Starship Rubicon is a modern take on the classic space shooter genre. It's a smart and challenging rogue-lite that features a unique control scheme, pixel art remixed with NASA photographs, and an existential crisis about who is REALLY the monster.

More thorough reviews already exist. I'll just laud a couple of things:

the clever writing (scientifically literate item texts, cohorts capable of changing a run's tenor, and a just payoff
not in spite, but in light of railroading
).
the aversion of power creep (few strict upgrades, elegant ship designs receive stat boosts and cheaper maintenance).
Oh, and there's a couple of pseudo-features (
deleting the only layout of a ship in the hangar produces unintended UI behavior and re-locks the ship; reloading a mid-campaign save adds to the bank each time
) that I don't mind at all, really.
This game is absolutely amazing. I won this at a retro gaming convention at Portland and loved it then, and went home and played it and still love it now. Unfortunately when I got it at home there were some problems with missing enemies. But that has all been fixed, please buy this game and support Wick for he is a great game developer!
Story Humanity has been destroyed by Aliens You are unfrozen by an crazy revengeseeking AI ,which then forces you to fly your Fighter through several Star Systems to destroy the Enemy Homeworld. Star Systems (levels) consist of several diverging strings of Battles which are randomized, and you choose which way/string you will take to the Goal (the System Warp gate) . The Main Game Battles are a Topdown 2d Shooter, where you control the thrust ,rotation of the craft, afterburners, and all the Abilities&Weapons you build into your Fighter. Similar to the classic Asteroids Game ,but with far far more Content . Between Battles your Fighter can be upgraded with found or bought Components. This adds a slight strategy element to choosing your path through the Levels as you can see Shops and Parts on the Map and have to decide your route accordingly. You have a regenerating Shield which can take more or less hits (depending on the Way you build your Ship), which is needed ,as your Ship dies very quickly without Shields. As firing your Main Cannon lowers your Shields for a Second to let the Shots pass there is a bit of tactics and timing involved too. Enemies Diversity is good. For Example Stuff like Mines and Drone Interceptors,Laser Barriers,Missile Frigates, huge space Coral Reef ,Warships, and so on. also Endbosses. There are also Ai Sidekicks for yourself. Battle Sectors have Space anomalies like Gravity Fields /Spore Clouds/Asteroid Storms. Graphics are functional (see screenshots),but are fluid,no Eye Candy here.Sounds are ok. Bugfree,no motion blur, no mini transactions,no telephoning home , no ads, or other annoying & "influencing" Crap. Although here is a bit of Screen Shaking. Its abit on the short Side (4-5 Hours) if you pick that *one* Shiptype, stick to a certain cheesy Tactic/weapon and are halfway capable at Action Games. If you take the other Ships it´s a *lot* more challenging, i guess about 6-8 hours or infinite if you dont have the Reflexes & Tactics for the more agilitybased Fighters. This is a wellcrafted IndieGame worth my money and Time and i personally enjoyed it.
before i even started playing, flashing buttons giving me a siezure. x-box controller doesn't work with the game. only one button works.
Got this game in a bundle. Didn't seem like anything special, but it turn out to be a cross between Omega Race, Asteroids and FTL. Which is old school awesome. Well I guess FTL isn't old but whatever.
very fun game. graphics are basic but its got it where it counts, playability. only thing I'd improve is more enemy variety. it has a lot but more couldnt hurt.
I dont usually review games but this one is incredible!
I love this game. It's a combo of Star Fox level selecting (minus the secret paths), Asteroids, and Roguelikes. My only complaint with the game is I cannot play it w/o a virtual machine (bc I have Windows 10 baby). Edit: I ended up fixing the game by running it in Windows 7 compatibility mode.
a me piace molto gioco spaziale old style ma profondo e divertente uno dei migliori giochi di sempre!!!
Interessante Elemente. Benötigt größere Grafiken! --------------- Nice elemnts, but needs bigger fonts and grafix. And a better Tutorial. But now it is too confusing to get in and play fast (for me)
