically be "The warrior" and "The mage", with little difference between the duos and that differences in terms of dialogue and endings are basically one-liners with the main changes only being in the introductions and the resting period on the 3rd floor of the dungeon. But I know I've been spouting off negatives, so what's good about Strangers of the Power? Well, as I said before, it's a casual RPG that takes about 1-2 hours to complete a run with a few duos (interactions slightly differ, but are mostly negligible in terms of interaction) and that it doesn't really focus on major story elements and instead focuses on casual gameplay. If you feel like the story may be watered down and lacking, that's the trade off. Characters are cute girls and battles feel less generic that what you may expect while not deviating too much from a system you're familiar with...which is where Tuomo's works seem to shine: Through experimentation and focus on being unique rather than sticking with a template. So...the ultimate question: Do I recommend Strangers of the Power? I'd say to go for it. It's a $2 game with 3 duos, giving you about 6 hours of gameplay in its base form if you play through all 3 routes. If you feel this is too much, I would recommend getting it on sale for about $1. You may feel this game is lacking or in poor design, but I see it as a testing ground that has given the developer a playground to work with. This seems to be the case given that Tuomo has two sequels in this series, meaning that it's been a learning process in the mechanics of the software chosen and through the experience of what works or what is weak, showing his ability to recognize strengths and faults and to improve on them for future works. If you're a casual gamer or are looking for some quick achievements, this is the game for you. If you don't like RPGs or suffer RPG anxiety often, then you might want to think on this for a week or a month before purchasing... in case you choose to do so. While this game is easy, I found myself mildly entertained. 6/10 While it's testing various waters, Strangers of the Power still comes off as a casual (and easy) RPG that's fair for children and adults alike.
*edit after another 3.5 hours of game play* Well...advance mode is HARD, but in a lame way. Thief could be a weak mage or a weak warrior. Neither DPS or hp is good enough. She got two special skills. Flare causes blind, but monsters still hit me every turn. Steal has extremely low success rate. It might be easier just kill the monsters. So yeah, thief is useless. that's why she is "advance mode." In the end, had some fun time, but I don't think I enjoy all the way. Storyline differs so little I almost believe both mage and thief are extra add-ons. Gameplay is too "OK" so it's hard to recommend it. All I could say is...it is only 2$. *original review* This game is SHORT, like only 2 hours include grinding, for the warrior(blonde hair girl). All the characters you pick are fundamentally the same: a tank pairs a mage. The warrior has most hp. The mage has lots of spells. The thief has steal, which is likely to let you spend less time on looting (could be useful for mimics but I haven't try yet). Story is a little different, but It didn't change gameplay majorly. So it quickly bored me out in the second playthrough. In short, this game is just...."OK". Since it's cheap, I think I let it pass and grab all achievement someday. But I think I'll rather suggest buying Helen's Mysterious Castle.
Full disclosure: I did receive this game for free. Youtube First Impressions video: https://youtu.be/jqKAk_dT89o How's it going everyone, in this RPG Maker MV First Impressions video we take a look at a game called Strangers of the Power by Tuomo's Games. The first thing I noticed and liked was the multiple different character busts, even the inn keeper had a custom art bust. There are three play modes, Beginner, average, and advanced mode. Each mode puts the player in the role of a different class and/or character. I chose the 'average' difficulty path of Mage. The other two are Warrior and Rogue. The dialog isn't bad and the menu is refreshingly different. The iconset seems to be a modified version of the Yanfly freebie iconset. (Which is much much better than the terrible default MV iconset.) There are many skills (in the first hour that I played) and most of them have great looking (if very familiar) animations. Not much in the area of action sequencing, I was kind of disappointed. My opinion on the mapping is mixed, because I like some of them, but obviously not all of them. I found some region restriction errors, or what appeared to be a RR oversight. The many various items and weapons available to the player all had appropriate pricing, and the combat numbers (although very easy)((as it should be in the first hour))) appear to be balanced. I felt like there are a few missed opportunities when it comes to rewarding exploration and the lack of interaction events. The pub, while I do appreciate the BGM change, felt like it was too dead bland and dark. (If that was intended then no big deal.) If that town is not supposed to be bleak, then spruce up that pub. :) There is some decent voice acting in this game, it's not overly done and super annoying like other games have done in the past. Is this game worth $1.99? Well I've only played 45 minutes. You be the judge of that based on what you think of the beginning of the game.
I played this game all the way through 3 times. It is a good game for the money. Not hard but not easy. The story is basic and the objective straight forward. A basic RPG for sure. The story is linear and does not offer much in the way of branching. The English is bad at first but gets better later. For the cheap it is an okay game. I like the playthrough the first time but it is a one-trick-pony. The only thing that changed when picking the other characters was some minor skills, the number of spells, and the difficulty in defeating enemies. (lower stats or higher enemy health?) The graphics are nice but transitions are choppy at times. It could be better but then again it could be worse. Again for the money it is fine. I hope to see better in the future. I was told that this was a fund raiser for others games in the future.
