RANKING:

[strike]AVOID | FLAWED[/strike] | MAYBE | [strike]WORTHWHILE | COMPELLING | UNMISSABLE [/strike]

SYNOPSIS:

[th]ASSESSMENT:[/th]

Starwulf - Seeker of Secret Space delivers a mix of Tetris with Space Invaders style gameplay that can be straightforward and relaxing, though pretty bland and grindy. Not only is the campaign too linear, but it is very repetitive relying on the replaying of virtually the same content over and over. With only the most basic of dynamic elements providing minimal variety, its quite possible to lose any desire to keep playing. While ship upgrades and consumables provide some interesting tactical choices, acquiring new ship hulls only expands some capabilities that are needed for progression. However, production quality is at a fair level. Overall, the game doesn't match the addictiveness of Space Invaders, nor Tetris and while not terrible it doesn't offer enough except to MAYBE consider getting.

STATUS: Fully released and mature with no issues, but needs more features and could do with some minor touches of QoL

APPEAL: May only appeal to fans of the simplest games that combine Tetris with Space Invaders, in what is essentially a mobile port

VALUE: Full price is low and adequate for such a basic title

Key provided by the developer through curator INDIE GEMS | Click to follow and receive updates for reviews of a similar nature
More info below.... https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3147731234
OBSERVATIONS:
► A simple PREMISE that combines Tetris and Space Invaders style gameplay with an additional third-person action mode to collect items. Completing the game requires discovering enough clues to reveal the endgame secret/level. ► Tetris style PUZZLE-SOLVING takes up the bulk of gameplay. Shooting the right shaped titles into planet sized walls of tiles and/or single/multiple piece asteroids. While somewhat fun its appeal to keep playing depends on the difficulty and the speed of play. The lower difficulty and the lower the galaxy, the slower it will be. ► The CAMPAIGN consists of just x9 replayable galaxies bearing y-z number of planets. Each can be repeatedly played to gain the necessary credits for progression. Though each one needs to be unlocked sequentially, just how exactly isn't completely clear. ► LEVELS come as a mix of planet shaped Tetris battles of various configurations. Some have asteroid section incorporated. The composition of these change with progression, but lack any true variety. Additional elements such as enemy fighters spoiling to damage the player's ship could have added more depth to gameplay. Some levels seem made to purposely use consumables to overcome perfectly. ► UPGRADES can be made to the hull and ship components. A total of x3 ships plus numerous useful components such as weapons, shields, cargo bays and other utilities can be purchased with rewards gained from completing each level. Most of these are useful in tight spots, others appear to be needed due to some purposeful design decisions. ► The GUI retains the mobile gaming look it was built upon with the narrow screen of a phone. CONTROLS in the Tetris levels have a delay mechanism to enforce some difficulty when selecting the same piece. A similar delay affects the 3rd person mode where a magnet upgrade is required to claim some of the secret cargo as it whizzes past. ► There are no ENEMIES to battle, while destroying tiles get closer to the player's ship. Something which is disappointing. ► AUDIOVISUALS are very basic. The single tune soundtrack is catchy, but the sound- effects sound rather flat. ► Given it is very much a MOBILE PORT there are no microtransactions included in the Steam version. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3147733437
COMPLEXITY:
🔶 ACCESSIBILITY - There are a very few Tutorials for those who have never played a tile-based Tetris game. The only things that are slightly unclear is how new galaxies are unlocked and how the secret clues work towards finding the endgame secret. 🔶 DIFFICULTY - This depends on the game type and difficulty chosen. Harder difficulties seems rigged to require consumables that 'were probably' microtransactions in the mobile game version. Delayed weapon use and speed/frequency of tile movement rises with difficulty too. 🔶 BALANCE - Only the deliberately slowed pace of choosing the same title sequentially, unbalances the game. Though overall the playing field is quite level and as long as there are some consumables to use on levels that need them. 🔶 PACING - The space invaders elements forces the Tetris part of the game to become noticeably slower than the regular version. 🔶 SCALING - Apart from galaxies which generate harder Tetris puzzles, it does not scale much. Ship upgrades can be brought quite early and only the need for consumables really have any impact towards gameplay.
STAYING POWER:
🟨 REPLAY VALUE - Without any true dynamic elements gameplay is very repetitive. Mostly due to levels being very similar in nature and a lack of additional elements (such as enemy fighters) to overcome. 🟨 LONGEVITY - Likely has no real staying power once completed. Unless replaying on harder difficulties floats your boat.
PRODUCTION:
🟣 QUALITY - Apart from some QoL that could better explain galaxy unlocks and secret hull progression, none were encountered. Likely due to be a mature title due to its mobile gaming roots. 🟣 STABILITY - No issues experienced. 🟣 STEAM - Cloud saving. Screenshot capture. No controller support. No achievements. 🟣 OPTIMISATION - Extremely high FPS due to the game's low spec requirements. *informational review Casual puzzle + unique - missing element = Mobile port Tetris shooter. Match shapes with asteroids to blast them. Stack bricks to fill the shape once you reach a planet. Collect coins for upgrades.
Follow our curator for similar games
I tried this game when it was released last summer. It was too slow and repeated itself. But this latest release makes game so much better that I stuck playing it. It seems that there are special stages and some kind of missions. Hopefully there are lots of them. The new auto-shoot equipment makes shooting asteroids much easier and the pace of game is faster. I need to play more!
5.5/10 A casual game where you shoot Tetris shapes and also collect coins in a 3D racing tunnel Good: - it can be played with the mouse only or with keyboard only - music is nice - there is a metagame with ship upgrades that gives a sense of progress So-so: - simple stock audio - the gameplay seems varied at first. There are basically 3 game modes that go in a cycle here: 1) pick a Tetris shape, rotate it to the correct orientation and shoot it upwards to match the shape on an incoming asteroid, 2) fill up a small irregularly shaped area with Tetris pieces, 3) fly in a 3D tunnel that has obstacle and collectibles. However, each of these minigames is pretty simple and gets boring soon. - in the 2 Tetris minigames, the challenge is simply the controls that are overwhelming. Unlike in usual Tetris where you'd have just 2 actions (move left/right and rotate), here you have 4 actions (move the ship, pick a shape, rotate a shape, shoot a shape), each with its own controls. While the idea is novel (and this justifies the existence of this game and why you may want to check it out), for a semi-casual/arcade style game it's simply too much. I guess the design challenge would be to reduce the actions back to 2 or at least 3. E.g. shots could be done automatically once the ship is facing the asteroid exactly to fit the shape on it and the shape is in the correct rotation. Also, instead of picking shapes manually, there could be an "easy" mode where the correct shape is selected for the closest asteroid, and then the only 2 things the player must do is to move the ship and rotate the shape. Or it could build up gradually: like, in the first missions you only need to move the ship (and the shapes, rotations and shots are all done automatically), then in the next realm you need to do 2 things (move ship and rotate shapes), then in the next realm 3 things, and until finally, deep into the game you do all 4. - in the flying game, it's hard to see the actual XY positions of the objects. Maybe it could work better if there were some kind of a grid on the tunnel sides, with shades or projections of objects visible there (?) I actually can't recall any game using 3D racing in such perspective. Typically racing games, even with 3D view, still only allow movement along the X axis only Bad: - the game crops the playable area to a vertical rectangle, with the sides just black, probably because it was primarily designed for mobile phones - gfx are pretty basic, like it's a non-commercial project Overall, it seem like someone's first game, so kudos for publishing. The dev also improved a few aspects as noted in their comments. Upvote since there is no neutral vote. Actually, I could think of still better mouse controls for the tetris minigames even if all 4 actions are there: - mouse movement moves the ship (its position should match the X coordinate of the mouse) - left-click anywhere selects the next shape in the cycle - mouse wheel rotates the shape - right-click shoots (thought this only seems to be needed in the minigame with big areas to fill, and for small asteroids the shots could be automatic) Selecting shapes still feels unnecessary tbh, maybe just the game gives you a fixed shape, and you can click to shoot it just into empty space, to get the next shape selected. Then, if you have many different asteroids flying, you'd have to quickly search if any of them have the currently selected shape. In any case, everything that reduces the number of possible actions at any given time makes the game more manageable. You shoot the shapes that are shaped like tetris bits. priced like a mobile game and feels like it. if you dont mind that check it out .
A fun and unusual mix of shooting and "Tetris" style puzzle action set in a rogulelite outer space, select your ship, starting planet and destroy the blocks with your puzzle pieces, clear the planets perfectly for a bonus. Collect minerals and earn gold to upgrade your ship with abilities like freeze time and missiles. After each planet cleared you have to dodgy spikey bombs in a hyperspace to the finish, collect all the secret canisters to either use them as freeze time or sell them for gold. There are also black hole stages where you dodge asteroids and collect minerals, the stages get faster and faster and you have limited shields. There are also planet puzzle sections where perfect solving earns you a big bonus. Your ship upgrades and gold are kept for each play through so font worry if you die or get blown up I should say, you can start again and work your through the many galaxies and planets available. Graphics are simple and colourful and suit the game style, a "Retro" look would be appropriate. Sound and music are also good. For the bargain price of only £2.49 I highly recommend this to any puzzle fans out there!
