Pilot your spaceship and destroy others. StarSmashers is a turn-based game but it still puts pressure on you to make choices fast with a timer that can expire before you make a move. https://youtu.be/isK4oz55eYw
Really looks, feels and plays like a mobile game. Everything you think this game is from the screen shots and description... is wrong. "High octane space combat – epic battles that demand tactical decision making and quick reflexes…" Sure, if you think choosing to attak or repair against a timer, while waiting for other timers (your weapons, etc) is "High octane..." "Ship upgrades and augments – loot new technologies and upgrade the Space Beagle. Pick the right weapons for maximum damage, and the right shields to keep the enemy at bay…" Can;t speak to "loot" as I didn't encounter any, but upgrades, sure you can make your existing weapons and stats 'slightly' higher when you have enough cash and experience... "Epic encounters – huge variety of alien races and ships, all inspired by classic 1970s Chris Fosse artwork…" Epic...EPIC, Hahahahaahahaha... Each turn you move one space along a linear track to the next encounter. There you will fight, one enemy. Then you may upgrade (assuming enough money/xp). Rinse and repeat. "Five star systems to explore – discover vibrant gas nebulae, mysterious alien planets and derelict space stations…" Can't comment. But since everything is linear, I doubt there's much 'discovery'. Effectively the game is this. You move along a single path, because there is only one path. Fight an enemy at each stop, which involves clicking on various buttons while a timer counts down (about 10 seconds), then is the enemies turn. Eventualy one of you dies, and if it's the enemy, you might have the chance to 'upgrade' one of you weapons/stats. The weapons are basically rock-paper-scissors, some do better damage to some parts of an enemy and weaker at others. Everything is on a timer. Weapons cool down, repairs take reactor energy which take time to build up after use, missles take time to replace, auxiliaries can only be used once per turn. It's just dull... The only cool part is the 70's sci-fi aesthetic, pity it wasn't used on a better game...
Too hard and frustrating as is. But I do like the "rock, paper, scissors" space fights. Kinda like "Infinite Space" for the Nintendo DS. Now that game was beatable. LOL
I gave this game all the chances I could, and I don't even remember why I bought it, but it's way overpriced for quality. I wouldn't mind if it were linear, I wasn't even entirely against the timing aspect of the abilities and weapons. I can see how to win and not have much trouble. But it doesn't save choices except at the end of fights, and never saves settings. This means I have to fix the volume EVERY TIME I open it, and if I change my weapon loadout, I need to change it EVERY TIME I go into a battle if I don't win with that loadout. I'm all for supporting the little guy, but they need to pay attention to details.
Just not fun, and for a lot of reasons. For starters, it is a space game, you control a single ship, and you home system is attacked, you seem to be on a mission of vengeance, though everyone seems to be attacking you so maybe you are just defending yourself, hard to tell. The game play however has no real feel to it, no sense that you are 'in space'. You and your single foe take turns shooting at each other, targeting one of five systems. Damage is split over the shields, the targeted system, and the hull. Once you get the hull to zero, you win. I defeated the first three pretty easy, mostly targeting the weapons, though even when they are 'down' they seem to be able to shoot back. Go figger.... There is no maneuvering, just a yawn of a slugfest. Between missions you can spend money on upgrades, and occasionally you level and get to spend skill points. They don't really seem to mean much though, and things are hard to understand. There is certainly no sense that I can see my ship and understand what it can do. To make matters worse, I think there is a bug, as my first gun simply stopped working, even though it showed ready to fire. The bottom line however is there is no sense of engagement, and no sense that I am in space. It is simply a click fest, broken up with waiting for things to charge up. Three thumbs down.
